That is actually the image that convinced me that this is in fact a raccoon

They can be tough to identify when they get crazy skin diseases. I had a hunter shoot a hell of a buck with mange that looked crazy. I'm looking for the picture now.

Please look at the feet

No raccoon has feet like that

With that said ..

How big is the creature compared to say a man's size 11 shoe?
How long is the tail ?

I'll try again but if this doesn't help I don't know what will. Look at the curve of the front pads. It is clearly a raccoon. Besides they are paws, not feet.

All I know is this guy is so sad, you shot his dog....

Hairless chimps aside...
has anyone speculated the poor thing looks like a refugee from a fire?

Oh long johnson that chimp looks terrible.

It's pretty sad that as soon as we see something we don't understand, we gets our guns and shoot it!!! Shoot first, ask "WTF" later!

But either way, if it was mangey and not in good health, it's probably better off being dead, or if it was some diseased animal, better off for everything else. Coulda been a really ugly friendly critter, loyal as the day is long...

I am really sorry. I have made an attempt at placing a photo on ATS for the first time.
and did not get it.
I have been frightened to ever try and I found some good raccoon track drawings
and tried to put then on but my fears were founded. I failed

Sorry to all

Easiest way I have found is get the pic you want to post and right click on it. Copy URL and then in your ATS post box click"image" above the box and a little box will pop up, put the URL there. Even if it doesn't imbed you can still click the link and see it.

I respectfully disagree with raccoon idea....the paws are not even close.

How?

Hairless raccoon image postged in thread:

ops image:

Obviously they won't appear 100% identical but the similarity is close enough to rule out any unknown creature.

Or are you saying the image in the referred image is also not a raccoon? I am not familiar with them irl so I have no idea, just that it seems good enough a match that these two are of the same species.

The first image you posted is a DNA proven raccoon in Texas that someone thought was a strange creature. The second picture is the one in question. I know it can be tough to recognize animals when they have no hair but you and I thought it was pretty obvious it was a raccoon. Then again I have owned one as a pet and trapped and killed thousands.

Can you link the image again, I tried to go to the website, but it redirects to a message about consolidated url's or something, and no reference to the image.

www.dnr.wi.gov/eek/critter/mammal/raccoon.htm

was the image link you posted, but it results in

dnr.wi.gov/newurl.html

No, I am certain you are correct, I was posting both images together for reference to the person I replied to, who says it is not one.

Personally, I've never seen one, so I can only go by the two images which if I were asked at any other time, I'd say were the same species of animal.

And if I were to encounter one of these things on a vacant lot, I can imagine how people would conjure up stories of a supernatural beast, sucking the blood from their goats, lol..

lol, the feet/paw thing was just a little forum poking fun. Believe me it happens a lot around here. I think some people are here just to correct grammar and spelling.
