WANTED: Troll Filter

There was a trend beginning in September of 2009 towards new members using common troll tactics. For a while I only had to look at the join date instead of reading the vitriol.

In late 2010 I noticed a bunch with 2008 dates and suspected abondoned avatars with simple password were being stolen to give trolls more legitimacy. I was chided by a mod for suggesting they cross reference IP addresses to identify moles. Hell, my avatar was hacked last week and I had to get a new password.

So what's up with the '...for a "living"...' in quotes? Surely you aren't suggested there are not paid in currency psyoperatives posting on this site and others?

Of course I would never suggest that there are people who enjoy hiding behind their keyboards for "free".

Fault? Why does it have to be anyones fault? I am talking about having a troll filter as a time saving convenience, not trying to put blame on someone. Guess you missed the plot eh?

I have an "auto-reading" mode switched on usually, reading everything that gets posted. If a troll posts and i see it, my curiosity usually makes me read it, although i often regret that i did afterwards.

There is an easy way to deal with a real troll...alert their posts.

If the mod deems they are trolling, they will remove the post.

If the information the person is presenting is not outright lies, personal attacks, or political partisan tripe...the post will stay and you can rest assured that the person is not a troll.

in every Ron Paul thread, there are a few names that ALWAYS pop up, always regurgitating the same.....

Cold-Fusion(LENR) threads, always the same trolls show up there....

get rid of that troll ONCE AND FOR ALL!

Don't get me wrong, we all need to let out a good rant every now and then, but after it has been let out, then you should actually start looking for a plausible solution. Chances are, nothing will come from this idea of yours.

Do you think the higher-ups of ATS actually go through the Rant Forum, and look for suggestions? Nooo. Maybe occasionally, but if so, I'm sure it is rare.

This Forum is only here to let you (me, everyone, anyone, etc..) just get it out there. Then it will be swept under the rug, and quickly forgotten. That is when you need to begin to look for a solution, for the problem that began the rant, in the first place.



So now you are left with 2 choices:

Sit back, and wait for the installation of the '[color=FF6ED3]Troll-Filter', while continuing to read their nonsensical posts over and over again.
OR

You can just stop reading them.

Oh you took that one personal eh? Considering you choose to retaliate with a personal attack i mean. Does that mean you admit to being a troll?

That's not a personal attack. I've been called everything from shill, to troll to things the censors cut out. It really doesn't matter, nor should it for you.

People are going to think, write, act certain ways online but it doesn't mean it's concrete. People will think you are a troll at times, does it matter?

But the people you are labeling as such, they seem to matter to you. You made a thread about them.

This is a forum for discussion where people will have opposing points of view. Your "outline" or "definition" of a troll in your OP however, seems like you just label people who disagree with you. Or people who don't think the same way.

There is a big difference.

I'm wondering if we are forgetting what trolling means.

As I understand it trolling is a deliberate attempt to derail a discussion by somebody who tends to rudeness etc.

Now if we are expanding the meaning of trolling as those that don't have the same opinion as we do, then we are moving into very dangerous territory. It is quite healthy to have / hear differing opinions, sometimes we might decide that somebody else's opinon is correct, even if its against what you believe.

I don't like the idea of a Amen corner with everybody high fiving and backslapping each other. That kind of forum moves people away from reality.

Nice comparison. Except NDAA makes people disappear for everyone (except the military). It is also a slight disconvenience to the subject. This troll-blocker would not make anyone disappear, you would just be spared seeing them personally. Also it would be of no consequence to the troll, since he would never know who blocked him (but he could suspect)

We have the free will to post, enlighten, and even troll if we desire too. Who are you to judge and deem so called users "trolls" and block their free speech from the system? Whatever their intentions are, they should be for the greatest good. You are not the god of the multiverse, but a children to him as everyone else is.

Step off of the arrogant podium, and try next time feeling out what the troll is saying, instead of over analyzing and over thinking like the ego wants you too.

Note to all Trolls in this thread: Trolling this thread will only confirm you as a Troll, as only a Troll would have something against a PERSONAL Troll-filter being available for those that wanted it. For those that don´t want it, there would be absolutely NO difference!

Why would you want to censor anyone though. Trolls CAN have good points too or teach you how to debate better

Public forums are no place to expect your world view to be sheltered. Because that's all OP is truly asking for, for his views and beliefs to be sheltered from any form of debate or ridicule. The whole purpose of these forums is to foster debate and information exchange.

If you don't like what other people have to say then ignore it, or be secure enough in your views and beliefs to back them up. If you can't handle parsing information as to the content of post and lose a few seconds of your time that's your own problem.

The only product of such a sheltered system is a collection of the deaf and dumb, convictions can often be more insidious enemies of truth than lies.

I think the trolls have something to teach us. Like, how uncool it is to be a troll. Then again, truth-bombing, like on you-tube when there is a vid that is obvious dis-info.....that technically is trolling, but, I think trolling can mean different things depending on your perspective...

Grow up, you don't have the right to choose whom you interact with on the internet. Trolls, pedophiles, and many other people share this tool of instantaneous learning, so turn the other cheek and start sharing it with mutual respect.
