this is the one to stick with. I did read
damage reports are coming in - anyone
know more about that?

We're busy arguing about the 188 day theory. lol

So does this give credibility to the 188 day cycle theory? It is pretty spot on for this quake if you ask me. I know some are going to say it happened in a hot spot which is true, but it's hard to deny the accuracy.

Why is it hard? Considering today is only the 187th day....

And you forgot that I actually KNOW how often earthquakes above 7.0 happen in the world.

Those quakes happen once per month, at best. Sometimes, it takes almost 2 months for one above 7.0 to hit somewhere.

Lol, I didn't "forget", you didn't bother to include that in your example.
Regardless, ok...I give up. Major quakes (is it 7.0 or did you settle on 7.5? Does it really matter?) happen at 188 day intervals--as well as at other times.
Great. And from that we can conclude.....
....absolutely nothing.

I do agree with your viewpoint upto certain extent. However everything starts with a Concept, a Theory etc etc.
Just have to wait and see if indeed its a valid theory or holds some ground perhaps into the future?

Considering quakes of this magnitude aren't necessarily rare, I don't think treating it with the +/- 1 day is a very good idea....

It was actually 187 MAYBE 188, but definitely not the 186th.

If you want to scrutinize a theory that is off by a few hours be my guest. I am going to be paying closer attention to this to see how the next one plays out.

We should wait until AFTER the target date, to draw conclusions based on a margin of error. The window JUST opened if you do 188 +/- 1 day..

well if we are counting this one as "large" then this occurs on the frequency of 18 times or so a year. so a lot more frequently than 188 days.

I cant even believe you guys are seriously discussing this? Yes, you figured it out. Good work ATS! Geologist and Seismologist around the world are applauding your efforts for figuring out what they never could!

Enough.

It's time for some critical thinking up in here. Allow me to do it for you:

Earthquake Recent History

Those of you desperately trying to find meaning in the mundane, perhaps you could be so kind as to actually do some research before you start quivering in your boots.

That's right, folks. Earthquakes happen damn near every day. If you only look for them every 188 days, you'll find a pattern.

Duh.

We know earthquakes happen every day, but a 7+ earthquake are not as common. In fact your link doesn't have one quake listed around a 7 or higher. So understand what it making people noticed this event. I'm not saying I agree with the 188 day theory just yet, but it is a little interesting that it was predicted to be a 7+ magnatude off the Pacific ocean and once you include leap year, 188/187 is today. Maybe it's also a foreshock, we'll see!

For those who are questioning my stance on the theory:

I'm 80% but I'm not gonna just take the first thing that comes, a full DAY early to try and prove myself right.. This is kind of a very serious thing we're trying to prove..
