Due to a misunderstanding of the point I am trying to convey, I do not actually think profanity should be allowed here on ATS. I am stating that it might as well be in comparison in regards to the rise in personal attacks by some people that do not agree or share your view,

The use of profanity on ATS might as well be allowed. I see ATS getting progressively worse. I see a rise in attacks where what is being said is worse than profanity. There is a growing amount of keyboard warriors and trolls putting out more trash talk instead of actual legit replies to posts.

Earlier, I was referred to as being retarded. To me, that was more offensive than any combo of profanity. My sister died when I was 12 from complications due to mental retardation and it is a word that I despise. And for you trolls waiting to pounce on that, it is not hereditary and does not run in my family. If this was a open event hosted in a public forum, would you call me that in person? I have a sneaking suspicion that the answer would be no.

The constant attacks here are attributed to the DUNNING - KRUGER EFFECT Its no longer acceptable to have your theory or opinion along with the chance that the other person just might be right. It is not acceptable to believe Nibiru or Planet-x just might be real or that Dr.Greer just might have talked to people that know the truth or gave up his medical profession in persuit of what he feels is the truth. Instead of bashing insulting peoples views, ideas, thoughts or opinions, go beat your wife or kids or neighbor, tough guy.

Not one letter of this is typed with a violin playing or a tear, it just sucks to see something good being systematically taken apart thread by thread. My advice, get a job, a girlfriend, then again, Trolls dont work well with others.....

So if you had a child that visited this site you would want them to see and read profanity?

If you cant take what's being said then maybe this site is not up your alley.

I don't want profanity on this board and I know that I'm not alone.
I get called names all the time, you just have to grow a thicker skin.

People use profanity when they can't think of anything else to say!

Long live freedom of expression, liberty!!! Some don't like freewill, some claim that it doesn't exist, SOME fight tooth and nail to suppress it. Well, that's just sad... pathetic even.

You don't like that I use curse words? Well I think your words are a curse! I'm not going to try and stop you from saying what you say, so do the same on to me!

You indoctrinated, subservient fools! lol

Use language to seduce, charm, tickle and excite others...

My skin is thick, I have trouble comprehending the mindset of the know-it-alls. There is no need for insult, if you dont agree or believe, move on. And I dont think swearing should be allowed, it might as well be with the ignorant ass behavior.

If profanity were allowed on this site I would select
to no longer be a member, as simple as that.

ATS is a cut above other similar sires in the knowledge quotient of the members. To allow profanity would do nothing but attract those people who do nothing but cuss on other sites. If one can't carry on a discussion without spewing a stream of potty mouth, then they don't belong here.

I like the civility, even when it's heated, when people use real language that can be used around anyone.

I agree with what you said, cussing is only indicative of ignorance. And here at ATS we deny ignorance, in all its forms. If you cannot use proper english to convey your point perhaps your point is not worthy of being conveyed at all!

My issue with profanity is that it usually does not clearly express a single idea and can be construed in many ways. In fact, you can usually remove profanity from most statements and they still say the same thing, indicating that the profanities are entirely superfluous.

I am deeply sorry that someone here referred to you as retarded. It is obvious from your posts that you are most definitely not retarded and to state such can only be taken as a sarcastic attempt at character assassination (it also may indicate deficiency in your attackers capability to cogently address issues you have raised).

I'm not really for or against profanity on this board,it makes no difference to me.But this is a weak argument against it.Kids see much worse out there on the internet then a few curse words.

True...but, they don't see it on ATS. That's a good thing in my book....why add to the problem.

It Summer time...

That sounds like a word only a child would use on this site.

Sorry you were hurt. I understand why. Words matter.

I did see this trend last year...This trend will pass.

Oh I agree it is a good thing. It's certainly part of what sets ATS apart from other sites.

The point I am trying to convey is that some of the empty attacks are about the equivalent of profanity.. I am not actually promoting the use of profanity !!!!

I know what you are saying...ignorance is sometimes the sharpest sword. I can tell your feelings were hurt very bad. Just remember, the unkind behavior and words thrown at you, reflect only on the thrower. It does nothing to change how others see you, only them.

here is the other side of the coin swearing can be use to emphasize a strong feeling or point you wish to get across that mere cordial polite speech cannot relay for example

These F@#$ing gas prices are driving me crazy......................

or you can be subtle using existing symbols to stress your point all within T&C guidelines

Oh $h!T

either way cursing is part of everyday modern speech. and to deny this truth is to embrace ignorance of the day and age we live in perhaps you would prefer we return to old english with the thee and though's

when used in the proper context swearing does have it's place and we all do it

Very good OP on this and gratz for saying it. I actually read your whole msg by the way.
I know this has nothing to actually do with profanity.

I'm sorry to see this problem didn't get stomped while I was taking my break..it was building badly then too. I wish they'd just add to the T&C to cover it specifically. Something like 'any message or communication that is specific and can be identified with another individual member that is negative or attacking them'.

It isn't a question of 'you can leave if you don't like it'. That is precisely the PROBLEM. Some of the best thread creators didn't complain, didn't rant and didn't post msgs about it. They just did leave. I hope any real thinking in that direction is minimal. Saying others should leave if they don't like things turning hostile or personal is ignoring how it should never be turning that way in the first place. There is a worlds difference between addressing someone's opinion and someone themselves.
It's a timely rant, indeed.

Meh. Having an opinion on the words people choose to use requires caring what their moral standard is, on a word level. I've got bigger issues with their standard of living (when it is my business), than to care if they use taboo words...considering my Lord called a woman a dog to her face.
