I do NOT want to get people alarmed as this may just be weather - it is not easy to tell without access to the datasets. I just thought I would bring it to peoples attention in case and especially in view of the recent swarms there and the uplift.

The current weather at the time of snagging these charts is thus:

Wunderground

There are thunderstorm warnings, but this looks too like Harmonic Tremor or Volcanic tremor for my liking.

You can access all these seismograms from here

This one is calmer but there appear to be several microquakes and what could be wind or VT

There was a very deep earthquake there yesterday
Mag 3.2 151 km depth

I have to go out for a while so if you comment and I don't reply, I shall later.

I repeat this is a notification and not an alarm call. It is quite possible that it is weather as IDI.MN..BHZ.2012.139 is showing signs of weather and that station os on Crete. It is 82 miles from Santorini so may not pick up VT or HT anyway. That is the closest publicly available station to get a dataset from.

ARG.HL..HHZ.2012.139 on Rhodes is showing something but is 150 miles from Santorini. This is a 100 sps station however again the 40 sps for IDI. I will have a listen to it when I come back in.

Flagged

This is all Greece and the whole Mediterranean for that matter needs!

Thanks for the heads up..

Lets hope its just the wind, but that uplift cant be disputed....

Nice catch Puterman.
Quite a few small earthquakes on those seismos. I don't know what to make of the 'tremor'-looking signal. Digging around, I found some webcams. It looks like a rain storm on this one.

I can't find any recent news stories, but look forward to any updates.

haha and only yesterday wI was thinking, I wonder what message will be send to Greece for disrupting the EU.

I was thinking an Earthquake or tsunami, but I guess a volcano will just do fine.

Notice how these "natural" occurring events are pretty pinpointed to certain country's hehe

my friend and I have been following this 'pattern' since last year, some countries that suddenly get a 'quake we jokingly say..."what have they done to upset 'them'?"...then lo and behold a few days later there's some sort of political shananigans going on!

Yes I agree there is rain but the wind speed off the Wunderground site is only 24 km/h / 6.7 m/s from West which is nothing, hardly even a light breeze and I would not have thought enough to do that to the seismos.

The main problem for me is that I do not know these seismos well, in fact at all, so it is difficult to make a judgement on what we are seeing.

I believe one of the concerns about the whole Greek situation is whether monitoring facilities like this will be able to continue if it all goes bottoms up.

There are very few 'international' stations that are available to us and that are within a distance suitable for picking up what is happening.

You may recall for example that when El Hierro was showing tremor - looking like this - other stations in the vicinity were showing nothing at all.

I don't believe we are looking at a potential cataclysm here, just a possible growth to the centre of the caldera. I would guess that there would have to be some considerable cone building and an appearance above water even before it gets to the stage of a full blown eruption.

I'm not convinced about it being weather, but it still could be the case.
The "activity" showing up as different scaling and seismos around there could indicate some kind of geological activity.

If only we had the same info as the IGN El hierro stuff. Those spectograms were priceless during the underwater eruption.

Puterman,
Have you a way to convert that data in some kind of spectogram to see in which hz range this stuff is situated?

I have had a listen to the distant station HL.ARG, which is too far away to detect tremor i think, but I can confirm that many of those 'blips' are indeed earthquakes and distant ones at that. Unfortunately because of the signals present that appear to be microseisms it is difficult to pinpoint the start of the P and S waves but I make it ~245 km.

I had not checked this until posting but that is 153 miles so is spot on for coming from Santorini.

I have filtered down to 2 Hz to remove the ton of magnetic/solar transmission stuff and am left with this, but the microseisms are also at the level and so interefere with the quake signal.

The spectrograph of that @ 5sps is

(This was at 2000Hz so divide the left hand margin figures by 5 to get back to the original seismo 50 cps.

You can download the sound of that one here (zip file) (Sorry it has to be zipped otherwise it plays immediately which is against the T & C)

It is very quiet.

I was doing just that as you posted. Unfortunately very distant seismo. I will see if I can get hold of the Greek data from somewhere.

By the way this is the unfiltered spectrogram

You can see the transmission interference (and I can hear that as typical solar/magnetic) which is all in the 8 Hz to 23 Hz range. The seismic signals are all below 2 Hz.

I just came across this page which is quite uselfull. It has links for the Santorini portable seismos

bbnet.gein.noa.gr...

Now, this is important. Look at the map and find IOS north of Santorini.

This is the trace: bbnet.gein.noa.gr...

Now compare that to ANAF which is East of Santorini and is in the area of current earthquake activity: bbnet.gein.noa.gr...

Then look at any of the others on Santorini: bbnet.gein.noa.gr...

Question is does this show that Santorini is having more weather than the other two, or more tremor? The fact that ANAF has signs of it as well may be significant.

Hey PM, I was just about to post the link with the map for the Santorini temporary seismos.

The ANAF seismo is offline: the date on your link is May 16th.

So they are, I never noticed!

That is kind of not good then since there are elements of the signal in both of those from 2 days ago.

By the way SAP2 is on the east side which is where the earthquake activity seems to be. The wind, such as it is, is coming from the West. Would the seismo on the eastern side be shielded from it? It is the one showing the strongest signal.

APE further North is not showing much

Thanks Puterman.

It may be data from quite a distant but it's still useful.
To me it looks a bit like the data we were able to see on the other seismographs surrounding El Hierro during the eruption there.

I've no sounds here, at work, but I trust your confirmation about the blips being quakes.

Very interresting.

That is a good thought about the mountains slowing the wind. I think it would.
It looks as if it is only the ANAF station that is not current.

Looking at this Google Map, do you think any of the signals could be from ship traffic?

IDK...it does look like tremor. I just keep hoping it isn't.

On the assumption that ships would show on seismos something like diesel locomotives I would have said probably not but having never positively identified a ship from a signal I don't know. I suppose it is a possibility.

We seem to have a new signal at SANT
