CHP plans 24-hour crackdown on drivers using cellphones

www.sacbee.com

Cellphone talkers and texters, beware. California Highway Patrol officers around Sacramento have special marching orders on Friday and Saturday:
Find you and ticket you.
"If someone is driving distracted, we want officers to issue citations," said CHP spokesman Adrian Quintero.
Also on Friday, plainclothes officers and volunteers with clipboards will be stationed on foot at several major intersections around Sacramento, peering into passing car windows and noting the types of distracted

Weren't they already looking into windows to view people talking on cellphones?
How else would they know?
Im tired of having to drive along side of drivers who are on the phone. They cross over center lines, run red lights...sometimes It looks like (no kidding)
they are looking down??
How the hel! do you drive looking down?

If it's a cellphone crackdown why do they keep using the term "distracted drivers"?

They'll be peering into windows looking for types of "distracted driving"?

Further highlighting the stupid redundancy of distraction specific laws.

Distracted or reckless driving is already a crime. It was long before the invention of cell phones.

So why waste money and time on cell phone specific legislation that apparently doesnt get enforced regularly anyway or they wouldnt be making a big deal with this "for 24 hours we'll actually be doing our job" day.

Sad but I don't doubt that at all. It's older people too...not just the young .
Thier heads are all twisted side ways???
Every day that I step out to pick up lunch I see atleats one person run thru a red light while on the phone.
And unless have eyes in an unusual location there is no way they can be getting a decent look out the windows.

This is actually my home city and while I understand that this is being done in the name of public safety, I do not think this is enforceable in the long term. You can't force someone to not drive recklessly, you just bust them when they do. Hopefully, before it's too late.

I too cannot count the number of people I have seen driving while on their phones or texting. And it's worse on the freeways! I have been guilty of this too (mostly texting while driving) but it simply cannot be enforced.

Thanks for the warning, I will make sure not to text and drive today. Perhaps I should read the local news more often....

This really interests me. So the potential result of being ticketed is more of a deterrent to you than dying or killing someone else?

Would you read a book while driving? Work on a jigsaw puzzle or crossword? Just stare at your crotch for a few seconds at a time?

If a ticket is more threatening than death than I really have to rework my opinion of the human race.

It doesnt seem physically possible to be unless you are on some type of spring?

Actually, I never stated that the threat of a ticket was worse than the thought of killing someone or being killed. I've actually never been in an accident or caused one so maybe I feel like I'm above the law. But you are correct, in that the threat of killing another should BE the deterrent. And for the most part, it is.

Please don't spend too much time questioning the civility of the human race. You might get heartburn.

Peace!

Well they can look to my home town as almost everyone uses cellphones heck I almost got hit by a woman who was talking on her phone. I saw that she was looking at the road but seemed to be going rather fast it was on my college campus and she looked to be around 35 or so. Not sure if she was in a rush or just didn't know how fast she was going. Though this isn't to say that all people on cell phones drive fast as I do it often times to; but I try my best to keep at least 80% of my concentration on the road especially when moving through a school zone.

Not sure how they'd handle this unless they penalize people that keep making offenses while on cell phones or something? Another thing is this any usage of cell phone or just those who text? Quite frankly texting is the main problem talking not so much but then you get the one person as I mentioned in my example who can cause problems. Cell phones are good but it just seems people get so wrapped up in them.

Well said. I take public trans sometimes & almost everyone is heads down staring
at a screen, texting away. It's spooky sometimes like they're complete zombies. I'm
getting old I guess, but I remember not so long ago we didn't have cell phones & we
got on just fine & it's just wrong that people are so self-centered they would risk their
own life & someone else's over who's coming over tonight or who broke up with who.

If you are using your mobile phone and driving you are 4 times more likely to crash

www.direct.gov.uk...

here in the UK it has been against the law to do so and rightly so, but I still see people do it....

Yeah it's like they are zombies pretty much even on the college campus I almost bump into people because they are wobbling while texting. My friend got sent this and sent it to me at first I kind of laughed at it but now after reading this and thinking on it I really don't know what to say about it all. This is all from twitter and after Christmas.
