Why is it that we have no name for our own solar system? Do we just call it our "Solar System"? We have named everything outside our solar system. We need a name.

Sol means sun in Latin. Should we be the Sol system?

Or should we be a numerical nomenclature?

Aliens want to know. How do we communicate about our very small orbital system. Did Carl Sagan program his disc to say we are the "_____" solar system?

I find it strange after all these years that we have no name for our solar system. Much like the Pyramids of Egypt have no inscriptions of who built them.

Anyone else find this odd?

I sense a bit of tongue-in-cheek here but it is my understanding that the name of our system is the Solar System.

As you state, the Sun is also called Sol.
www.merriam-webster.com...

Definition of SOLAR
1: of, derived from, relating to, or caused by the sun

en.wikipedia.org...

Hope it helps.

Perhaps we should extrapolate a name base on the names of our orbs in the sky,

Sun

Mercury

Venus

Earth

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Uranus

Neptune

= Smvemjsun

Kinda sounds Scandinavian. What do you think?

I think you already nailed it. Most common I see is "Sol System". A runner-up might by the "Terran System".

That's a bit Earth-specific, but reasonable given that this is the only planet with indigenous sentient life (that we know of....more specifically, sentient and technologically capable).

Still, the most logical would be to use the star's name as primary. Of course, when you get into systems with more than one star, well....I'm sure these things will be decided upon eventually. When we get there.

Another thing to consider is the "language" to use. Presuming we travel to Aldebaran one day (or, pick any candidate star) and find it has a planet orbiting, with an intelligent species occupying the planet.

Now, for our purposes, do we still call it the "Aldebaran System"? Or, once we communicate with the natives, does it change to reflect their language and terms?

Purely speculative of course, but it works both ways.

Exactly...what language do we use? You almost went over my head there. How would we describe our little solar system to another species?

Obviously by math of course. What did Carl Sagan do to describe where we live?

He sent a binary encoded message into space and we got an answer back quite recently, also binary encoded.

I'm feeling I've got to push this question off the Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. LOL!

We really need a name. Any Scandinavians on board here?

Generally most star maps call it Sol.

What I find funny is if we send out a signal to the aliens that we are here, what if they don't call it Sol? Could cause masses of confusion... Maybe that's why no-one's found us yet...

Alien 1: "We're receiving a signal sir, they say they are in the Sol System."

Alien 2: "Hmmm, I don't see Sol on any chart, better just ignore it."

Smvemjun... That's awesome

How about the humans are getting ready to fu*k up this system.
Explore and exploit.

On a more serious note,
Sentient 9,
because of the number of planets, including Pluto, and the beings residing there.

Why, math, of course!

"Or, next star, and a little to the right."

Actually, you got me to thinking, so looked up the plaques on Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11.
