He used a Bluray disc burner laser and replaced the toy's LED. Using an AA battery, it is strong enough to burn wood, rubber, or plastic if focused on it for a long time. There are other videos on Youtube that demonstrate that. Still pretty cool. Now if only someone developed a working transporter, we wouldn't need cars, planes, or boats to travel...

Nice to see people have finally found at least some use for the Playstation 3

.... so it's a laser that pops balloons and makes sounds entirely separate from the laser? I'm more excited about my neighbor's dog not pooping on my lawn for the first time, honestly.

You know that the Army already have something much more lethal and powerful but still.... looks pretty easy to make!

This may not be the most important of comments, but me being a Trekkie myself, I feel like bursting out a big "YES" here! I've seen this before on Kipkay's youtube and was making one myself, however the diode I had did not work. Anyone know where to find a good one to pop balloons and light off cigarettes? (And anything else they can do...) ? Thanks!

Post Scriptum:

How do I edit my profile pic/ avatar on this site?

I was hoping somebody had read the book by Maurice Cotterell "Future Science, Forbidden Science" and used his theories on the mechanism of gravity and the Hyrogen bond. In an interview on C2C, he predicted somebody would weaponize his discovery and make a Star Trek fazer.

The guy in the video appears to be a talented geek (the good kind) to make a toy. Cotterell mentioned some Russians who demonstrated an antigravity device who applied for a patent but could not get one because they could not describe the physical mechanism at work.

After hearing the interview, I envisioned a working model of the Russians invention and Cotterell's model by taking a DVD turntable and mounting magnets on the edge which were made to spin on an axis 90 degrees apart from the axis of the DVD.

We are on the verge on incredible breakthroughs in science. Something is happening. In addition to the global awakening of governance, our brains are also waking up to practical insights for inventions.

The guy took a Blu Ray laser, soldered two wires together, took some batteries and put them in a plastic toy phaser's casing.

Come on now, my kid nephew could do it.

This has absoluetly nothing to do with real science, Russians and anti gravity technology.

What I'm seeing is more of a devolution if peoole think this thread is about something extra ordinairy.

But seriously, I do agree we are on the verge of a major paradigm shift, science and philosophy wise.

This is a message to the alien ship trolling this small colony: You are shooting at a fun thread. Everybody knows it's a toy. The only one not getting the fun seems to be you. If you need guidance, please respond.

Like I already said, this thread should be in the Jokes section, Chit Chat or even Hoax. judging from the replies I'm sure that not everybody is joking, buddy.

THAT IS SO COOL, its such a strange feeling seeing something now REAL, that was just fiction a little while ago.

And yes please, guide me towards the fun, my sensors are not picking up on it, must be the singularity that is jamming it.

Never been much of a Trekky so that could be it too.

That must be it. A trekkie get's all exited when seeing just the slightest hint of something in the real worlds that just wasn't no way get out of here not in a million years possible a few decades ago.

A trekkie will call trektech at anything remotely looking like something from the series. You know.. like a mobile phone being a tricorder or a combadge. A foodprinter being a replicator. An ipad being.. ehm those ipads they walk around with all the time.. 3d tv being holodeck tech etc etc. And in a way it is amazing tech.

You might consider that trekkies are mostly from the pre internet era. All this stuff wasn't there. They had crude canons that fired electrons at chemical enhanced matrixes forming moving pictures so they could watch facepalms now and then. They had to wait a week to see the next episode. There was no ondemand and when summer came the one station airing the series always pushed the resetbutton on their C64 so when autumn came they started the season all over again never airing a complete season.

Now if a toy looks just like a phaser, sounds like a phaser, and produces a beam that is visible in normal light like a phaser, to a trekkie it is pure technology. Oh he knows it is a toy, but to see something out of the series almost perfectly replicated into the real world... Oke it does not kill aliens, but that's a small detail... look at it, it even pops balloons! Epic!

It isn't like calling a speck of light in a black background bouncing around cause tripods are expansive and iphones are crap an alien invasion.

Granted, it isn't real tech. You made your point.

Just report the thread being in the wrong forums and leave it to the mods?

Anyway, Cool!!

so dammed fake - its a laser dressed up in a star-trek prop , with added soundeffects

You must have not read post #2 by Lightspeeddrive. It tells just what it is and how it was made. It is a supercharged toy. It will pop ballons and can even set fire ti some things if left on long enough.

Really lame was expecting something better... That is not a real Star Trek Phaser. Just a toy with a measly laser inside that can only pop a balloon. No advances in technology have been made here folks.

I am sure this weapon would be a great addition to your
"empire's" arsenal. You could practice firing it at your enemies
strongholds.

missed this one yesterday.....thanks MSN for digging up old info... this is 2 years old.

It is real,.. not a phaser, just a laser but it is very real.

And ignore that BS kipkay video with the PS3 diode with a 9v and resistor,.. that idiot doesn't know anything about electronics. Laser diodes need a current regulated driver not voltage, and there is no way in hell a >50mw laser is going to be as good as the 1.5W that Jayrob used in his.

Here is a link on the thread where it was made with the original designer and at one point he was even selling DIY kits. I post there as 110100100

laserpointerforums.com...

Its a bit better than a 'measly laser' it can be built with a Sanyo 445nm wavelengthe diode that is capable of outputting more than 2W of blue photons. Pop balloons, burn wood, melt plastic, instantly blind you and literally boil the fluid in your eye,... far from being a toy.
