Buddhism: Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful. (Udana-Varga 5,1)

Christianity: All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye so to them; for this is the law of the prophets. (Matthew 7:1)

Confucianism: Do not do to others what you would not like yourself. Then there will be no resentment against you, either in the family or in the state. (Analects 12:2)

Hinduism: This is the sum of duty; do naught onto others what you would not have them do unto you. (Mahabharata 5:1517)

Islam: No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself. (Sunnah)

Judaism: What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow man. This is the entire law; all the rest is commentary. (Talmud, Shabbat 3id)

Taoism: Regard your neighbor's gain as your gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss. (Tai Shang Kan Yin P'ien)

Zoroastrianism: That nature alone is good which refrains from doing another whatsoever is not good for itself. (Dadis-ten-I-dinik, 94:5)

These are just the major ones. There are many more religions/philosophies that also have some version of the golden rule. It amazes me that this concept is so universal. I think this shows that we are closer to each other than we are further away. Whats even more amazing to me is that most of us live by a lesser version of this rule everyday. "leave me alone and I'll leave you alone". This varies in degree from one person to the next but basically the same. How many times have we heard a mother or father tell their children "well if you don't like it when someone does it to you then don't do it to them!" again this is the golden rule. In a time when the simple fact that we are all members of the human species isn't enough to bring us together. Maybe by finding more ways of pointing out our commonalities we can bring humanity a little closer to taking that next step.Together. Imagine if the world lived by this rule as it was intended. With love and honesty. What do you guys think?

I don't have enough gold to rule anything and that affords me a moment to stop and think before I do unto others.

Peace

So simple that no one can accept it. Its not complex enough to be a real answer. Sad that everything has become so convoluted in complexity. Things are changing. Its only a matter of time.

Know thyself.
When you know yourself you will realize that all is you. The golden rule is a rule and will not be adhered to until one realizes that all is one and that one is the source of you (root) and the source of all.

First, one must be nice to themselves. A lot of people are not even nice to themselves. They call themselves names and are very critical of themselves, so people are treating 'others' as they treat themselves.

It is not enough to know the rule and expect compliance.

It must be written on your heart, it must sound as a gong in your mind, it must be brought forth from within you.

Then, the rule is not words, but your daily action.

Only when you can accept yourself will you beable to accept 'others'.

I agree with you wagain. You make a lot of great points in your post but in my opinion you and some others seem a bit bogged down in self awareness. Self awareness is paramount to even having the capability to actually live the golden rule but I also believe that it is just as important to apply it even if I haven't reached perfection. Its in the application of a principle that I learn most. Believe me when I say that I am not trying to argue or insult you. Like I said before I have a great respect for what you believe and the abundant wisdom in your words. These are just my observations. Sending out a good vibe to ya!

I believe the feeling, or notion, of empathy is from where it arises. Empathy, like the concept of "freedom", takes much time and effort to make it a habit of one's thinking and acting(or not acting). I believe that the effort involved in making empathy central to one's morality and ethics is why people neither follow "the golden rule", nor think about it very deeply.

You forgot one:
Wicca:
As you harm none, do as thou wish. And we follow this rule to the letter at all times.

The way you treat yourself will be the way you treat 'others' (good or bad). It is not a rule but a universal truth. Until one has unconditional love for oneself, love will be just a word.

It has nothing to do with how 'others' treat you or have done to you. It is all about the relationship you have with yourself. You hate yourself, you will hate the world.

Just playing on words with a do unto others at the end to clarify.

Peace
