Spanish was my first language so excuse my ignorance.
Why the hell do we even call it the "Sun" in english?

Its called Sol in spanish
Soliel in French
Sole in Italian

But no, we need to be the special language.
Lets call it the "sun" but lets keep "Solar System"

Might as well go all out and call it the "Sun System" in that language.

the name solar system comes from the name of our star SOL if it was surrounding another star it would be called after that star .IE the alpha system .!

It is derived from Old English ("Sunne" or "Sonne"). Which is itself derived from the early Germanic languages.

Modern English is a hodge-podge of many influences, as it exists today.

I sense a bit of tongue-in-cheek here but it is my understanding that the name of our system is the Solar System.

I call it Dave.

That is all.

What about the British Imperium of Man?

Or the People's System of Planets

I like the name 'Sol' for our system.

Maybe a possible other name could be 'Octosol'... since there's 8 main planets, sorry Pluto.

Although, Octosol does kinda sound like the name of a flu medication...

Or, since this system is one out of many different systems, much like different serial numbers and since we live in the "Milky" Way Galaxy, our solar system could be called the Serial (Cereal) System?...

I've read in some science textbook that it's called Sol. I vote to call it "Home".

"Solarians" sounds more like the name of the new Universal Currency to use, when the Dollar and Euro collapse.

The exchange rate with Rigellian *eEnnK is brutal, though. Might want to get your *eEnnK's at the spaceport, before you depart. They rip you off on Rigel, if you wait until you get there.

"Hey, give me three '*eEnnK's for a Solarian, and keep the change".

Guess it is all a matter of perspective.
What constellation would we be in when viewed from another solar system?
Definitely not what we see in the night sky.

There must be software that allows us to view the sky from the perspective of other nearby stars. I don't know what it is, but there must be.

What did Carl Sagan do to describe where we live?

Why, math, of course!

"Or, next star, and a little to the right."

Actually, you got me to thinking, so looked up the plaques on Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11.

Symbolism explained

I'd love to see the faces on the aliens when they finally arrive hoping for the naked chicks and dudes as depicted on the plaque. Instead,--everyone is clothed and hugely overweight.

Hehehehe.

We live in the Milky Way Galaxy, and our solar system is unofficially called the Terran (Sol) System. Some astronomers call it Solar System with capital letters.

There's only one Solar System.

Solar system is a conceptual name for a group of planets. If you dug into the construct further, you would have learned that there are billions of solar systems. Each one is made up of a different number of planets. Its an elementary school concept.

Link: Terran System

The Sol System is a star system in the Milky Way's Outer Rim. Centered around a yellow dwarf known as Sol, it includes 8 planets. Of the 8 plants only 3 orbit in Sol's habitual zone, Venus (Uninhabited due to it's suffering from a runaway greenhouse effect.), Terra (Inhabited by a number of life forms, several intelligent and 1 Level 0.9 civilization. However, it is currently undergoing the Holocene Mass Extinction, it's 6th, and the local civilization has a fetish for dissecting (still living) visitors so travel to this world is ill advised.) and Mars (An uninhabited and geologically dead desert world.). It is ruled by the Terrans (Though their grip on power beyond the Terran System (A planetary system within the Sol System.) is weak almost to the point of being non-existent.) and is a largely irrelevant system on the larger galactic scale.

Where do you think "Star Trek" got the name designation?

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not, but there seems to be a lot of people who aren't aware that our "star system" or "planetary system" is actually already named. "Solar System" is not a generic term for star systems or planetary systems. The generic term for these are in fact "star system" or "planetary system".

We have given our system a proper name already.

It is named the Solar System. No need to try to shorten it to the Sol System. Sol is the name we have chosen for our star. Solar simply means "of or relating to Sol". Thusly it is named the Solar System.

Actually,I just watched this show today about this.
It was ancient aliens and they were talking about the pioneer missions and the plaques that they place on those ships.Carl Sagan was in charge of that part of the mission and the discs that they place on them was trying to describe our solar systems location.

Well, don't know about computer software, but Betty Hill was pretty sure at least about a road map she saw once, somewhere...
