Senator Asks DOJ to Investigate SWAT-ting Attacks on Conservative Bloggers

abcnews.go.com

A number of conservative bloggers allege they have been targeted through the use of harassment tactics such as SWAT-ting (fooling 911 operators into sending emergency teams to their homes), in retaliation for posts they have written, and now Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., has stepped into the matter. He has sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder urging him to investigate the SWAT-ting cases to see if federal laws have been violated.

So SWATing for those who don't know is a prank by hacking the intended target and simulating a 9-11 emergency call then ends up with a police visit and a swat visit.

Fully armed and ready to deal "with the so called " threat that was reported.

Filing a false report to the police is criminal if i am not mistaken, and yet this is happening..

They will continue to do this right up until someone getting killed,, and then those people who instigated that will sit back and laugh.

Having a Senator step in should not even have to happen, and getting Holder to "investigate" is a joke.

So your in your home sitting on ATS or doing whatever it is most people do, and bam a swat team busts your door down with weapons drawn at you and scaring your wife and children.

You know those people whose job is to serve and protect and there they are instead of taking care of the business they are suppose to be doing.

This crap has got to stop and over political ideology?

That is rather sad.

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. It does sound like an annoying prank and should be illegal / wastes city resources. Luckily nothing worse is being done to those conservative bloggers, though, at least as far as I know.

SWATing should carry a minimum penalty of 20 years in the pen. And if it results in the death of an innocent, they should cremate the mofo who called 911. Alive.

Man people are friggin nuts. What are they going to think of next?

:shk:

How many cases of this have there been? And why is it such a major issue when it comes to conservative bloggers, and not such a problem when it happens day-in and day-out across the country?

They are making a political issue out of something minor that should be dealt with through investigation by the people who would normally investigate.

This is nothing special or different, it's just being made into a political issue in an attempt to make those "poor conservative bloggers" into victims.

If this is the worst these politicians have to deal with, I would be questioning their relevance in office. He shouldn't have time for little media projects like this, yet he seems to be able to make an issue out of this while he could be using that time to help the many thousands who presumably elected him.

This is a non-story, created by a man who would love to make some big political stink and make his precious bloggers into victims. If people fall for it, they're idiots.

The FBI has investigated a number of SWAT-ting incidents in the past. In 2009, Carlton Nalley was sentenced to nine years in federal prison after pleading guilty to offenses related to a SWAT-ting conspiracy in Fort Worth, Texas.

Swating has been around for years and all it is going to take is someone getting killed from it to ever do what should be done about it.

It is not only a "political issue"

If they were not doing anything wrong then the bloggers have nothing to worry about. Keep SWATTING em.

to see if federal laws have been violated.

What about all the federal laws the Obama administration and the previous administration and current congressmen are violating?

Filing a false report to the police is criminal if i am not mistaken, and yet this is happening..

So is falsely accusing stealing American tax dollars for their own good.

When looking at where SWATing in the extreme can end up, check out Gito Bay. The ability to conduct an investigation in a war zone is extremely limitied, yet on hersay many just got rounded up on a few acquasations and just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In trying to save face, just keep in the hole and keep the cameras out.

In todays world there is very much a need for SWAT capabilitys, but like any unregulated power can cause a lot of damage unrestrained and in irrisponsible hands. With the issues of false reporting being around for a while, civil cases for damages, (broken doors, stress and all round time wasting) should have a very strong case. The main issue for the court would be motivation of the caller as sometimes legitimatly honest mistakes are made. But in the event of purposeful harrasment, take the bastards house.

Its well about time!
That old saying...there is safety in numbers ought to wake some up
from a dead slumber. Who would be next?

Hang together, or hand seperately!

Are you SERIOUS or just a typical leftard that supports this sort of tactic, or the lefts DEATH THREATS on Twitter after Walker won the recall???

Between Swat-ting and DEATH THREATS, how much of this sort of BS do conservatives have to deal with?

I've always thought SWAT-ting was humorous, especially when its politicians on the receiving end, regardless of their political party. Its even funnier when SWAT members get SWAT-ted.

This is why one of my threads was so important. Anonymous Posting. How free can speech be if those who disagree can send stormtroopers to your home when they don't like your opinion.

Right, because clearly the left have a monopoly on violence as a political strategy. Get over yourself, conservatives are just as bad or worse.

It only takes an incident like this to bring this full circle. When they break into a home with someone prepared on the other end I'm sure a full investigation would ensue. Hopefully this would expose SWAT -ing.

Nothing will ever come of investigating "swatting" because swatting itself is a symptom of an out of control authoritarian police state.

There is no reason for SWAT teams to even exist yet every backwater just has to have its own.

To take any steps whatsoever to combat swatting would be a step back from the tyrannical police state.

The only way government would ever handle swatting would be if they could layer on more control and tyranny.

documentation? examples?

Glenn Beck spent some time last year comparing the left to fascists; this is a pretty good example. it is the left, not the right, suppressing free speach by shouting down and demonstrating during speaches (most colleges cannot invite conservative speakers). this is a fascist tactic. it is the left 'swatting' opponents. they cannot win a debate on ideals, or at the least refuse to give the right the respect of a fair hearing. they are a bunch of children putting their hands to their ears 'na na na I'm not listening'.
at some point this goes from pranking to criminal behaviour.
all goes back to Bill Ayers, who advised using ridicule on opponents, as a reasonable debate leginitmizes those who disagree.
the left in this country know the people don't agree with their extremism so thy try to win by default

Examples? Well, without violating Godwin's Law, I can name the conservatives who burn abortion clinics, Joe McCarthy, the Ohio National Guard (Kent State shootings) and George Bush.

Don't forget all the tea partiers who were sent into town hall meetings with orders to disrupt the senators; in many cases being so disruptive the meetings were called off.
The problem is that you will never get through to the people on this site. ATS is where intellectualism comes to die. Most of the posters here only come here because they couldn't handle it on other forums where smart people actually go and debate issues like grown-ups.
It wasn't always this way, but people like the OP and many others ruined it for us.

Hey Spud,

When you've actually been on ATS as a worthwhile contributor, for a somewhat longer period than 2 WEEKS, your 'opinion' of ATS'ers, might actually MEAN something!

Please don't talk like you 'know' the members here, or that you are somehow more intelligent (typical leftie), as you have NO CREDIBILITY here at this time.

Feel free to go back to the forums you and your buddies have chased the rest of us away from (whatever & wherever those are).
