and a book is written by people, not by God. People like to make up non-truth stories and shove it down the throat of others.

There you have it. The bible is just a fiction book.

RELIGION DEBUNKED.

Oh, how I love it when someone tries to reduce thousands of years of history, theology, and personal experience to one single factor and invalidate an entire belief system.

And I'm an agnostic.

The Bible cannot be classified as history or personal experience. That would imply that it's fact, we have no proof of that. I'm not saying anything is true or false, but have you seen "The invention of lying"? It could be very much like that.

I am also Agnostic.

RELIGION DEBUNKED.

Wow!

Debunked because of an obvious statement, made by you?
It will take a little more than that mate. Religion is more than just something written in a book.

Yes, it was written by people, yet is it not possible these people received instruction from a higher power to write it down perhaps? Hrm...

If you don't believe in the ideals of the US Constitution... it is just a piece of paper.

If you don't believe in the commitment and promise behind a gold wedding ring... it is just metal.

If you don't believe in the sacrifice and valor of the US Flag.. it is just a piece of cloth.

If you don't aspire to the work ethics and individuality of a John Deere or farmall tractor... just metal.

If you don't aspire to the spiritual and moral levels in the Bible... just a book.

If you aspire to nothing bigger and better... yours is just another meaningless life... a mere mammal.

We do have proof that there is some actual history within the bible, but it's mixed in with the myth. With that being said, it's probably more like a great work of science fiction writing. We could, for example, write a book about WW2 and then throw a messiah figure in there, and achieve the same historical accuracy as the bible.

Or maybe they just thought they received instructions from a higher power. Deluded people will be deluded.

I would suggest a better place to post this would be Twitter or the Rant section. ATS is a place to deny ignorance, not reveal it.

You may be too young to know this, but do you know that most of the authors who wrote the bible were actual historians? Historians attempt to recreate history. In a nut shell, they attempt to put Humpty Dumpty back together again so we can see him for what he really was.

So as far as your part of half truths, I would strongly disagree. Many other history books (scrolls), from Greece and ancient Rome can substantiate many of the findings in the bible. Not only that but attempt to study some archeology or biblical archeology. This field of study has backed MANY claims found in the bible.

Your problem, or whatever reason, is your so out against authority and those in position to teach you, you could be staring at the truth and not even know it. Think about that for a second, kind of scary. Always keep an open mind. Always.

Slow down on the preaching and if you really want the truth. Open up a book. Talk to a history professor. Find a library. I’m not saying to do this because you’re uneducated. I don’t know if you are or aren’t. But many of these sources can give you a little bit more insight or enlightenment in to your findings. But whatever you’re looking for, keep an open mind.

You’ll be in my prayers.

It's more or less all written with the intent of controlling the public; what religion does is give people a false sense of purpose in life. I say false because it's ultimately self-deception and denial which has kept religion alive throughout the centuries. With that being said, however, Christianity is a mix of Ancient Egyptian theology and Pagan holidays. I'm also pretty sure the entire new testament was written in Rome, there's a mega thread on ATS about it.

This is true, but historians from 2000 years ago are nothing like modern historians. History was very sensationalized back then. If you need further proof of this look at texts like Homer's Odyssey where history and fiction meet to tell an interesting tale. Historians of the past did not strive for accuracy, as they did not exactly have the tools to do so.

And for some, it gives hope in life. If those that choose to put their faith in religion, find a little hope, and peace in it, then let them have it.

I agree that religion is a self obsessed institution that was created for the control of the masses, yet some find solice in it, and I for one, hate to destroy the hopes of those that believe.

Live and let live mate.

The bible is a book in the sense of that it's not something holy. The bible is as valuable as a Donald Duck book.

I get your point man.

I was being sarcastic and try8ing to make a point about your threads of late.

One or two sentences does not an OP make.

Where's the substance?

Where (mods) is the quality control?

To an extent I agree with you; it comes down to the argument of whether blissful ignorance can be substituted for genuine happiness, and in many cases it can, but it's nothing to be proud of and willfully engage in. If there is truth in religion, it's likely within gnosticism, paganism, and shamanism, and other more or less obscure or buried faiths. I say this because I don't see lesser faiths being exploited, and so I don't see them being corrupted. My biggest problem with the church is that it profits from the fear and misery of its subjects.

Powerful?

We can agree to disagree.

I'm agnostic so don't think this is because I'm offended by your opinion.
