try graphene skin, that would be cool. augments aint actually that far off, i posted some links earlier in the thread, but you could also try looking up exo-skeletons and other tech, such as contact lenses with intergrated Heads Up Display, battery and gps.

there is some kick-ass tech that they are working on right now that is gunna change everything within our lifetime

I'd be all for a set of cybernetic eyes. I have horrid eye-sight, never have seen like a "normal" person.. No Peripheral vision, 20/200 or worse in both eyes. yea.. just gimme 20/20 with peripheral vision, maybe some HUD info, etc, and I'd be happy.

Now brain Augs would be nifty, a universal translator for reading / speaking / listening..
A learning Aug, for near instant learning and application.

A metabolism mod, and a health mod, to regulate internal systems (like to fix being a diabetic), prevent or repair heart-attack and strokes as they happen, metabolize food and prevent the body from storing mass amounts of fat.

Things like that, I would go for.. I don't need physical augs tho.. I like my arms and legs, fingers and toes just the way they are..

Hmm, could think of another aug, my wife would love it, but I'd never get anything else done.. anywho.. /grin

en.wikipedia.org...

The Global Frequency is an independent, covert intelligence organization headed by a former intelligence agent who uses the alias of Miranda Zero. There are reportedly 1,001 people on the Global Frequency, forming an active smart mob communicating by specially modified video mobile phones through a central dispatch system coordinated by a young woman code-named Aleph.

The purpose of the organization is to protect and rescue the world from the consequences of the various secret projects that the governments of the world have established, which are unknown to the public at large. The people on the Global Frequency are chosen and called on for their specialized skills in a variety of areas, from military personnel, intelligence agents, police detectives to scientific researchers, academics, athletes, former criminals and assassins. These threats that the organization deals with are equally varied and usually world-threatening, ranging from rogue military operations and paranormal phenomena to terrorist attacks and religious cults.

The existence of the organization is an open secret, but its membership list is anonymous, the identities of its field agents unknown to even each other before they meet on a mission. Often the only way to tell a member of the Global Frequency is by the phones that they carry or the Global Frequency symbol—a circle with four points on its perimeter 90 degrees apart—that they sport somewhere on their person.

Who exactly funds the Global Frequency is not known. Zero has said that at least some of the money comes from the G8 governments who pay the Frequency for not revealing the various secret horrors they deal with. Although the presence of an independent, unaccountable agency with strike capability makes some authorities nervous, they also recognize the fact that the Frequency has the skills, the reach and, more importantly, the will to act where they cannot. As a result, the organization gets tacit approval for its activities, and is sometimes called on by governments to deal with extraordinary crises. Mostly, however, the organization acts proactively as it discovers such threats.

well well i had no idea there was a MOVIE!!

I'm with you on all that stuff, dude. As you see, aside from the people like me who would stock up on augs for the sheer badassness of it, and (since I often work in the military and security industries) enhanced self-defense abilities that come from it - there is also so much more we can do with it - so many people we can help with augmentations to let them surpass the unfair limitations Nature has set on them via their bodies - things like bad vision, amputated limbs, spinal damage that immobilizes limbs, etc. etc.

People think of augs as mechanical limbs and the like, badass stuff like a machinegun for an arm - it's useful in certain lines of work. But augs are so much more than that. Universal translator for example. Internet in your brain.Replacing failing organs with biomechanical copies. Just imagine how easy it would be to completely destroy the epedemic of overweight simply by providing an augmentation that destroyed fat?

There are more reasons that I say human+/augmentations is the next step in Evolution, than just my wanting a Gatlin gun on my left arm.

"Necessity is the mother of all invention" -unknown (Even tho attributed to Plato).

New eyes, and a new organ or two, and I'd be as happy as anyone who didn't have to worry about bills ever again.. haha

Just the aug chip and system to maintain ones health, monitor, and adjust the body would be priceless.. You would never have to worry about Cholesterol, gall-stones, failing kidneys.. Would put most Doctors out of business tho, except for when things get beyond the system, or Emergencies, like getting hit by a car.

Now the brain-enhancing augs would be massively useful. Learning-disabled or handi-capped would be massively beneficial. Would also accelerate that which we currently do, in all aspects.. Just in the private sector and every-day, the benefits would be massive.

It's just the ethics board(s) I worry about. /sigh

Yeah, damn ethics. Their proponents are always sitting on their high horses claiming moral high-ground. Blegh. I'll say this, though. In my opinion, augmentation technology is not inherently evil. It has possible flaws and risks, sure, but it is not evil, and as such, it should never ever be illegalized - especially not considering all the help we've established that it could give to people with handicaps and the like.

And because I too want to get them I also don't think it should be regulated or limited only to those who really need them.

I am connected to a buch of idots whom do nothing but attempt to cause problems!! I guess all of us are just an experiment to make us get along..but me on the other hand..I am just telling everyone..I want a damn divorce from all of them!! The Aliens communicate with a knowing..the humans talk 24 hours a day..the only break I get is sleeping..try doing homework..oh my!! I went from a 3.81 GPA to drop out.. All I can manage to do everyday..is just work and sleep..This whatever is going on is being called Telepathic Link by me..and some others are calling it The Hive!! This Link has been active since Sept-2006.

IMO no one can stop the technology progress, robotic prostheses are already a reality. Its just a matter of time when prostheses outperform the original biologic parts. There are still some key problems that need to be dealt with, mainly wear and immune response issues.

Another interesting thought is that I see future human "augmentation" not only in terms of robotic implants but also biological improvement on the DNA level. With a DNA tweak you could change your muscle fiber anatomy to make your muscles 10x stronger. Even for handicapped people maybe they will have the option of getting a synthetic implant or a cloned body part. This is hard to predict, I guess it just depends of which way science decides to advance first.

One thing is for sure, the future will be very interesting

It it could very well be that our next stage of Human Evolution is Genetic Self Improvement. Now the U.S. Military is by FAR the number one developer as well as researcher of Human-Machine interface as well as the Military using Genetic Engineering to develop Body Tissues that do not reject Neural Inputs as this is the key to direct access to the Human Brains various areas that control Memory, Sensory Input as well as the ability to Network Groups of Soldiers.

They are so far in advancement in these fields that Congressional Committee Oversight of Black Programs...which is a very small select group and does not make any aspect of these Black Programs information available to the rest of the Congress...and this is also the same as far as even a sitting U.S. President being on a NEED TO KNOW BASIS.

Because of my Third JOB...I have a Glimpse into several aspects of some of the incredible work that is being done. Anything I have said here has already been of Conjecture in the Media and I am not saying anything that has not been talked about before....yet it boggles my mind when some people think that the U.S. Military which is charged with protecting the Worlds Largest Economy as well as the fact that what the world sees today being used as U.S. Military Weaponry was designed 30 to 50 years ago. The B-52 is an example of a Bomber that was designed as far back as 1949 yet is still one of the most potent lethal Military Weapons as well as the OLDEST STILL IN SERVICE AIRCRAFT IN HISTORY. Still...this 63 year old design is FEARED by all Nations and is schedualed to remain in service until the year 2032.

Now think about that and then think about what is being worked on NOW! Split Infinity

i think augments would be on the same moral levels as plastic surgery when it started out. at first it would be restricted to people that needed it for medical reasons ie plastic surgery for burn victims, augments for amputees. but eventually, just like plastic surgery, doctors would see the potential to make big money by selling augments to people that want them for cosmetic (and badassness) reasons.

and the medical aug is already being developed

Intersting subject, and definitely prone to debate.
Now, I must disagree with you when you say we have reached the end of our evolution.
Firstly, as mentioned earlier, a drastic change in our environment will bring change if we can't rely on technology anymore.
Secondly, one just has to think, and not very long, about humanity to see that if it is evolution we are talking about, than we are embryos. Oh yes, we may have advanced drastically in terms of technology and gain significant knowledge of the hidden processes of our surroundings. But as a species, we suck, and badly so.
And to illustrate this I would mention the pollution of almost every corner of the globe, the increasing rarity of the ressources, the ever growing population and a system that thrives on the majority living at poverty level.

Then, I agree about having missing limbs replaced by prosthetics, this is a wonderful thing. But I am very wary of the enhanced humans and the race to perfection. And at an individual level, this does nothing to fix our way of thinking, and bringing more power to a species that is already ripping each other apart is like giving a chainsaw to a psycopath.

Without going into metaphysics, why would you chop your arm off for a bionic limb ? To put it another way, what use do you have for a bionic arm ? Throw a ball further, lift more weight, looking cool/badass ? I guess this would prove more than enough for the corporations to have milions of clients, but for me, my arm suits me just fine, and if I want to lift more weight, I will train myself and find through hours and hours of exercise if I really wanted it or if it was worth the effort. Once again, replacing experience and understanding with money to satisfy a momentary craving and then having the whole world stroking your ego telling you it is right, but you should definitely get the newer version...

And finally, check out their website, they have been hacked it seems, by a group called "Purity First" which has been linked in one previous post. The video they have inserted depicts a not so improbable futur...

You make a persuasive argument.
I posted the Purity First video also to get a balanced view. And let me be frank; I fully expect that both of those videos will become reality. It will help some, and it will condemn some to poverty and drug abuse (anti-rejection drugs). Unfortunately so. But in the end, as it will be when it comes to me, it is their responsibility whether or not they augment themselves.

I said before that I would jump at the chance right away if I got the chance to replace my left arm with a weaponized augmentation - but that's not entirely true. I never jump right into something without knowing I have a way to sustain myself and my needs from it financially first. That should also be the case for anybody who gets augmentations - otherwise they would end up like those people in the Purity First video. Doctors who replaced limbs with augmentations should also be bound by law to inform them of this, of their addiction for the rest of their lives to anti-rejection meds.

Bluntly speaking, if you can't afford the augmentations without a down-payment (i.e., pay it all up front) or expect that you won't be able to pay a spiked price for anti-rejection medicine as demand increases, then you really should not get augmentations, because you'll end up in the street, a painful wreck craving anti-rejection meds while your body painfully rejects your metallic limbs, leaving you to bleed out and die in an extremely painful way...

In the end, though, it's the responsibility of the augmentee, not the augmenter.

Also, for the record and for those who have asked, both of the videos in the original post came from background stuff for a computer game called Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The first one is, obviously, an ad for Sarif Industries, an augmentation company. The second is from an extremist group of anti-augmentation activitsts, called Purity First. But, do note, that I firmly believe that both of these videos, again, will turn into reality in ten or fifteen years, for better or for worse.

I hear you, dude, and I definitely agree. When I disregard what I can actually SEE, and starts thinking about what the government is working on in secret, and what scientists are working on, I realize that, a Deus Ex type of reality isn't far away at all.

And I definitely think that the next step in human evolution will be self-induced. Whether it's genetic betterment, or in the form of biomechanical or nano augmentations, I firmly believe that it is in OUR hands, rather than Nature's. Nature takes millions of years to evolve a species. We can do it in decades ourselves. Awesome thought, isn't it?

You know, I think that's spot-on, dude, comparing it to plastic surgery. But I don't think people are going to allow the augmentation companies to limit it to just people who need it. I think the demand, with our love for high-tech stuff and sci fi equipment, is too great. Those in need might be treated first, but I don't think they'll be able to hold back augmentations from other humans - nor do I think they want to, but that's another issue.

And you are damn right when it comes down to it, the augmentee is responsible for whatever he does with it.

The thing is, if something like this does come up, it will be the newest fashion and the latest trendy thing to have, I haven't got a single dobt about this, and money will come into play.
When opposing groups will protest, they will be retorted "we provide the technology, people have a choice to use it or not, and what use they make of it is not our reponsability" all the while brainwashing the population with the idea that not being augmnted is next to being lame.
This is why I mentioned the state of mind of our species nowadays, which is dangerous enough as it is not to add to it.

Sad, but true.
