An AK is is a better weapon than you give it credit for, I'm an AR guy BUT first rule about rifles (IMO) is to make what you have work for you BEFORE you buy a new one. other wise you'll waste too much!

If your AK feels awkward ask "In what way?" is it hard to hold? or recoil killing you? stock to long/short?

TAPCO makes really good sliding TAC stocks to adjust those problems. If shooting is to much, Try a recoil pad or a weighted recoil compinsator for the barrel. Just try those ideas BEFORE buying an AR you may find the same you had with your AK come back to bite you.

as far as a .45 carbine- Auto Ordinace makes a Tommy gun with a long barrel add a 50 round drum and you'll be turning heads at the range or killing zombies by the pack!

Unfortunately they have not made HAARP small enough to shoulder fire.

ONE of my weapons that I really love is a Savage .243 bolt action, equipped with a leaupold 3x10x50 scope. Fantastic weapon, highly accurate, and its synthetic so it's very light. Close combat or home defense I have a Remington 1100 12guage, pump action. If someone is in your home, and you make that distinct "pump" action sound, GUARENTEE they will think twice about approaching any closer. Sidearm is a Ruger 9, and a CRK 7 inch chisel point knife, no jams, works every time. Just PLEASE know how to safely operate any weapon. And Practice

As a shooter all my life and a prepper for 25 years and after seeing your list of firearms owned already I would highly recommend a .22 rifle to round out your collection.

I prefer the Ruger 10/22 because it's fairly cheap, highly customizable, super dependable and accurate.

If you want something with more power and NOT an AK look at the Ruger mini-30. It shoots the same ammo as the AK so you don't have to buy a different caliber but it is a more refined rifle.

I think everyone should own a .22 though.....

As much as people bash the .22 I love them.

I have

.22
-Mossberg 152
-Ruger 10/22
-Browning precision pistol

.223/5.56
-Daniel Defense M4
-Ruger Mini-14

.357
-Smith and Wesson model 29

.40
-Sig Sauer P226 Elite

12g
Remington 870

If I ever go camping the only gun that is GUARANTEED to be in the back of my jeep is the Ruger 10/22
You can shoot all day on 12 bucks, and empty a clip super fast without feeling a sharp pain in your wallet.

any recommendations?

If I were shooting high power competition for the AR-15 platform, I would get a direct gas-impingement system, instead of the piston; with a 223 Wylde chamber that can function with 223 or 5.56x45 rounds. Otherwise I would buy a 5.56x45 chamber.

DPMS.... sells a nice AR-10.

I have a 9mm Sterling Mark 3 semi-auto carbine - Which is one of the most expensive, and of the most highest quality submachine guns ever made in its time. Comes with high quality used 32 round magazines, though never use a STEN magazine in a Sterling; for you might get a premature detonation in a Sterling.

You can buy one at J&G Sales for $400.00 dollars. I would suggest that you buy at least 3 magazines, and locktight the tiny stock pins.

Enjoy,

I'm not bashing you. but why gas impingement over piston impingement?
I have a gas Impingement M4 (AR-15). but I'm ready to convert it to piston.
I have heard of carrier tilt but that can be countered with a new bolt carrier.

It all depends on what you want to do with it .. For example if you are looking for a deer gun forget about a standard 5.56 AR platform .. but if you are looking for self defense or a weapon for if/when SHTF the 5.56 AR would be something to consider . . the ammo is relatively cheap and so are mags etc . . If money is not much of an issue I would look at an AR rifle chambered in the relatively new 6.8 or 300 blackout .. these are both more powerful rounds than the 5.56 round is , therefor would be better for larger game . . Also if you are looking for a hunting rifle consult your state laws . . For example in Kansas it is illegal to hunt deer with 5.56 ammo . . . my personal opinion is everyone needs an AK and an AR for self defense . .. if the SHTF there should be plenty of ammo for both rifle platforms available

I believe that a gas impingement system is a little more accurate than a piston system in an AR. The piston system costs more, and you need to clean the forward part of the piston alot. I do not have a piston AR, but I do have gas impingement AR's. . But a person at a gunrange who sports a piston AR, gets alot of kudo's from many fellow shooter's

Check out articles by David Fortier in Shotgun News - about the pro's and con's.

I am not trying to start a big debate but the impengment system has nothing to do with accuracy .. that is solely on the ammo, barrel, trigger control and the operator .. A gas impengment system (traditional system) actually runs much more dirty than gas piston .. with the gas impengment system the dirty gas is forced back through the internal workings of the gun (bolt, carrier group etc) causing possible gumming build up etc .. there fore they need much more cleaning than a gas piston gun where the gas hits a piston causing a mechanical action to cycle the next round rather than gas .. now on a gas piston system the dirty gas escapes the system usually near the font of the weapon which can show up as a black carbon like stain . . however this is just on the surface of the weapon and can be wiped off very easily where as on a gas impengment weapon the gas gets to the internal workings of the gun and needs to be broke down and thoroughly cleaned after usage . .. This is part of what makes an AK such a reliable weapon as it was one of the first weapons to use the gas piston system .. in my opinion a gas piston AR is a better choice than gas impengment (also known as D.I. direct impengment) .. the only draw back is gas piston system are slightly heavier than D.I. . . Most companies that make AR style weapons are all converting over to gas piston for these reasons .. example Sig, P.O.F., bushmaster, FN, etc . .

i've shot the guns you mentioned. you have good taste in rifles. i like the reuger mini-14. it's semi auto with varying clip capacity. at 300 yards i can open a folgers can. even iron sights i can hit it at that range with a mini. get a reloader for your shells though. i also like the mosin nagant if you don't want the a-k to feel lonely. rifle is cheap, ammo is cheap and is fairly accurate with or withour scope

yeah thats basically how I feel., only thing that holding me back is I LOVE my Daniel Defense front rails. and they wont work with piston impingement due to clearance issues.

I'm in the same boat with one of my Rock River AR's .. I wanna convert to Gas piston but hate to have to buy a conversion kit and a new quad railed forearm .. I will one day but till then I'll continue to clean the heck outa it . . A topic for a whole nother debate would be what gas piston conversion kit to use . . I have heard pros and cons on all of them . .. At this point I would lean towards Osprey or Adams Arms
