Well, let's see...swiss cheese or "what really happened" as told by goverment paid experts. Its so confusing...fireworks or they thought it was a lake...or they flew into buildings or....I don't know there is just so many what really happeneds to choose from. I think I'll be opened minded and research the possibilites. I like swiss cheese a lot more than that stuff the "experts" spoon feed us. It's hard to swallow! =D

Ugh I think I am about to give up on the internet.. Trying to educate half the people that see ONE little event like this and then trying to explain to them why the end of the world isn't coming because some birds died is like trying to teach a fish to climb a tree.

Yes pole shifts happen, but over hundreds of thousands of years, are we near one? Not hardly, last I checked (today) My gps in my phone got me to where I was going just fine. and the compass on my knife still points north.
If a pole shift happens within a matter of minutes like some say..then we'll go throw out half of the science text books on the earth and the magnetic field surrounding it.

There should be a special place for doomsayers on the net that don't bother to put up a disclaimer saying "I have no scientific background in this subject, only what I learned from a pseudo-scientist website"

Sorry to nit-pick, but birds don't commit suicide. Thats a voluntary action that the being doing it knows will result in their death. These are accidents. The causes are the mystery - but it could just be that they got confused.

Don't forget the reason these things appear to be increasing is not necessarily that they are, but with the internet things get spread around the world quickly so news finds you when perhaps in the past it might not.

I live in Utah, and I LOVE animals and cried over this sad sad news yesterday........but the OP's info is WRONG and they are making much out of this wrong info.

In fact, I think this little duck is endangered and I doubt there are even ten of thousands of this duck on the planet....I know its illegal to hunt them in Wisconsin, and I think here in Utah also......

HA! Okay, all ATSers here who feel complete and utter trust in what the "authorities" tell us raise your hands.

This is my opinion I think the magnetic poles are flipping in which is confusing the birds but with the sun's up beat activity throwing the solar flares it disrupts the earths magnetic field even more which is why the birds can't even fly north. Plus all our technology might have some effect also. Peace out..

Regarding a pole shift, if that were indeed the case, then it would be fair to expect a more global case as opposed to this more localised incident. It has been proven that birds do contain a substance called 'magnetite' within various bits of tissue within their skull which among other things assits with their navigation. It is worth noting that such incidents are often a precursor to some form of geophyscial event.

Also the breed of bird, a Eared Crebe is an extremely aquatic bird and within its behavioural traits has been shown to escape danger by diving into water as opposed to flying away.

Now if we look at the time of the incident, the location and the number of injured / dead birds, the first thing i would deduce is that the area affected was within a specific location, I would base this assumption on the lack of evidence which would suggest that no other events of this nautre happened within a 24 hr window.

I would then look at the type of bird, its behavioural characteristics and use this to try and understand why they did what they did. Well having done this it would seem extremely unusual for them to behave in this way and make such a glaring error, however as mentioned earlier, one of their behavioural traits is that they prefer to dive into water to escape danger.

The third thing i would be looking for would be any localised or regional geophyscial events which could have affected the magnetitie within their skulls, which has been shown to cause confusion and disorientation. There were infact a number of earthqakes in Utah which happened pre and post the said event.

The birds appeared to crash into the ground on Monday evening, which is understandable as this is when they prefer to migrate.

There were other earthquakes in Utah pre and post the aforementioned ones, and with that in mind it could be suggested that this geophysical event was ongoing through out this time period at which point the birds happened to be migrating across.

The area they came down was in Cedar City, 200 miles south of Provo, if the earthquakes did indeed have an effect on the little compasses within their heads (Magnetite) then it could be that this caused the mass confusion.

Now taking all the above and other factors into consideration I would propose two possible cases, and two possible catalysts:

1) Something scared the birds, which triggered their natural instinct causing them to dive into what they thought to be water, given the heightened fear and confusiuon.
2) A geophysical event was occuring / had occured which affeceted the magnetite causing them to become confused and disorientated.
