So its the cops fault for her trying to escape? I guess when an inmate breaks out of prison its the guards fault too...

You might be starting to get it.
Yes. It is usually the fault of prison guard(s) when an inmate escapes. You see, that is their job as a prison guard, to keep the inmates inside the prison. But you knew that, right?

Once the girl was cuffed and taken into the police station, she should be prevented from just walking out. I don't recall any part of the story where a gang broke her out.

What if before she was cuffed, would it be okay then? It doesn't really matter, the law is the way it is because society made it that way. Last time I checked nobody was worried about how people are treated badly when they're running from the police.

As much as I love ATS, why does there have to be so much cop hate?
Yes, corrupt police officers exist---but can you imagine the United States with no Executive Branch, police specifically? Overall I think we should appreciate the police, even if sometimes they make mistakes and sadly some of them are "evil."

As for this specific case, it all could have been avoided if she didn't run: simple as that.
Respect the police and treat them as officers and you won't get a taser to the back.
What made this woman think running was a good idea? Sounds to me like she was brain-dead already.
Not to underplay the horrible situation---my heart goes out to her family and friends, and I hope she recovers.

I'm not going to go back and forth with you all night, its obvious that we wont see eye to eye on this.... I believe this whole situation could have been avoided if she didnt try to escape. I dont blame the cops for taking down a perp trying to escape, thats what criminals do... I do blame the girl for being a total dumbass.... She knew what she was doing, she tried to escape, she didnt weigh the consequences, and she was dealt a harsh punishment.... Its not like the cop was tryind to cause her braindamage, he used a Less than Lethal weapon he receives from the police dept to use in situations just like that... He used it, unfortunate circumstance...

Simple solution, when handcuffed, dont run.... If she stands still she doesnt have brain damage...FACT

Over 500 Taser induced deaths doesn't make it Less than lethal, it makes it LESS LETHAL, there is a difference.

Yeah, I'm going to bed. I have a job, never been arrested and never given a cop a problem. I know that I won't turn any of you cops away from your fraternity.

That's why they have that FOP. Fraternal Order of Police. They is brothers.

I am so disappointed with ATS. “Deny Ignorance”? I’m certainly not seeing a whole lot of that going on in this particular thread. What is with all the hate? I would expect more out of ATS and its members. How embarrassing!

Wow, everyone is too quick to play the blame game. No one can judge what what going through that cops head when he decided to use the tazer.

For one if she was as drugged up as others mention he may have determined that putting an end to the chase quickly would be far safer for her than allowing a small drugged up woman to run right into traffic, right into a wall or right off of a big drop. He may have made the decision to taze her specifically based on a judgement call of her overall safety.

However this likely would have been avoided alltogether if the cop had been paying closer attention to the prisoner. That she got away should show some kind of negligence at least and I garauntee you he will live with this decision weighing down on him for a long time.

I do have to agree though that how do these active cops not have some sort of physical, something like firefighters. If he were in better shape and better trained he may have been able to chase her downand restrain her without tackling or any other action that may have caused the same result.

Oh and to all those posted that have something to say about a cops weight, try working a few months on their shift work and see if you can eat right and maintain a consistent work out regiment.

I do and I have lost over 30lbs in the last year. I carry my own food, workout five days a week, and pull 12 - 16 hour shifts. Most of the officers I work with bike, run, or work out on a consistent basis and can still pass the POPAT.

I get tired of hearing officers fail to take responsibility for their own bad health and inability to keep up on the job.

I agree with you completely. Cops should be physically fit enogh to perform what there suppose to do, chase down a suspect(including on foot). This chick just took of the cop didn't even attempt to chase her.

The use of tasers among the police force is far to common. Tasers should be restricted to the police force in my opinion. Far to many deaths and serious injuries have occurred.

This will probably come to a surprise, I'm not a cop, nor do I have any family members who are cops. Sure they're citizens, but they're not going to change how everybody else views this. I won't run, so personally this won't be a problem for me.

Murder. Manslaughter.

There is no justice if the only path to punish this killer is the judicial system.

She ran from a police officer...what more needs to be said?

For the record, I am against tasers, but he could have also chased her down, tackled her and caused the same brain damage as it notes in the article that her injuries were caused by her fall and not by the taser.

Would people be up in arms if he did this and it had the same outcome? No. Everyone would be saying that she deserved it because she ran.

Because cops are what Americans should really be afraid of. Killing people for no reason. You are far more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist. Most of us have been mistreated by cops, and had our rights violated by them. People that don't hate cops are probably the people that aren't aware that they don't have to say "how high" when a cop says jump. Cops do more bad than good nowadays.

I was harassed by a highway patrol once, and at the time I was pissed. But to say they do more harm than good? I suppose it depends where you live. Being born and raised in a small city, the local police are kind, understanding, and really seem to be on our side: they often let us go for minor misdemeanors and never harass us.

I can't say what it's like in a bigger city, as I don't live in one.

Let me ask you, and please, be honest: Have you really never called the police and had them help you?
Several times in my life my house has been broken into (or similar events) and I have been eternally thankful to the police. Now, to put that in context, I actually do have a gun for self defense if my family was ever put in immediate danger; but knowing I can call the police and have a swift response lets me sleep a little better at night.

I just think saying they do more harm than good is a vast exaggeration: Think of the number of rapists and pedophiles in prison: I think that out-numbers the number of brain-dead women caused by the police.

I'm just going to say this instead of reading everything back and forth.
All police are trying to do is to make money to support their messed up beauracracy through handing out tickets and DUI's. When I was in college there was a sign when you first came into Ellensburg that proudly said:

OVER 500 DUI'S SERVED THIS YEAR. That's right they would actually write the exact number of DUI's per year on that sign. And the people that lived in Ellensburg that weren't students were ALL ABOUT MAKING MONEY OFF OF RICH COLLEGE KIDS PARENTS, through high rental rate, thru taxi servicess from college kids getting their liscenses suspended, through parking fines, speeding tickets, DUI's, etc... anything that could get the town an extra buck. Hell I was in a car with my LAWYER and he got pulled over and fined for going 30 in a 25 on the outskirts of town. I eventually got run out of town and had to finish college somewhere else because of constant harassasment because I was the only kid with a customized charcoal grey 2002 4.6 liter stang.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR POLICE!!! If everybody was just smart enough to carry a gun in their house then we would never have the need for them again. But unfortunately that isn't possible so we need to give powers to people with guns for the people that don't have or can't have or don't know/want operating a gun. A town/city/county militia would do a better job and since they would probably know you, there's a chance that they might even respect their fellow neighbors.

The only reason we might need some form of men with guns and badges are for serious matters that are too low key for the army like detectives for rapes, burgluries, serial killers etc... But if your neighbors watched your back etc like a militia there would probably be less of that stuff actually happening.

TELL ME SOMETHING GUYS? WOULD I GET IN TROUBLE FOR PRINTING OUT A FLYER WITH THIS NEWS ALONG WITH A LINK TO THE VIDEO AND HANDED IT OUT OR POSTED IT AT THE LOCAL REGIONAL JUSTICE CENTER WHERE PEOPLE SHOW UP FOR COURT?? JUST SO THEY KNOW WHAT COULD POSSIBLY HAPPEN TO THEM?

Granted she was silly for running while under arrest. That's what some silly young ppl do. But "correction" is supposed to teach to ppl who've not learnt common sense. In this case, there is no chance of correcting this girl's behaviour.

I remember when tasers were introduced. The public jumped up and down, certain police would abuse the weapon. We were assured by police that they would not be used in this way. We were assured tasers would ONLY be used in place of lethal force. The public predicted exactly what we have seen happening time and again - the taser has been abused.

We were told this weapon was to be used in place of a gun. In all instances of taser use, this should be the deciding factor. Would the cop in this incident have normally pulled a gun on this SUSPECT, if he did not have a taser? Think about the "dont tase me bro" student ... would police have normally pulled a gun on him?

It is clear the taser has been misused. Maybe not always, but enough times that it should be removed from police arsenal because it is obvious that SOME POLICE most certainly are bad apples and cant help themselves. At least they MIGHT think twice before using a gun, but it's becoming more and more apparent that they will use a taser without second thought to the consequences.

This officer did not need to tase this girl (no matter what crime she is SUSPECTED of - innocent before proven guilty, and all that). The officer did not even need to tackle her (as was his own description of another option to detain). He most definately could have run just a little, and grabbed her arm. That's all it would have taken to detain this escapee.

Points of accuracy ... she was handcuffed behind, managed to get one hand out while in the police car and recuffed herself with hands in front.

Speculation ... The officer should have noticed this when he removed her from the car, and should have re-handcuffed her hands behind her back as per protocol. He did not do this. Why? Maybe he did not see her as a threat? Maybe he figured they were close enough to the station that it didnt matter?

I've read most of the thread, but I dont know if this has already been posted. I found a longer video on Youtube. She goes unconscious about two minutes after hitting the concrete.

No.. I have never called the police and gotten help.
I have called them twice, and once was with friends that called them.

Once because my friend was assaulted, the cop said if my friend didn't know who the guy was (he ran off) and didn't need to go to the hospital it was "a lot of paper work for me to do since we probably won't catch him" and talked my friend out of filing a report. Another time I called the police about my bass that was stolen and I found in a pawn shop. The pawn shop made me pay back what the woman that stole my bass got for it (even though I had proof it was mine and I wanted to press charges), the cops protect the pawn shop always (they are taken care of first so they aren't victims that lose money), and the cop said they weren't going to look for her, but if she gets brought in on any other charges they would add that to it (meaning no, she won't get in trouble and you will never get your money back). The other case were cops coming to help and end up threatening to take me to jail for simply saying an emt was being a prick. That's it, said they were being a prick and the cop thought I meant him and threatened to take me in.

I have also had cops pull me over and be complete jerks and some flirted with my gf and pull her over for no reason. No I can say for fact none have EVER EVER helped a situation and best case scenario waste your time, worst case scenario make everything worse.
