theres a warning in 28 countries, guess they are so precautions given the 200K death toll in the previous Aceh Tsunami!

You'll likely be hearing this one noted as 8.6 to 9.1 throughout the media.
If there is another quake, you'll definitely know about it.

Not saying I think there is a link but the antipodal point of this large Banda Aceh quake is also in an active region - South America to be precise - so if there is a link tectonically we should watch for activity there in the next few hours / days perhaps ?

- A tsunami warning has been issued as Indonesia’s geophysical agency has registered an 8.9 magnitude earthquake in the Aceh region, off the western coast of northern Sumatra.

- USGS has calculated that 547,000 people will have experienced a MMI VII Very strong shaking. Earthquake-Report.com does NOT expect shaking victims BUT we expect serious danger for the Northern Sumatra coast (Banda Aceh area) and Simeulue island, both areas who were hardest hit in the earlier tsunamis

- USGS has decreased his initial magnitude from 8.9 to 8.7. Other agencies are reporting lower values (a big difference)

- NOAA is publishing good news for the USA west coast : …A STRONG EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED BUT A TSUNAMI IS NOT EXPECTED ALONG THE CALIFORNIA/ OREGON/ WASHINGTON/BRITISH COLUMBIA OR ALASKA COASTS… NO WARNING… NO WATCH AND NO ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THESE AREAS.

The depth of the water makes a big difference in tsunami size, more water above the quake means more displacement, I have a feeling, looking at the map this will be a big tsunami

Ah well they zapped me so here I am!

OK, this quake at Magnitude 8.7 is about 4 times weaker than the 2004 Banda Aceh 9.1 @ 2818.4 petajoules of energy. This one comes in at about 708 PJ.

If it is reduced to and 8.6 it is 5.6 times weaker.= at 502 PJ
