If Jupiter did become a sun it would be like Tattooine

We need to do it someone find a way and I will give you a star.....Lol get it.

hey, that is what happened in "2001 : A Space Odyssey". From the early Arthur C. Clarke stories, he was fascinated by Jupiter. Don't know if you know his books, but you might find it very interesting

its a great idea but we would need to advance tech wise quite a bit. especially protection from radiation and wot not

As I said, if Jupiter grew 600%, things would change. As a star at it's mass, nothing would change except brightness, and you might even see it in the daytime. It is over 4 and a third times further away than the sun at it's closest, and less than 1% of the sun's mass. As a star it might clean up the main asteroid belt a bit. The entire main asteroid belt collectively doesn't even have the combined mass of our moon. As Arthur C. Clark dreamed, it would be glorious!

Ok I know this sounds a little out there but Jupiter is mostly made from hydrogen and helium, and those can be used as fuel, so maybe one day we can syphon the gas from the planet and use it for fuel, either here on earth or on moon bases etc.
Possible? not yet but could it happen?

Think of it as a giant off shore oil platform in space drilling for gas.

It came to me in a dream and I thought wow good Idea.

By the time we would have the tech to be able to do that, we wouldn't even need fuel.

We would be Beyond fuel.

Wasn't it another great Sci-Fi writer, Jerry Pournelle that wrote that if our generation doesn't take the steps to go into outer space, no generation afterward will ever, because we would have used up all the resources Earth can give us?

Nasa has been trying to figure out how to do that for a while now, actually.

One concept of a probe has it consuming the fuel from the gas giant, and then going about its business in the neighborhood. Same with Saturn.

In fact, video games have been made about it to some degree. Ever play dead space?

true, 2001 lead on to 2010. Can't believe that I made that mistake, grrrr
it was in 2010 that Jupiter ignited

Interesting idea, reminds me of the bogus story of the ET mining craft that harvest in the rings of Saturn.

This is also a very similar plot in, "Saga of the Seven Suns" written by Kevin J. Anderson. I believe he also wrote some Star Wars based work as well, but I have only read the Saga series.

And just how would you propose we syphon of materials from Jupiter? You do know Jupiter has the mass of 1000 earths right? The gravity would squash you before you even got close to the atmosphere. We'd be better off leaving Jupiter alone anyways it catches alot of giant asteroids and comets that could put the earth into one hell of a pickle by exterminating all life on the planet.

Yes, my uncle nearly died from wot not exposure!
Large bodies emitting gas can be very hazardous.

Anyhoo monkeyboy74, its a Bespin concept but free energy would be anathema to mankind's greed. The rest of the galaxy doesn't know how lucky it is that we (Humans) are too busy fighting and destroying our own habitat that we may never leave this planet in large numbers.

Love your avatar btw, watched Monkey as a kid on the BBC (in 1979) hadn't a clue what was going on (who did?) but loved the characters and the sheer anarchic energy of it. Saw it again a few years ago while understanding the mythology and Taoist/Bhuddist themes underlying it and fell in love with it all over again.
Thanks for bringing back the memories. I was unaware of a remake and I'd probably regret finding it due to the uniqueness of the original. Cheers, give my best to Piggsy and Sandy.

Ever heard of James Lloyd? I used to hear him on shortwave radio. He has this theory that the satellite we sent to Saturn may some day be used to ignite that planet.

In this 2 minute 14 second clip from February 15, 2005, James Lloyd intimates that (all laws of nuclear physics aside) the planet Saturn will be "ignited" and become a "new sun". "We're going to tell you more when we come back" so break out your tinfoil hats and stay tuned for more! Not mind control?

Nice. That was the exact plot from the movie "2010" the year we make contact;( the sequel to to Clarkes 2001a space odyssey)..The"monolith" found in Jupiters orbit ( by David Bowman and discovery) self replicates multiplying to the point the mass of Jupiter ignites in a fusion reaction creating a second sun for us. and light and warmth for life forming on Europa...

Shouldn't this thread be in the fiction book/movie forum by now?

Nobody seems to be interested in reality and physics.

Maybe we start a 'What if, and Therefore' forum?

Like that tanning guy on the History channel.

With that hair do.

He laughs at you

all the way to the bank.

After watching Apollo 18 and reading the website that brought the movie about, I don't think we want to go out there.

Well then I think someone owes James some royalties because that audio is from 2005.

Why not go after brown dwarf stars, the mass is more concentrated there, the effort would be more efficient.

Would it be a good idea pumping all those gases into our atmosphere?
