i've seen this happen on other forums before and it never really goes very well the funny thing is when someone puts a member on "ignore" you'll see the person asking other posters.. what did he say about me?! or obviously unblocking the post to see what's been said and you know it because the blocker will post a reply to the blocked post hehe anyway.. i know it's best to just move on and just try to scroll past anyone who irritates you, letting them know you're bothered empowers them

That is going too far.

You are keeping someone from debating their opinion just because you don't like theirs? That isn't fair or balanced in a discussion form.

Blocking a members post is fine but at least let them post.

There use to be an ignore] feature that was great. It was pretty much like the idea you are suggesting. It would be a great thing to have back.

I agree it could be fun to have at least one chemtrail thread without Proudbird or Aloysius the gaul but they like regurgitate the same stuff over and over. I'm trying to evade their meaningless posts but my eyes still sometimes are fooled into actually reading them.

But I think it would kill freedom of speech and who knows, maybe chemtrails NEVER existed?!?!

Wouldn't it be nice if you got a grip and didn't try to blacklist everyone you deem "Trollish"?

Agreed. Have to give the OP a negative S+F on this one. Are you saying you like censorship if you are the censor?

Dangerous ground and thin ice. Perhaps you had better think about things a little longer before you post a thread.

I hate the trolls too. They don't bathe and their cave always smells like rotting meat, but censorship?

When will we fix the education system in this country?

There was a trend beginning in September of 2009 towards new members using common troll tactics. For a while I only had to look at the join date instead of reading the vitriol.

In late 2010 I noticed a bunch with 2008 dates and suspected abondoned avatars with simple password were being stolen to give trolls more legitimacy. I was chided by a mod for suggesting they cross reference IP addresses to identify moles. Hell, my avatar was hacked last week and I had to get a new password.
i also had to reset my password last week, couldn't log on my password had been changed.by who thats what i want to know and why?regarding the op get a thicker skin,do you really think everyones replies to you should agree and butt lick you?trolls can be fun too!your rant reminds me of all the hurt feelings laws, pathetic.

Note to all Trolls in this thread: Trolling this thread will only confirm you as a Troll, as only a Troll would have something against a PERSONAL Troll-filter being available for those that wanted it. For those that don´t want it, there would be absolutely NO difference!

So Troll on, this thread might be a great place to gather all the ATS-Trolls (from what it looks like so far)

so why make a thread and then moan that eveyone who hates your ideas are troll.are you a troll?you could be as you haven't been here long.or are you a bigot?

I think that's a fabulous idea. Maybe we could get SkepticOverLord to consider allowing/implementing a personal "troll block" as you have suggested or one that the owner of a thread could use. It would probably make reading threads much more enjoyable and less frustrating. Also, it would definitely alleviate so many violations of the T&C's and having points stricken.

On the flip side, I highly doubt that would happen since ATS is a place where we can all donate our opinions no matter how ridiculous or "Trollsome" they may be

Anyway, excellent thought

Sometimes the trolls are quite fun and most entertaining, try not to take them serious if they disagree with you

Sometimes even trolls have a valid point.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" - Evelyn Beatrice Hall (often misidentified as a quote from Voltaire).

What happens if you mark yourself as a troll?

Do you cease to exist, from your own point of view or does the universe turn inside out and you see everything from the other side?

ATS used to have a feature that accomplished exactly what you're describing, Neo.

it was deemed the "ignore" button. they have recently decided to take away this feature...for what purpose? the only thing i can think of is to force members to recognize & acclimate to the trolls' world-view.

why else would we be not allowed to ignore "trolls"? (i know that you know that i know the trolls in question).

if you voluntarily ignore another member, it is in no way a violation of free speech OR censorship. ignoring people of your choosing is perfectly normal behavior.

is it censorship if you ignore the west boro baptist church?

if voluntarily ignoring people is censorship of free speech,,,then EVERYONE must be guilty, as we ALL ignore certain things & people/groups.

do people not skip some TV stations? is that censorship of the station?

do people not think of these simple examples before they "speak" negatively against the OP?

I think I could get behind this it wouldn't be such an awful idea to have a "block" function, but the whole reason I love ATS so much is the arguments people have and my option to join in if I chose to do so.

So if everyone who disliked me blocked me then where would the great debates of this site be held?

you're still pretty new to the board....in time you will meet the trolls and realize that this feature is needed....as it DID exist in the past, the Mods also thought it was needed. why they changed their mind...is a mystery.

the more time you spend here, and the more in depth you go into the "fringe"/"controversial" subject threads....the more you will see.

ATS could consider a thumbs up and down feature like YouTube, maybe. If a post gets to many spam votes it could be "hidden" from view. Stars are nice, but what about the "troll" vote?

BAD IDEA!!!!
The trolls would use it to hide what they dont want you to see.

A suggestion.
The OP should be able to post directly into the replys. This would be a more natural way to view a thread, more like a real conversation. It would also allow the op a better chance to combat the trolls derailing attempts.

I am not talking about people wanting to honestly debate, fighting logic with logic is perfectly fine. Trolls rarely do this however. I could give you some examples but then i would probably be banned for bashing other members, but there are plenty in this thread if you haven´t seen a real troll yet... Link

Although i must admit you have a very valid point there, they want us to argue with Trolls because that makes it more interesting to other people kinda... That may have been why they removed the ignore button. Arguments moves threads forward, and draws crowds?

I really like your idea about OP being able to directly answer in threads... Maybe just with a different color, to make it distinct.

Oh trust me I totally understand what you mean I've had people insult me up and down this place already in any way possible! I guess I just find it amusing because they think they can rile me up when they don't even know me. I guess I just think it's funny that's all. Maybe deep down I'ma trolls troll eh? In any case I can understand why some would want the block function back. I wouldn't want anyone derailing my thread either or any unwelcome guests spout nonsense when you want to talk about a serious topic.

Yep I'd say you nailed it on the head with your last statement, if their were no arguing on this website it would be awfully dull I suppose... I notice how trolls try to check your previous postings and threads so they can try and find some way to insult you lol. I've come across a few trolls on this site already.

I think it would be cool to have a "troll function" where if a person gets enough "troll flags" on their profile they can be labeled an "official troll" on ATS.

What if it's only trolls using the troll flag function on other people?

That's a good point... Hmm... But surely there are more mature individuals on this site than trolls right? So for that to work a troll would have to make 100 ATS accounts and "troll flag" someone 100 times lol sounds like too much trouble to me!
