Apparently, Al Gore, the PResident of Iceland, and a whole host of billionaires, reps, and dignitaries are currently in Antarctica. No joke.

Combine that with the Russians gone missing:

www.foxnews.com...

...The joint U.S.-Russia inspection mission:

And we got ourselves material for a genuine conspiracy here.

Taking the Piri Reis map into account, I would say its more probable that the ice over the antartic continent is not that old. Maybe is only 12,000 years old. There are some signs pointing that the Earth axis changed not so long ago, like the alignment marks in Tiahuanaco. Its a good possibility.

So, if russians find a different gas composition it may point to this hypothesis.

From the articles it states that once they have reached the lake the water will then fill the hole upwards and they will let it re-freeze for this winter then they come back next year to get it and study it.

Correct me if I'm wrong...that's not to say something will/won't happen during this expedition.

I have no idea......it's all definitely interesting though.

No body has mentioned the worst case scenario. Bringing back Brendan Fraser the link.

It would be interesting to see what is near the shores of the buried lake. I would assume that is where you might find Most animals, housing, flying cars, strip clubs with levitating poles, and possibly humans fossil remains. That could explain some of the information from being withheld.

I know for sure at least the american bases down there have internet access... slow via satellite connection, but they do have 'outside world' access... Not sure about the russian bases though... although i do know they like to use old soviet era tanks for transportation.... How fun could that be ?

I do hope those guys are alright and just too busy to answer their radio, as highly unlikely as it is unfortunately...

Oh, and on one other note.... Kerosine to stop the hole from freezing???! Are you kidding me?! thats just crazyness

Just another thought; What is the space weather been like for the last 5 days or so? any solar storms? CME's? Just thinking something like that could take out comms down there fairly easily with the lack of the magnetosphere and whatnot.... Just a thought...

While I'm pretty excited to see what they'll find, if they care to tell us the details, I'm pretty worried about the contamination that could happen. I mean this lake hasn't been touched for millions of years. Who knows what lifeforms are down there could die within hours.
I'm also thinking that we'll be finding some fossils of animals that we may have never seen.

I've been semi-excited but very worried about this...

Those f**king Russians better not screw this up... I swear... they're so cavalier and stupid trying to one-up Americans... but this is SCIENCE, it's not about ANYBODY'S country, it's bigger than that.

Perhaps we need to start a huge campaign to stop this and promote a meeting/consensus amongst scientists about the best course of action for drilling into Vostok??

I think it's too late to start anything to tell them to stop! They've been on the verge of this for a while now, and last anyone heard from them they were only 40 miles from breaking through! They are in Antarctica, you can't just call them up, or start on online petition to tell them to stop!

I think they have already broke through and found something, I just hope that something .... isn't The Thing!!!!

FEET not MILES

Lovecraft comes to mind with this. Rumor has it that the NSA is somehow involved?? Anything could be down there, endless possibilities.

I don't speak Russian but I GoogleRussian. So out of curiosity and to see what the Russian news site are reporting I did the following. I would have looked up some more links but its almost 2am here so way past my bed time. So just in case you are interested to do as well but not sure how to I provided the steps. I'm sure there is a better way but :

1. Goto translate.google.com...
put in your keyword in english
"missing scientist vostok Antarctica" to "отсутствует ученый восток Антарктиды" in Russian.

2. Goto Russian google news site: news.google.ru...

3. put your Russian keywords and search

4. Click on of the links for example and copy the actual url :
for example: expert.ru...

5. Then go to translate.google.com...

6. overwrite the link that says "http://putthelinkhere/" with yours from step 4.

example result which contains some information about the mission not current though
translate.google.com...

Weird!
Right in these days.... Something is moving in ANTARTICA....

Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, the President of Iceland, is in Antarctica with Al Gore and a host of scientists. The exploration also includes director James Cameron, and billionaires Richard Branson and Ted Turner.

I would have expected them to go to the Denver Airport instead of Antarctica, but would be really interesting if they all the suddenly showed up at DIA.

Pretty cool stuff but I think the Russians might try to up one US and claim first rights on this.

Ok, so I did a little research and it looks as though the drilling team disapeared somtime today due to unknown cicmstances. They were due to reach the lake within a few hours or so I heard? Anyway, maybe somthing happened there, because no one can get in contact at all.
