Any cops want to defend the use of a taser in this incident?

I have to agree with this, even though I am a big fan of the taser. I'm not a fan however, of how police just instantly jump the gun and pull the taser. It's one thing to use it on a person fleeing as long as that person is extremely violent. But I've seen instances where a cop is just an arm grab away from someone running where they instead decide to use their taser.

I mean come on. But in this case, what else would the police do? If they tackle him from the bike, not only do they risk injury for the guy on the bike, but themselves too. Plus, when you get a call like that, you don't know what the guy is up to. First of all, it was said he was drunk. Secondly, he's not listening to police when they tell him to get off the bike. (Yes, I got the part about him being deaf but the police didn't know that.) Are they not supposed to pursue someone when they're called? One day, that "old guy" on the bike may very well have been a pedophile, druggie or other criminal that should have been stopped.

What is sign language for "stop" anyway?

Hold your left hand out in front of you palm up. "Chop" your right hand down on your left palm. Used to use this before my autistic son learned verbal skills. To this day I can "stop" either kid from across the room with that hand gesture.

Absolutely ridiculous on the part of the cops and just adds to my fear that, one day, my son may run into a bully cop who doesn't realize 1 out of 85 boys are now diagnosed on the autism spectrum and may not be able to wrap their mind around a verbal command.

Interesting perspective, I am minded that there were 100 different ways the old guy could have been disarmed. I am far too lazy to look but is there any material evidence that since the introduction of tasers that police deaths and injury rates whilst apprehending criminals/suspects has fallen? Trying to rationalise how the police would have handled this incident 50 years ago with the perceived fear of apprehending a drunk old man on a bicycle deaf or not with the action taken in 2011?!?

how threatinging a skinny 61 year old man on a bike . i am fearful he might run me down lets zap him.
here is how it probably went . cop threw car window get off your bike no reply from cyclist ok zap him . and by the way being hearing impaired means you are deaf in some degree.. these cops should get time foe negligent homicide
they know the smurfed up when their boss asks for information and they turn him away. if i was that mayor i would be passing out pink slips on friday.

Every profession has its black sheeps.
What baffles me is this... the "good Cops" should strongly dissociate themselves from the "bad Cops" and demand that they are fired and put on trial immediately... why don't they?

We as a society grant our LEOs special rights and those rights come with special obligations.

Its because for some reason they feel the need to "protect their own" as if theyre in some special club or something. Its sickening and I just dont understand how you can just turn a blind eye to something like this.

Unbelievable. Something needs done to stop these crazy policemen who are demanding the public to "obey or get shot."

Here's another one from today's Daily Mail. Not sure what the complete story is but whatever happened to talking to someone before pulling out weapons and firing like a posse of outlaws.

Tasered 9 times for carrying toy gun

Why the american cops are so afraid of the U.S. civilians, why? Its like they are there to just punish civilians all the time, peeper spraying, beating, doing that taser thing even to elders ones... just wow!! War on "terror" are finally giving its fruits.

He went to get coffee like he did every morning. Police coincidentally got a report of a drunk black male. The 61 yr old man was riding a bicycle when he was tasered, apparently the policeman had one too many donuts and could not run up to the bike, or stop his patrolcar AHEAD of this man. I like to walk while listening to my mp3 player. Guess that is another tiny freedom I can no longer enjoy. Small price to pay to have no worries about false flags, ugh, I mean terrorism. This was a rookie BTW-1 month on duty. WTF are noobs being taught regarding us? Are we all that much of a threat to each other? If so, maybe our military should be in their own country taking care of biz, since we are apparently all domestic terrorists. Hope this man's family sees justice.

from what ive gathered by looking into it and talking to cops is that its not that they go out of there way all the time to defend each other by the blue wall of silence its that the good cops are outnumbered by the bad cops and if you start talking and radio for back up who u think is gonna get the call the officers that you reported on and then the good cops lives get put at risk if they say anything (wont get back up or it will respond slowly or a few might even full on kill the informers) they say nothing out of fear not from the law or moral justice but from those they work with

Wow.... Based on the info in the article its looking like the officers need to go back through training on use of force when no crime has been committed. Of course that retraining wont occur, again based on info in the article, because they will be too busy defending themselves in court.

This looks like a huge over reaction. Im still trying for the life of me to figure out why they thought using a taser to stop an individual who broke no law was a good idea.

Unless more info comes out thats not reported in the article that changes the situation, the officers need to be investigated and if appropriate under N. Carolina law, charged.

How about you ask the 89 year old woman in michigan who shot and killed a MI State Police Officer on a traffic stop because she thought they found the body of her dead husband.

While I understand what you are saying, complaceny can kill.

I'm still trying to figure out what laws this poor obviously compromised person could have broke, and why anyone (law enforcers and non) would see this person (look at the picture) as a threat to anyone, that would require ANY measurable force at all.... I mean... Really WTF??

At least in American when something like this happens and the officers were to blame there is a good chance they will be charged. In the UK when an officer does something wrong that results in the death of the member of public they usually just get suspended or dismissed.

'There has been no information that this man was a threat to anybody,'

this right here says it all.

i hope the spirit of the deceased man keeps hunting the cop for the rest of his life.
now THAT would be a punishment.
