Yeah we trekkies can be pretty anal about trek lore. You can sum it up by asking them one question....how many episodes are there in the original series. Anal people will count the pilot episode. It's actually provable. Go ask a trekkie.
things can get damn nerdy real fast.

- 1: Laser - the most obvious of all - just a high power laser beam, in the KW range, would suffice for some 'phaser-like' effects.
- 2: IPC - Ionised Plasma Channel - Using, typically, a UV Laser to ionise a path through the air that electrical current can flow through - think wireless taser. This would facilitate a 'stun' capability
- 3: FEL - Free Electron Laser - Essentially a different type of laser which collimates electrons into a beam, and is powerful enough, in principle, to provide a 'vaporising' effect if the power was high enough.
I posit that if it was possible to combine all 3 of these technologies into a decent sized device, you would have a directed energy weapon with the functionality of a 'StarTrek' phaser. The only obstable to such a construction would be the miniturization of the FEL assembly (usually big, lab-only devices) and, the big one, (and the main reason we dont have star-trek type technology currently) is power source. Would need KW/MW levels of power to function, something only possible with full on power stations.......
Thats my idea.........

Where do you think we currently are on your 'chain-of-scale'?
I'd say Humvee - but would you not agree the major issue is power supply, which is why it has needed huge structures to mount to, to provide the chemicals/pure energy storage needed for such a device to function?
Speculation now - Nuclear fusion - providing it actually works and provides more energy than is required to start the reaction, do you think it would be scalable? i.e., dare i say it, Micro fusion reactors? Do we think this would be the enabling technology for portable and handheld energy weapons?
(I leave out LENR/CF as it is not viable/conclusively proven/even understood yet)

THAT IS SO COOL, its such a strange feeling seeing something now REAL, that was just fiction a little while ago.

I think if you were to start waving that thing at drones there would be much police activity around you before you could blink.
