Oh heck yes,

a lot can happen "in thousand years".

Imagine they can have all kinds of space stations which syphon the gases (or mine asteroids etc,)...and then simply sending those ships back to Earth, into orbit where it can be collected. This is VERY reasonable to think about and not too far off, IMO.

Great idea, But i think by the time we could even concider this a posibility our race would most likely be past the need for a combustable fuel source.

Not crazy at all...I've thought for some time now that some day we will realize what the other planets can be used for. Personally I thought we somday would "ignite" Jupitor...for what ever reason.

Jupiter has 64 confirmed moons... hmm, good places for colonies. one way trip. but what if they are taken already

HAPPY NEW YEAR

If we can get there and have an energy source, we have no need for the sun.

You say that as if any advanced enough civilization wouldnt take advantage of the resources provided in their solar system? Is there anything more wasteful than not using what has been provided to us for free?

Also, whats wrong with using the resources of a dead planet?

what about breaking Jupiter and Saturn and the other planets up, and making a Dyson sphere?

Wow I just finished a fiction book called Pandoras Star where we see an alien race make that.
Great read cheers dude.

Good read too www.peterfhamilton.co.uk...

I Agree, but I mean its not like the sun is going any where any time soon. I guess another question is will Jupiter out live the sun? If so, that planet and its moons should be in great consideration, given we haven't developed interstellar travel as a norm by then

jupiter is among the top 2 reasons we have this solar system, without it we'd either get flung into the sun and if we're lucky flung into emptyness

+ energy will be free in the future, if not then i dont think we moved into the future

The idea keeps popping up in sci-fi. Even the awesome TOHO films did a version of this idea. And that's where my user name comes from.

www.dvdtalk.com...

Set in the year 2125, when space travel and colonization within the solar system is commonplace, Dr. Eiji Honda (Tomokazu Miura) - the character apparently so named in honor both Tsuburaya and director Ishiro Honda - is a scientist working on a project to transform Jupiter into a "second sun," and thus provide energy for colonies established on the outer planets. Plans for this are opposed by a radical religious cult (founded by a bearded former pop star), who repeatedly attempt to sabotage Honda's efforts aboard Minerva, a series of research vessels orbiting Jupiter.

hopefully we will sort our act out but the way things are going this seems hard, before we are able too do this we also need too master space travel and make some kind of extraction machine,in hinesight this is a great ide however we should also think about how we can make it possible

I highly highly doubt we would ever tape it, and especial not with a pipe line lol

Its a great idea for now, but technology will develop way before we ever get our act together a be one so to speak, IE NWO,

I think by that time we will be using technology such as zero point energy (anti-gravity) which is alot more efficient & plentiful, we will no doubt one day terraform Mars & mine planets in our solar system for gold & oil, i still think there will be a demand for oil once our technology is based on free energy tech as we need it for all sorts of products and maybe the super rich will still own a few vintage cars /toys

There's something better at Jupiter. There is a huge electron stream around it. Tap that.

We would have to advance to the level of a class-2 civilization for us to be able to do that.Presently we are not even a class-1 yet, which is a civilization that can maintain and control the energy output of its own planet.Your dream may have been a premonition of things to come in the far off distant future of humanity.Or you were semi-consciously remote viewing the type of civilization we once were and the level of technology we once had a long time ago, before the last time we mostly destroyed ourselves, which is something i believe we have done to again and again through the forgotten ages > www.abovetopsecret.com...

if we could not carve out big chunks of frozen methane from our outer solar spinning neighbors and ship it back closer to homeworld then maybe we could turn jupiter into the universes largest helium laser and kill ourselves and everything with that.

Sure, why not.

Also a great place to fill up your party balloons.

However with mankinds track record it will be a few millenia (if ever) that we are ever "topping off" at Jupiter.

Ok I know this sounds a little out there but Jupiter is mostly made from hydrogen and helium, and those can be used as fuel, so maybe one day we can syphon the gas from the planet and use it for fuel, either here on earth or on moon bases etc.
Possible? not yet but could it happen?

Think of it as a giant off shore oil platform in space drilling for gas.

It came to me in a dream and I thought wow good Idea.

I think it is a great idea, but then, being a Sagittarius, Jupiter is my ruling planet, and, from the size, the God of all the other planets. I tease my son about this all the time, he is a Scorpio, his ruling planet is little Pluto. Of course there are armchair math professors in here that will tell you Hydrogen cannot be used as fuel.

I have read and heard that jupiter almost became a star, but it was'nt large enough,so jupiter is a failed star.
