I absolutely dont get this kind of thinking that it has to have a practical application to be important.

The quest to uncover the fabric of reality is not enough? It is the basic trait of human nature to be curious. Ever since first human wondered what is behind that hill and went to look, humanity has been on this path.

For me, LHC would be worth it even if it cost ten times as much as it did.

Ah yes, because religion has produced so much more valuables things then science. Why do we even bother with schools of thought when we can just learn churchy stuff?

So even Peter Higgs can't think of anything useful to do with this?!

Says it all really.

And the fact that finding the particle will justify the vast money and time spent on the research at CERN is not really a postive, in my humble opinion.

Define 'useful'? Can it be weaponized and kill small brown children somewhere? Can it be turned into a video game? Can it be synthesized into a drug and sold by the CIA?

Or can it help give us a better understanding of the basic building blocks of the universe we live in? How boring, i know.

I'm going out on a limb here...but I'm sure it's going to be used to make more efficient and deadly weapons.

That's what my husband said, I asked him what he thought of the Higgs Boson, he looked at me like I was an alien, then I explained it to him and he said, they will just "F" something up with it.

I was really looking forward to the results, but found them disappointing.

Just like how when the electron was discovered there was no obvious use for it. But hey, that was a waste of money, wasn't it now?

Well they may have found out what causes the egg yolk to be seperated from the egg whites. So they could one day quit injecting vaccines into eggs to use the mysterious properties they don't under stand. Separating the egg yolk from the egg whites. Billions of dollars and they have finnally seen it. They think?

The Goddamn particle, as it was originally referred to.

What use does it have? Apart from being the building block of matter, it now allows Particle Physics to put the final (for now) brick into the Standard Model wall and give more direction to future research. But indeed it is a major boost to all related theories, Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics and String theory etc. I cannot wait to see what advanced will happen here from now on. And where that will lead in all the fields of quantum applications ....

I just hope we do not have another "neutrinos faster than light" glitch here and discover there is a setback.

Religion controls, science is about to move in for the kill, "it's like this" follow us" we have proof" the numbers"

there is much more to reality than matter. Our reality is linked to us. Each one personally. Before we go messing with reality we should spend more time finding out how we effect it.

Schools of thought? yeah one day.

Yet again you're bashing something you don't understand. That is the height of ignorance. Only in your last thread you professed to knowing nothing about particle physics or what they're doing up and CERN, only to claim that "the numbers were wrong" and that you'd like to invent a particle accelerator that "doesn't use numbers", ebcause "numbers are Catholic" and "wrong", amongst other misguided and ignorant statements. Forgive me for not taking your baseless assertions and "insights" seriously.

In that case, give or take

Doesn't deserved to be passed of as "not important" though aye?

The difference is, ANYONE can see the usefullness of electricity or computers. I'm not a technophobe - far from it - but this research is one of the least useful I know of.

Although I understand all the positive in modern technology and advances in science,

I wonder if the negative doesn't weigh heavier in some ways.

It's a forum mate, il just shut up and read yeh? Just for you. disscusions help in understanding. I'm not bashing nothing that's the way you are taking it. Calm down. Do you want me, against my will, to conform to your way of thinking? To science way of thinking? Or am I allowed to speak my own mind? Geeeez

Discussions help in who's understanding? You seem to have your mind all made up when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
