I don't believe we are looking at a potential cataclysm here, just a possible growth to the centre of the caldera. I would guess that there would have to be some considerable cone building and an appearance above water even before it gets to the stage of a full blown eruption.

There still seems to be one heck of a lot of something still out there, and the wind has dropped from 24 km/hr to 9 km/hr yet the seismos still look very busy?????

This is all just a huge learning curve for me, yet, 2 years in, looking at those pics... May I be the first to say ''blimey''

The seismos are mostly still showing this activity. The wind has picked back up to 18 km/hr which is nothing really.

It would be good to know what these seismos 'normally' look like because I cannot believe that such a low wind speed would affect these so much. It kind of makes them completely useless as seismograph stations.

CMBO, SANT, THR3, THR5, THR7, THR8

The signal at THR3 @ 0930 could be a passing boat. I certainly hope so as it is right in the centre of the caldera.

Would thunder not affect these instruments? I don't know. Was just curious...

Yes indeed it probably would but it would not produce the continuous signature we are seeing here.

This signal is very similar to volcanic or harmonic tremor, but equally it is similar to wind. As I said earlier i question how these seismos would be any use at all if for example the 9 km/hr signal affected them so badly.

Puterman.....what is your "gut feeling" on this? I know scientific data is what matters, but do you think something is stirring there?

Hasn't Santorini been rumbling for awhile now?? I saw a documentary on the case for Santorini being the source for the story of Atlantis and at the end of the program they say that there are indications that the Volcano is coming back to life. Or, would this be evidence that we are getting closer to a new eruption?

Hi StealthyKat, not sure yet but if something was string I would have thought that it would have come out by now from other channels. It concerns me that IF this is just weather then those seismos are pretty much useless. I am biding my time until the wind drops - which it looks as if it may do by Monday - and then we can see if this has an effect of the instruments.

The reason I am saying this is because I have got a suspicion that the sensitivity of the instruments is turned up high as the 4.2 out by the Turkish coast earlier today showed as a massive signature amongst the other stuff. Take a look at it on THR5 or THR3, yet on SANT it is quite small (look along the 12:00 line you will see the quake about 2/3rds of the way along.)

A drop in the wind would return these to normal if they are over tweaked.

Then you have to ask, why are they set over sensitive.........................

In 1950, the last eruption, Santorini was a VEI 2. Prior to that it erupted (all VEI 2) in 1939, 1928, 1925 and 1866. Prior to that there was a VEI 3 in 1707 and many more going back to the eruption in ~1600 BC which formed the caldera and was possibly a VEI 7

For comparison, Eyjafjallajokull was a VEI 4 and Yellowstone a VEI 8

Even if there is an eruption it is not likely to be large and it will most certainly not be one like the 1600 BC eruption. There would need to be much more cone building going on before that i think.

Could it erupt? Yes maybe it could. They will never see it coming if those instruments are showing wind!

I want to see the archeological excavations on Santorini before it erupts again, so it's not allowed to erupt until then.

I think it is harmonic....but what do I know. I am just a dumb ditch digger(landscraper).

We shall see what becomes of these extra fat squiggles on their fancy graphs.

Thanks PM for the heads up......I love you man....

why does this particular phenomina , ---->increase %, of ,,a V event?
