The sun is going to throw a wobbler and damage electronics and communications. No back ups are in place, and as everything is on computers these days the world will become like mad max.

Not so sure about that but if indeed the earths magnetic field is weakening, solar flares would not only ruin electronics which i think wouldnt be such a bad thing, there would be the possibility of the earth being cooked with us on it.

I do not believe that some great massive thing is going to destroy the world. I prefer to think either nothing will happen or that we are shifting to a better consciousness.

I second that motion. We are, as a species, evolving/growing into a new consciousness. I believe the Mayan elders are the most reliable source in terms of getting their ancient calendar; perhaps the space issues with the earth cause that paradigm shift to be available to everyone, not just the few now...call them whatever, enlightened, Indigo, starchildren, new-agers, aquarians, ..... who ponder outside the mainstream box regarding the metaphysical and esoteric enigmas and mysteries.

OTOH, my husband and I have had some good laughs imagining the ETs coming down, again, and saying, "Look! People, we've been here before, and you just don't pay attention! Here is the RESET BUTTON. Okay? Got it?
" and then poof, back they'll go to wherever they hang out while we flounder down here like newbs.

(actually, I have drafted an outline and character sketches and a few scenes that have spun off of this idea which amuse me a great deal....but you'll have to wait til the book or movie comes out .
...)

Peace, everybody. Worry gets you nowhere. Just prepare as best you can to be self-sufficient, without big business, utility companies, grocers, etc being conveniently available for you. Look at the survival forum...lots of good stuff there!

Meanwhile, tell your loved ones you love them. Spend time with them, or drop them a note or text msg or email to let them know you love them and are thinking of them.

And treat other people the way you yourself would like to be treated.

(Or, if you're angry at yourself and/or know or feel you deserve punishment or negative consequences, whether for real or imagined infractions, think of how you'd like your dearest loved one to be treated, and focus on cleaning up your act...you who are guilty know who you are...and you who are laboring under the impression that you are a no-hoper and ne'er-do-well because someone else tells you that to control you....find new friends.)

I personally think the entire Mayan Calendar thing is rubbish. However, I do believe there is money to be made from it, and I am thinking of ways I can cash in.

I remember one of the best deals I'd heard of was before the latest total solar eclipse a few years ago; one genius was selling "dog sunglasses" via mail to protect your pooch's eyes during the eclipse. I understand that he made a pretty penny, too.

I'd like a side of hash browns with that.

Also, does hell have to be scrambled, or can I get it over easy?

My young son told me last night that 2012 end of the world is not going to happen. He has proof that it isn't going to happen. His proof is that he saw a soda can with the expiration date of 2013. So there you are folks, according to my son since Coke is going to be around till 2013, so are we.

For those who have not seen it here is Michio Kaku on the solar activity and the potential damage it could do.

There are multiple correlations regarding the start of the 14th baktun. The popular GMT correlation places it on December 21, 2012. The slightly less popular GMT+2 correlation places it on December 23, 2012. Then there are a number of more obscure correlations that no one outside the field discuss. As for the "Mayan calendar" coming from the Toltec, that's debatable. While it is speculated that the Long Count (and only the Long Count) has its origins with the Toltec no proof has ever emerged to verify this.

As for your claims regarding the Maya and astronomy, it's just plain wrong. While your claims regarding the fifth sun do have a basis in the Popol Vuh one needs to simply look at history and the geological record to see that no such catastrophes occurred. Furthermore, each "sun" only lasts 13 baktun, which is the equivalent of about 5,000 years. So, if we are presently coming to the end of the fourth sun that only accounts for 20,000 years. What about the other 80,000 years that humans have existed or the 4 billion and some odd years that the Earth has existed? It is also worth pointing out that the Popol Vuh was heavily influenced by Christian missionaries and is seemingly contradicted by Classic period monuments such as Coba Stela 1. They Maya's knowledge of the solar system was also extremely lacking compared to modern day knowledge. They were aware of the naked-eye planets and that's about it. There is no indication that they were aware of the precession of the equinoxes or even the fact that it takes the Earth slightly longer than an even 365 days to orbit the Sun. While they were masters of naked-eye astronomy their knowledge of celestial mechanics were certainly lacking and they definitely did not know of any planets that could not be seen unaided.

First off this is based on out of date information. Since 2009 forecasts for the solar maximum have pushed it back to spring 2013 and predict that it will be the least active solar maximum in recent memory. Also, this is something that has been bothering me. Kaku's specialty is in theoretical physics. So, why do we keep treating him as the authority in heliophysics, astrobiology, and the like? If I'm suffering from epilepsy I'm not going to go be diagnosed by a dermatologist even though both them and a neurologist went to med school.

Also I had fist hand experience last summer of just how dependent we are on the phone system. A mile of cable was stolen from just outside my village by Gypo's and the telephones and internet was out for 2 weeks. The local co-op quickly ran out of food because all stock and deliveries rely on the computer sytem.Only after a week was an emergency phone line installed so they could reorder stock.Cash machines did not work and nobody could pay with credit or debit cards. Now imagine that on a global scale and you get the idea of how bad it could get.

Well he is the guy they put on tv to talk about it so they think he must know something.

Also if the information was from 2009 and out of date why is he repeating it in august 2010?

Michio is an absolute media whore. He loves the camera and assumes it is reciprocal.

He veers dangerously close to conspiracy-minded, fear-mongerer in my book.

Each to his own, I like Michio and he did build a particle accelerator in his moms garage when he was 13, which is cool.

The earths electro magnetic field is weakening. This we know. The sun is entering a period of what is believed to be a hightened state of activity. This we will find out. If the sun discharges a mass coronal ejection large enough our magnetic field will not offer us safe refuge. Unclear if it would cook us or not. If however it does get through kiss our entire electrical grid goobye. In fact kiss any electrical device thats on at the time of the event goodbye. Now the real question becomes, What happens to society when we have no fuel, no food, no resources of any kind that need electricity to reach us? I feel it collapses. Arm up. be ready cuz hell may be coming to breakfst.

This, is true, but I will add that their is a plasma type cloud that is compressing the heliosphere as well. It is an interstellar cloud (thoughts are that these clouds are remnants of supernovas). This compression of the heliosphere causes an increase in cosmic rays which effects the atmosphere, biology and other systems of earth, including changes in evolution.

There are other effects of these plasma clouds as well, especially if they penetrate the helosphere, which has become an extremely high probability. These areas of plasma that have entered the solar system are dense columns of plasma. All of this results in increased energy in-system as seen in Hoagland's work, The Day After Tomorrow, though Hoagland and Wilcock have missed the actual CAUSE of the increased energy, which is the interstellar cloud.

There are many changes that come with entrance and exits of our solar system through these interstellar clouds (they are cyclical), and one of the most dramatic changes could take place in the consciousness of human beings.

It takes 6-8 months to make just one transformer that exist in the larger cities like New York and LA. And that's if you have power to run the plants that make the metal and coils and rubber and wires, etc. Not to mention transporting the behemoths.

It's impossible to say if the magnetic field is undergoing any unusual changes. We've been measuring it for less than 200 years. Furthermore, the solar maximum is not predicted to begin until next spring and even then it will most likely be the least active solar maximum in recent memory. It is also worth noting that most experts believe that if a Carrington-type event occurred power would only be lost for a few days.

    That is almost 100% untrue.

I have thought about this, too. If something does happen and we survive whatever it is, how bad will the aftermath be? Looting, rioting, killing for food and water. Yes, hell will be coming to steal my breakfast. Lol.

No emergency response, no doctors, no hospitals, no police, no medicines except for what is in your medicine cabinet in the bathroom. No refrigeration, no antibiotics, no diabetes meds. No ambulances, no cell phones, no computer, no tv, no radio (except ham), no warning. Actually, there is only a window of about 3-4 hours before the general population could possibly be warned. Governments and leaders could be warned about 8-10 hours prior. That's it.
