A large blast has occured outside the gates of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, the blast has killed seven people and wounded many more. The blast was so powerful it shattered windows for 15 floors in surrounding office buildings.

All Australian staff from the embassy have been accounted for, some with minor injuries. Meaning that once again the death toll in this attack is made up of Indonesian citizens, some guards who worked for the embassy. Others were just those who happened to be passing by on the street.

It appears that the threat of terrorism to Americans and others abroad shows no sign of letting up. Is there anywhere in the world terrorists won't strike?

UPDATE: 5:30 a.m. CST - Reports of 6 dead, 99 wounded at this time.

I am sitting here watching this on tv,
it appears to have been thwarted by some one.
If it had made it into the grounds, the building would have been levelled.

As it is, windows everywhere were shredded,
but it appears casualty numbers will be pedestrians and occupants of nearby buldings where windows were hammered out by the blast..

The rewards of Bush's warmongering and Kerry's continuance
put all of us at risk here, My colleague (Australian) was 300 meters from there,
but I cannot get him on phone yet.

This was the Australian embassy, the flag still flies.

Don't worry, it's only coincidence that the rate of terror incidents worldwide is growing as we draw close to the US election.

There are too many coincidences with all the terrorism since 9/11...

After so many coincidences, they aren't coincidences anymore.

We heard the blast here at home, nearly 6 kilometers away.

It was a tremendous explosion.

I imagine anyone nearby ground zero is probably deaf,
at least for today.

It looks like the vehicle detonated trying to breech the fence.

Pictures now in the hospital and there are many victims who
 appear near death.

The first fatalities numbers are low,
but it appears some people may have been vaporized.

Victims appearing on tv have burns and many were shredded by glass.

These bombers apparently targeted Indonesians seeking visas.
The victims appear almost all Indonesian.

I've just seen the latest on ABC Australia. The car bomb was detonated outside the Ausyralian Embassy killing 6-8 people. No Australians have been reported killed. We only upgraded security last month.

To give them their due respect,
it appears that local Indonesian guards
seemed to have been approaching the bomb vehicle as the pictures
are now showing there to be 10-15 guards and police severely injured.

There are truly horrific images of victims being pulled out,
they are finding bodies everywhere.

All Indonesians

all australian embassy staff have been accounted for according to sky news australia, they just showed footage of a police officer putting a yellow tarp down over what looked to be a body(couldnt really tell since the angle was from above and seemed to be atleat 150meters away.

Ordinarily there is a large queue of Indonesians at that time of the morning
seeking visas. All expatriates would have been busy inside.
There would have been anywhere from 100-200 pedestrians,
street vendors, passers-by and others in the blast site.
Some of the bodies on motorcycles have not yet been leared away.

Observing what appeared to be flaming residue on a tree,
this probably had some exotic additives to assist combustion.

Judging by the nimbers of security guards and police among the dead and injured,
somebody must have determined something was wrong,

We just saw a head being arried away in an evidence bag.

The amount of glass blown out is staggering.

First word out is that this bomb was four times more powerful
than the bomb used against the J.W. Marriott on 2003 August 05

"Don't worry, it's only coincidence that the rate of terror incidents worldwide is growing as we draw close to the US election."

It has nothing to do with U.S elections. Australia goes to the polls next Month.

This is what the bbc news have to say on this matter I also added link at the bottom.

BBC News
Witnesses and reporters say they saw at least three bodies lying lifeless after the blast, which happened at about 1030 local time (0330 GMT).

Mr Howard told a news conference in Melbourne "the number of fatalities could be six. We can not at this stage be certain, but the evidence today indicates that it was a car bomb."

Local radio reports scores injured.

Our correspondent says there has been no word from Indonesian authorities on the blast yet, but the assumption is that it was a bomb.

I just heard a report where they said the bomb consisted of 2kg of plastique. Surely it would have had to have been more than this to cause so much damage. Any demolition experts on ATS who could elaborate on this ?

This was a big bomb, not a small packet.
It appears to have been a vehicle pulled up on the sidewalk
or trying to breech the security wall.

The sound here, 6 km away was a sharp concussion.

The windows were shredded out of many buildings over a blast diameter of
 at least 500 meters.

First numbers on the local news tv here is over 100 medical cases,
and there are many more not yet out of the surounding buildings.

Extremist Muslims have been causing problems longer than the United States has existed as a nation. The problem has increased partly due to tremendous growth in Islam's influence in the world, partly because of advances of technology that provide more targets and present more options for attack, and partly because of Western military campaigns that have been taking place there for centuries (involving more countries than just the U.S.).

I don't necessarily agree with the idea that a "war on terror" can be won. Terrorism has always been around and most likely always will be, in one form or another. Regardless, I really don't think that this "war on terror" has made the situation any worse, not directly at least. At most it's sped up an unavoidable (and seemingly timeless) confrontation.

Muslims clerics must be tired of condeming terrorism.
Why don't they just admit it islam is the cause.

Islam is not the cause. If Islam was not used by Osama and his cronies then the US government would have no excuse to take over Iraq and get the oil. The US people should be thankful that Islam has been able to be used to obtain more resources.
