Just pondering wouldn't any organisms/life in the lake,be dead - being covered in a sheet of ice for some 10-20 million years - wouldn't they need oxygen in order to survive? Is it a dead lake?

Your fear is absolutely correct.

Why?

In regards to your avatar...Are you wearing the symbol on your hat proudly for all to see based on the events in the 20th century or are you wearing it proudly in support of what it actually signified before then when it was presented by cultures past in a completely different light and a different meaning.

Life can exist without oxygen, especially if there are vents in the lake. At any rate, there can be life down there we have never seen anything close to. Things we have no basis to compare against.

My concern is the amount of pressure below the ice and how much oxygen/nitrogen is actually trapped within this lake. How confident are they that that amount of pressure won't actually overtake the freezing of the water released? What if there is enough oxygen down there to significantly change our weather patterns? It all sounds very dangerous and I doubt that it is going to turn out well.

Think of it like a bio-dome that has been untouched for longer than modern humans have existed. Many scientists think the enclosed environment is rich with oxygen which is why it's such a desired discovery. It's like visiting another world that might contain life yet it exists here and not on another world. It's very fascinating indeed...our greatest fantasies often times are bound by our greatest fears which are induced by great risks. Only time will tell.

Dude, pretty sure it's the logo for skateboard company "independant". Could be a conspiracy there.

Back on topic - this discovery could go either way, the fact that the Russians are "missing" is a little disturbing.
Here's hoping they've just left the phone off the hook.

What if there is actually intelligent life down there and their first exposure to humans ends up being contamination? Can't imagine that turning out very well...

This is how horror movies start off....... Some expedition into the remote unknown. The scientists/engineers believe they are about to make some grand discovery, and then before you know it they are releasing some blood sucking creature that cant be contained......

I hope I'm wrong...

So this is where we go into the next ice age once they open that pandoras box???

I hope they don't open Earth's version of Pandoras Box and unleash something that should have not been let out.

Well put.
The material I came across a few months ago while researching this for my own curiosity suggested a rather massive "air dome" over the water. One other member posted a link to a report talking about it from a number of years ago. A lot of the graphics don't allow for it, but the text type stuff I read indicated it more often than not between sources. I guess they will find out when the last bit of ice is clear and they can sample what's actually below.

This will be the first truly *NEW* and undiscovered feature I can think of having been found in recent history. It's extremely exciting and I sure hope censoring of the details off the ice doesn't block the major discoveries.

I think its safe to say any object/creature found will be round and beachball like due to the conditions etc.How would they view it must be pitch black down there.

A photograph of the soul is giving too much and too little...It will be the coldest area to find water life too?

This doesn't look good at all:

www.foxnews.com...

A group of Russian scientists plumbing the frozen Antarctic in search of a lake buried in ice for tens of millions of years have failed to respond to increasingly anxious U.S. colleagues -- and as the days creep by, the fate of the team remains unknown.

"No word from the ice for 5 days," Dr. John Priscu professor of Ecology at Montana State University, told FoxNews.com via email.

I'm very concerned about the fate of scientists and what is the main factor in their failure to respond!

any one in this thread consider they have already broken through years ago. the technology for steam drilling was used to recover a group of p38 lightnings from a glacier in greenland in the mid 90ies. history channel did a 2 hour special on the recovery of the p38s. so IMO they r already down there with pick axe, assault riffles
