I knew a guy that for years he would swallow spit. Yes thats right his own saliva. Only in small dosses. But he did it for years. Know what? He died at 28!

If someone jumps off a building we can't (some will) blame the building.

Maybe we should mandate all buildings be built no higher than ground level. Wow, no one would ever die from jumping, falling or being pushed off any buildings any more! I think I just came up with a brilliant idea!

You'll see Barack Hussein all over this one in a few days. And his lovely
wife will be all over the coke thing. Like a fat kid on a cupcake!

Its because of the acidity. Lemon juice will do the same thing.

For a normal sized person, no.
But I had some large friends who would go through 2 -2L of Mountain Dew a day. That is still only 4 L, bu I am sure a practised person can do 8.

How can a 112 lb Asian guy win the hot dog eating contest?

Anyone ever hear about using coke to remove rust from chrome bumpers? I tried it years ago and guess what it worked.

[n]Coke doesn't have sugar in it, it has high fructose corn syrup, which is an entirely different thing.

huh? high fructose corn syrup means it's corn syrup thats high (dense) in corn SUGAR.

and yea, NYPD hallmarkly uses coke/pepsi to wash blood stains every day, every hour, off sidewalks and driveways after stabbings, drive-bys, homicides, etc.

apparently the phosporic acid and carbonate bubbles are quite surfecant for blood proteins, etc.

I really wish people would research more before posting.

The "corrosive" nature of "Coke" is the same as any carbonated beverage.

The quality of "Coke" to clean your battery terminals or take the rust off a bumper is due to the carbonic acid found in all carbonated beverages.

Coca-Cola does contain small amounts of citric acid and phosphoric acid; however, all the insinuations about the dangers these acids might pose to people who drink Coca-Cola ignore a simple concept familiar to any first-year chemistry student: concentration. Coca-Cola contains less citric acid than does orange juice, and the concentration of phosphoric acid in Coke is far too small (a mere 11 to 13 grams per gallon of syrup, or about 0.20 to 0.30 per cent of the total formula) to dissolve a steak, a tooth, or a nail overnight. (Much of the item will dissolve eventually, but after a day or two you'll still have most of the tooth, a whole nail, and one very soggy T-bone.) Besides, the gastric acid in your stomach is much stronger than any of the acids in Coca-Cola, so the Coca-Cola is harmless.

Snopes

Now, I am not saying that drinking large amounts of ANY carbonated/caffeinated/HFS/High sugar ...etc, is healthy.

But lets at least get the basic chemistry right

And I have drank double that amount since I was 16 and I am now forty and still kicking. Fail. Genetic disease is a darn crazy thing.

If you've had bad things happen to you
whether it's health, relationships or financial
it's because of choices. You were not strong.
Like Lance Armstrong. That is BS!!!!

The chemical make-up of this poor womans brain
was one of uncontrollable addiction.
It's so easy to say she was weak.
But that is not correct.

Ever seen a little old lady with oxygen tubes
smoking and staring at a slot machine in Vegas?
That's chemistry at work,not choices.
Corporations (&Casinos) know exactly how these "customers" function.
So please don't say, "poor corporations, what did they do?"
I'll tell you what they did. They studied and had marketing focus groups
come up with the concoctions that reel these Bread and Butter customers in.
For Life.

then why do they add even more acid (phosphoric) if there is already carbonic and citric acid in the mix?

comparing to gastric/stomach acid (HCL) is quite desperrate because gastric acid does not swish around our teeth, mouth, gums, throat.

and then theres the amount of sugar and empty calories, only now is Coca-Cola reducing the amount of carcinogenic burnt sugar (4-methylimidazole) and only to avoid having to put a cancer warning label on each can/bottle of coke/pepsi etc

This post got me thinking about my deceased brother-in-law. He used to drink 6 to 12 cans of Pepsi a day, he was totally addicted. He also smoked cigarettes.

He developed a weird fat gut, like he swallowed a beach ball, but it was hard as a rock.

Then he got sleep apnea and started having trouble with acid reflux. Then he started having trouble swallowing.

Endoscopy showed an aggressive tumor in the lower esophagus and upper stomach. So they removed most of his esophagus, all of his stomach, and part of his small intestine. They had to "make' a stomach out of small intestine material, which doesn't function well at all.

He spent the next four years miserable and threw up most of what he ate. He died at age 44 when the cancer metastasized throughout his system.

I always felt that the excessive consumption of Pepsi was to blame for his early demise.

I know another lady who is a Coca-Cola addict, who had most of her stomach removed in her early 40s. She still insists on drinking it. As you can imagine, she is very unhealthy.

I gave up all carbonated beverages 3 years ago. The first few months were torture, I had the feeling that I couldn't slake my thirst unless what I drank was carbonated. After a while, I learned that the best thirst quencher was water. I cannot tolerate soda now, drinking it makes me sick.

Soda is like anything else.....Too much will destroy your health. I think about my brother-in-law often as I see mothers give toddlers soda pop in their baby bottles.

Hey, I am not saying it is a good thing, don't shoot the messenger.I am just quoting the snopes article that addresses some of the stories in this thread. If you read the snopes article, it directly quotes some of the stories.

I just wanted to point out that it is the carbonic acid ,that is all carbonated beverages, that gives Coke the majority of its acidic quality.

I believe the other acids (citric and phosphoric) are there for flavor. Again I am not saying that it is healthy, just pointing out the basic chemistry.

I have a friend that drinks gallons of htis stuff every day and she's still 40 and kicking.

She is obese though. But it's diet soda...

Well... (ok, so....)

I was going to make a post and pretend that it's fine to eat ***** because you'll live to 100 anyway. I mean, "My grandpa drank and smoked 2 packs a day and ate garbage and lived to 100!!!"

But... *shakes head*

Actually, my grandpa did live to 100. He did drink and was even borderline-diabetic for a while. He did like microwave dinners. He liked chocolates. He wasn't perfect. But he also loved to make ham hock soup (w/ potatoes) and had recipes that included meat and vegetables. He liked tomatoes. Oatmeal in the morning. He worked a lot in his life. He kept in shape. He had vegetable gardens. He even had a chicken coup for fresh eggs. He exercised and cut down trees and mowed his land and did all that into his early 90's. He was a logger. Living to 100 isn't free and it's very rare. Don't be stupid.

Living to old age isn't beautiful. It's dirty, smelly, wrinkly, and even hurts. The good ol' days...

But if you DO want the chance to live that long then...

Don't drink soda!!!!!!!!!!! Gawd, you don't need it. Life has so much more to offer.

You can't eat whatever you wnat to eat!

Food is not created equally!!!!!! Our body isn't endlessly capable of taking what we eat.

Generally, it's a good idea to balance your diet. But this doesn't mean you should take plutonium and unleaded gas supplements. Balance is a good idea when we don't know everything. But be smart! You can't live on ignorance for very long. Our bodies are very vulnerable when it comes down to it.

Number #1 thing is make sure you have a job so you can take care of yourself.

Last year the Southland Times reported Ms Harris's autopsy showed she had a diseased liver but the cause of death was undetermined.

Mr Hodgkinson said he had been informed his partner, and the mother of their eight children, had a heart aneurysm caused by too much Coca-Cola.

From the OP link. A diseased liver at 30???? Regardless of the exact caustic ingredient, the combination of them in soda pop just isn't good and should be consumed minimally. I don't think there is one healthy thing about soda pop or kool-aid type drinks. But......a cold one on a hot day sure goes down nice.

Ah, yes, legalize PCP, meth, and every other drug so that idiots can lapse into drug-induced psychosis and kill innocent "smart" people. Sounds like a plan.

Oh yes, so many people were being killed over drugs when they weren't illegal!
It's not like Coca Cola ever contained the unprocessed de-coc ained leaf of the Coca plant, is it?

edit on 19/4/12 by LightSpeedDriver because: Clarification

In its early days it did contain cocain - that is how it got its name.

Now it allegedly contains HOMEOPATHIC COCAINE

8 liters of coke, that is 4 of those big bottles from the store, every day she drank. the caffiene is equal to 32 6 ounce cups of coffee. the corn syrup is 864 grams equals 64 tablespoons of sugar.

She was obviously addicted. I have a family member that is addicted to diet pepsi, I buy boxes of cans and hide them, and dole out 3 cans a day. when they go out to eat they will have 3 refills on their soda from the waiter/waitress.

If I didn't hide them he would go through really fast. The worst times is when he is playing video games. the weird part is, the more caffeine he has, the more subdued he is (he is very ADD) he is a little over weight but has big belly.

remember, if you stop caffeinated soda cold turkey, get a little caffeine form some thing because, sudden caffeine withdrawal causes really bad headaches.

well said! keeping balanced, independent, and self-sufficient are vital to health!

nowadays its hard to be zoned for allowed poultry unless in the boonies, alot of suburbs and subrurals areas are banning agricultural ops even just a backyard plot or coup. fines fines income for greedy/broke inefficient counties.

i dont know how centenarians make it these days. but it is inspiring! i'd hate to be a burden on anyone in my 70s-80s+ and i dont see how these teens and young adults and grown men/women (including my sibling) can get away with all these addictions and lack of self control look at the OP subject she didnt live a year past 30!

what a waste of life. waste not want not! life is precious, its a slap in the face to our parents and our God to just abuse our life, our bodies, with excess vices poisons and crap!

i heard soft drinks have a tendency to make you feel thirsty and so has the added effect of you wanting to go back to drink more. kind of a vicious cycle, the caffeine content definitly does not help neither.

but anyway in moderation its not that bad, anything more than 2 can per day is approaching excessive. it should also be noted that some people are just blessed with good genes, they can put anything into their bodies and live to 100+. but you never know if that is you or not.. so question is, is it worth the risk?
