I only ask because maybe he had military connections? Maybe it wasn't just a random sighting considering the stationary appearance of the object.

I said "can I ask"?

He doesn't have to.

My dad was in the army when he was young, but he didn't make a career of it. He went to art school in Pittsburgh and then moved to Cleveland to work as an artist. Dad became very well known in his field, but I doubt it had anything to do with this.

I blew the pic up as much as possible and it looks very much like a sombrero with an upside-down frisbee attached to the bottom.

I am not accusing YOU of anything. I think your dad may be the victim of a practical joke or fraudulent claims.

To the OP...

If you are going to get this professionally scanned, the following are VERY IMPORTANT

1, make sure you get a very high-res 16-bit tiff file, to hell with the size of the file
2, make sure it contains an embedded colour profile, this is extremely important (those doing the scanning will understand what I'm talking about).

Other than that, a cool picture!

Incidently, what size is the print?

Hi, I just got up and will drive to kinkos in a few to get this thing scanned at a higher resolution. Thank you for your advice on the 16 bit size...I will tell them. The actual photo size is 3.5 by 5 in.

...yes...an "epic" photo.... *sigh*

The general populace of this website has severely fallen far from the tree lately.

You buy his story & his horribly low quality photo just because it matches your story.

He does not even acknowledge a single request for a high resolution scanned image on the first page.

You're either defectors in a cover up or you REALLY are that bad.

Excuse me, but if you had taken the time to read the ENTIRE thread, the OP HAS OFFERED to get a hires scan and post it.

Looks fake. Hoaxing UFO pictures was popular with nerds in the 70s

Yes I agree, at first sight it looks like a sombrero, however, after seeing a clear resolution of the image done by the iphone member, the UFO does indeed look mechanical underneath. Not uncommon to the Lockheed
test craft from the 70's.

Interesting and intriguing picture as it certainly does look like the real deal. Sadly, you can never really tell these days between fact or fiction and I guess that will be the case for this picture. It certainly looks quite real to me and the image itself looks very old - generally older images/pictures are harder to manipulate. I'll be interested to hear the opinion of someone who knows a thing or two about picture editing.

I think you are misunderstanding the role of Skeptic. We look for proof while giving every new thing the benefit of the doubt until it can be ruled out as a hoax or mistaken identity. Skeptics actually want to find the real thing. You have to start with no opinion and proceed from there.

I can only tell you that I am not a hoaxer and have told the truth about how this came to me. I have posted this actual photo about which I have no knowledge as to whether or not it is something someone 'made up' a long time ago and photographed or actually witnessed at the time and snapped a photo. What I do know is that it's an old photo.

No offense but yes you have no idea...so respectfully I will be critical of the photo.

I don't doubt your honesty and I am not attacking your post...but without more I have to assume that it is fake before I assume it is real...that is the nature of this site and with the millions of fakes you should understand that a person might leer at this skeptically.

Your assuming it is fake which is a fallacy in investigation. You call yourself a skeptic? Well Skeptics use investigative techniques to determine a solution, you have already decided what your solution is based on a glance/look at the photo and nothing else.

Your not showing how scholarly you are, you are actually showing how closed-minded you are, and how argumentative you can be by consistently defending your stance without real evidence as to why your stance is that.

It's ok to abstain from opinion until more evidence is presented, it's by far more unbiased then your leanings.

Quit trying to act smart, start being smart.

Looking forward to seeing the hi -res scan OP. And well done for having the balls to post (and not biting when someone debunks straight away). I truly hope this is something amazing.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Best Wishes

Kippo

You can't blame people for calling hoax.

In the short time I have been on ATS I have seen several.

I did not read every single post.

My comments would be...

What was he trying to film?

Was it luck to have this thing perfectly in frame?

Looking forward to seeing a scan.

Thank you. I'll be looking forward to the remake of Flight Of The Navigator (love that movie).

What do you think about the photo posted by Unknown Soldier?
Do you think it's the same as the photo in the OP?

Cos that's what I'm thinking right now.

Okay. Please bear with me here. As I said, I'm not very technologically savvy to begin with, but I just went to Kinkos and told them to scan this at the highest resolution they have... I also had them do a 16 bitt tiff file, as was suggested to me on here. My wife and I are going to try to get these up here now...but the tiff file seems very large and is taking a while to load to my computer. Standby, please.

Fact is , this picture could have been taken yesterday for all we know .
We read the OP's account and automatically accepted the picture .

Try not to be so open minded that we allow our brains to fall out .

... and your tagline is "Open your mind and your heart will follow." It's the same people that purposefully disregard solid evidence who claim that solid evidence doesn't exist. In the end, the evidence doesn't matter with these people - just their own preconceptions.

I thought it was really cool that the OP found a non-digital photograph of a UFO and took a picture of it instead of scanning it in (at first), so that we could see it. Also, this is one of the few UFO pictures I have seen that is actually clear. Awesome.

When uploading the tiff image, my computer just said it was too large for my file cabinet. I'm still working on this though.

Here's my initial opinion. it has been mentioned before i think.

the object is in focus like the trees in front, It would indicate that it's at the same distance from the camera as the front trees. when you compare the size of the leaves on the tree and the object, you realize that the object was quite small.

I would go with the model on a string theory.

looks sorta like a shark in an underwater scene in a negative of the original photograph.
its tail appears to be obscured .
there are plumes of "smoke" coming up from the "tree" line which may be
dust plumes rising up from sea floor the "tree" line may be coral reefs/sea weed

that's one interesting photograph.
