Right. But this thread is a hypothetical about the possibility of selective disclosure should there be something to disclose.

I was just reading about the new planet that Kepler has discovered in a sun's habitable zone and started to wonder what all of this "search for alien life" activity could mean in terms of eventual disclosure.
So, the US government decides that it's citizens need to know that alien life exists. If they come out and say "we've been lying to you for decades and here's all we know about aliens, their ships, culture, etc" folks would probably be mad about at the long running deception...to put it mildly.
Another route is to "discover" alien life and let information out as what was "just" discovered. Such as "we've just discovered a planet in a habitable zone...oh wait, just got an alien signal...oh wait, they're on the way...oh wait, now they're here...oh wait, aliens are now here for the first time ever! let's learn about them together!"
It would be a way to "disclose" the truth of alien life without coming clean about covering it up since forever.
*** Of course you may argue that disclosure will never come for whatever reason, but that's not the topic of this thread.

They already had disclosure a few weeks ago. The White House said that it didn't know anything much about UFOs other than they were unidentified, and that they weren't aware of any aliens, so there was no sense in connecting the two. Disclosure. The end.
It was in all the papers.

Yes, exactly! And we all know how the government is honest and transparent !!
And if the papers say it...well...then...it must be true.[...]
Disclosure will NEVER happen.

There's still a chance that there's nothing to disclose.
