Yeah we trekkies can be pretty anal about trek lore. You can sum it up by asking them one question....how many episodes are there in the original series. Anal people will count the pilot episode. It's actually provable. Go ask a trekkie.

things can get damn nerdy real fast.

I gratefully accept your award, and dedicate it to logical reasoning, the preservation of fact and the ever pervading presence of actual reality.

Being a trekky myself, the only trek stuff that interests me would be a 'real-world' implementation of some star trek technology.

Anyone have any good, scientific theories on how such a real device could be fashioned? How would it function? Would it use photons as in the Laser, or something else?

Ill even start the ball rolling.....

- 1: Laser - the most obvious of all - just a high power laser beam, in the KW range, would suffice for some 'phaser-like' effects.
- 2: IPC - Ionised Plasma Channel - Using, typically, a UV Laser to ionise a path through the air that electrical current can flow through - think wireless taser. This would facilitate a 'stun' capability
- 3: FEL - Free Electron Laser - Essentially a different type of laser which collimates electrons into a beam, and is powerful enough, in principle, to provide a 'vaporising' effect if the power was high enough.

I posit that if it was possible to combine all 3 of these technologies into a decent sized device, you would have a directed energy weapon with the functionality of a 'StarTrek' phaser. The only obstable to such a construction would be the miniturization of the FEL assembly (usually big, lab-only devices) and, the big one, (and the main reason we dont have star-trek type technology currently) is power source. Would need KW/MW levels of power to function, something only possible with full on power stations.......

Thats my idea.........

The laser approach is still being worked on.

Please tell me you are all joking and don't think this really is something special.

Science and Technology? How bout Jokes, Puns and Pranks?

13 flags for this and some for the perpetual machine thread also just posted here on ATS?

Did everybody get wasted last night? Must be with this level of impaired judgement.

Where do you think we currently are on your 'chain-of-scale'?
I'd say Humvee - but would you not agree the major issue is power supply, which is why it has needed huge structures to mount to, to provide the chemicals/pure energy storage needed for such a device to function?

Speculation now - Nuclear fusion - providing it actually works and provides more energy than is required to start the reaction, do you think it would be scalable? i.e., dare i say it, Micro fusion reactors? Do we think this would be the enabling technology for portable and handheld energy weapons?

(I leave out LENR/CF as it is not viable/conclusively proven/even understood yet)

Hard to say. That article on wiki is old. Who knows where it is in private.

You're right though. Its all about compact power generation and thermal management. Much the same as railgun development is.

The same applies to other things, e.g. robotics and exoskeletons.

The navy funding Polywell research tells you what they think. Compact Aneutronic Fusion is the challenge of the 21st century. If we crack that nothing will stop us.

THAT IS SO COOL, its such a strange feeling seeing something now REAL, that was just fiction a little while ago.

I've been wanting to ask you this. Why do you have a name that is basically trolling against at least half of the membership here?

If I would call myself Womanhater I would never hear the end of it, and rightfully so.

You hate half of the membership, but you expect the whole of the membership to constantly listen to the problems in your personal life?
