I had suggested just that a couple of years ago,age requirements
for membership.I was knocked to the curb by every teen onboard.
If someone feels the subject matter is too intense for young minds.
Be the parent and watch what you're kids' are doing online.

Many may have focused their attention on the second paragraph
when responding to the op.People call each other names all the time
some are more serious than others.I have also been called a retard,
nutjob to name a few.You have to learn to let these names roll off
your back or someone will really cut you deeper later, now that they
know what will push your buttons!

You can swear. Light swearing is allowed. You can say the words damn, hell and piss.

Sure! Add profanity to ATS. Morals and standards are being degraded everywhere else, so why not send this site down the toilet, too?

If you cannot express yourself without using profanity, you have issues and probably a low IQ.
I'll use profanity when in the company of friends in a relaxed atmosphere, but when I'm online, I like to hold myself to a higher standard. But, people choose to sink to new levels all the time, so I suppose this thread has been in the making for some time now.

Personally I can't stand speech snobs! I see plenty of them on this thread! I mean come on, they are only WORDS! How does it effect you?

I even see people here saying, I swear with friends but if you swear online you have a low IQ, sorry but this reasoning is RETARDED! Well in fact there is no reasoning just hypocrisy! I'd like to give em a BIG F U!

I'm for freedom of Fing speech personally...

You're absolutely correct.
Everyone has the freedom to sound as stupid as they want. If you feel the need to use the word retarded over ridiculous or assinine, that's also your prerogative.

Me? I prefer to remain a vocabulary snob unless I'm with close friends. Having a large lexicon and expressing myself in the most intelligent way possible is important to me. Why it's not for others is beyond me, so I'll just chalk it up to too much MTV, Jerry Springer, and other low end PROGRAMMING.

ATS is a cut above other similar sires in the knowledge quotient of the members. To allow profanity would do nothing but attract those people who do nothing but cuss on other sites. If one can't carry on a discussion without spewing a stream of potty mouth, then they don't belong here.

I like the civility, even when it's heated, when people use real language that can be used around anyone.

Ya..what he said!...

I don't mind a bit of sarcasm or correction...but I do mind swearing.. I am glad ATS does not allow it.

As for the (personal attack) issue...I do think that some people do go too far on here and I wish they would stop.

It is a sign of an inabilitity to think and speak without some thought going into it. And it is entirely un-necessary in and on an intellegent forum.

Go elsewhere if it suits you...it does not suit ATS and stimullate smart and intellegent discussion.

That would give the poster away...and I'd assume that they are small minded.

And yes...maybe Im wrong...try it in school, church or the store....

Its almost hilarious that a no swearing policy is enforce on any site i visit, since television has more death, sex, drugs, swearing and everything under the sun than any other public/private form of human interaction.

Oh the stupidity of the human race far exceeds the planet they inhabit in reference to time.

There is no such thing as a bad word. Words don't hate, we give them hate when we use them a certain way. It's like calling someone a butt VS calling them an a**, there is no difference. Either way you mean they are full of s**t. By those standards this whole site is built on 'profanity'.
While I agree the immature name calling and insults need to stop, nearly all of us are guilty...even if only in a small way. It's worse than swearing actually. People call swearing ''adult language'' petty insults get called ''childish'' or ''immature''

When you pay the bills, you can make the rules. If you don't like the rules, and you don't pay the bills, your only option is to go away. ATS is not a democracy. You don't get a vote nor do you have "rights" here.

Cuss-Words. Curse-Words. Explicit Language. Obscenities. Dirty words. Profanity. Bad-Words. Vulgarity. 4-Letter Words. etc.. etc..

What do each of these↑ all have in common? They're just words. That is all.

A word will never hurt you, unless you allow it to.

The entire idea behind certain specific words being taboo, is total nonsense. Anything, and I repeat ANYTHING, that I can tell you by using those taboo words, I can also tell you without using any of them.

Here's another way to look at it too:

It's ok for me to say, [color=7FFF6B]"I am going to rape you."
But I cannot say, [color=FFADAD]"I'd really like to *%@* you."

(you know, a similar act, but the consensual version)
So I guess it's only ok to say it, if you do not give me your consent.

[color=FFBE73]Sticks & stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but birds will never word me.

How quaint.

And quite possibly original!

Do people actually read a post or just the title?

Op specifically said this,

I do not actually think profanity should be allowed here on ATS.

I don't think any poster on the first page actually got what he was saying, and it was pretty clear.

Wrong. That wasn't in his original post.He edited it because he thought people weren't getting what he meant.

Many times I've wanted to use less than polite or socially acceptable language on here but the general rule we all tend to follow is that if you can't make your point without resorting to insults then you have already lost. I'm no angel and haven't managed to stick to that rule all the time, but it's a fair enough statement in my opinion.

I'm all for freedom of speech, regardless if I agree with what is said. If people want to make controversial statements about anything I don't mind it. I really never could grasp how a word could be 'bad' it's just adjectives to me. If there's bad words are there bad numbers? (Lol someone will probably say 666) I do understand the weak being bothered by words. It's like they say the truth hurts, but it's your own option to let it hurt you.

As far as I'm concerned, this↑ is the entire issue. It has been embedded into our brains through repetition, that this small group of specific words should not be used, because they are 'bad words'.

Why are these few words 'bad'? I can say the exact same thing by utilizing various other words.

I doubt that you even thought about it, because it is something that just comes out naturally. You automatically assume that if one of those few words is used, it will be some sort of an insult. There are many better ways to insult someone without using profanity. Sure, sometimes they're used insultingly, but not always.

Just words.

Not at all. I speak in real life like a trooper and every second word of mine is an expletive, I do however realise that ATS doesn't tolerate this and in return as being a member here, I try my best not to use that kind of language.
