This brings back memories when I was at Paris Island and we went to the gas chamber for a taste of CS gas.

They came out and gave us gas masks as they prepared a small quanset hut with a sand floor for us. They were burning what appeared to be sticks or something in the room.

I turned to my drill instructor, Sargent Stroud, and said the straps on the gas mask were frayed and would not work. He took my hand and pushed it up against the side of the mask and told me to get me ass in there. From the first step through the door my eyes started to water and it only got worse. as they made us stand there while one by one we took off our mask and said out name and serial number. And you it was much worse when I took off my mask and spoke. There was one guy who broke for the door and ran out. They then made him go in and rake the gas laden sand with a rake to make it look nice.

Their beards ARE the filtration system, works just as well as a gas mask.

AR 670-1 deals with soldier appearance and cannot be changed on the fly. Read up on it.
