What about ageing though. If it was brought out tommorow and given to people, would you be stuck at the age you are now,or can you get to resemble a lot younger?

Excellent Questions.
I would think people would be less inclined to do extreme sports and
more inclined to venture to space and beyond.

Ooo.
But there's bad things in space. Long term exposure to radiation...
But rejuvenation therapies would probably cope with that. No worries! Drive on!

I think it would probably be slow the ageing process
from where you are at the moment.
Good Question!

Your observations make sense.
Definitely all plausible outcomes.

I also agree with the precipitately concept.
I would change careers every 50 years or so....

What about alopecia ? Are they able to regenerate hair growth and revitalize pigment ? It certainly counts as to how old one looks.

For me I think concentrating on making sure we have a decent quality of life is more important than trying to get people to live for crazy extended periods of time.

The money that can be saved on healthcare if we all had healthy skin, joints and bones. Of course it's a catch 22 because at some point you would need cell degeneration and then comes all the problems of ageing.

Maybe you should get your 70 and have to earn any extra time up to a maximum limit.

Interesting thought....
And what happens when you reach your limit?

When life isn't so short, what becomes of extreme sports?
With more life to live, does risk taking become less attractive?

No. For the most part people live in the here and now. We commit acts regularly without considering the consequences. If anything, living longer would only make us think that we are more durable than we are. We would take more risks, not less.

Balance...

As someone who was brought up in non religious environment, I fear death because I feel I won't be able to do everything I want to do before I go, but maybe that is because I'm still young.

If we could live to be 1000, think of the possibilities we could accomplish. What the great scientific and creative minds could design if they didn't succumb to old age.

The only problem is, if it was available to everyone, then the people who leach off others, who don't work and innovate would also live long lives. Now I'm not one for segregation, and I don't think one person deserves something more than another, but surely if these people didn't change their ways then it kind of defeats the object of having the treatment to extend life.

I'm not sure what the solution would be, but something needs to be done to change people's attitudes before any live extending treatments are introduced to the public.

Wiki stats:

"...world population will continue to grow until at least 2050, with the population reaching 9 billion in 2040,[67][68] and some predictions putting the population in 2050 as high as 11 billion.[69]

According to the United Nations' World Population Prospects report:[70]

The world population is currently growing by approximately 74 million people per year. Current United Nations predictions estimate that the world population will reach 9.0 billion around 2050, assuming a decrease in average fertility rate from 2.5 down to 2.0.[71][72]
Almost all growth will take place in the less developed regions, where today's 5.3 billion population of underdeveloped countries is expected to increase to 7.8 billion in 2050."

Personally, it would play hell on our natural resources. Unless they can figure out how to feed and house this many people on a long term basis, something would have to give.

Actually the Problem is with: Latin America, India(and the middle eastern nations), and Africa being the number one culprit of over population(meaning African's are responsible for most over population, one of the reasons for the water shortages).

If those regions where "dealt with", over population wouldn't be a problem. Europe, Japan, USA/Canada and even China have gotten their populations under control.

At this point though, there is no incentive to engage in population control anymore as it is consigning your race/ethnicity to extinction as the less advanced and less conscience races/cultures are breeding like jack rabbits. Look at the ethnic genocide mexicans are engaging against American's(in particular African American's are facing outright genocide in many regions at the hands of Hispanic immigrants). Times that by 10, as the advanced nations will be invaded by hoards of barbarians from Latin America, Africa and India.

What is being discussed here, for the most part, is the main plot element of a 70's sci-fi movie called "Zardoz". A low budget cult classic starring Sean Connery.

From IMDb:

Zardoz (1974) R 105 min - Fantasy | Sci-Fi - 6 February 1974 (USA)

"In the far future, a savage trained only to kill finds a way into the community of bored immortals that alone preserves humanity's achievements."

In spite of it's dated, hip counter culture overtones and low budget production, this scenario is too close to be science fiction anymore.

I feel sorry for anyone who ends up living forever, they will miss out on what I believe to be the afterlife. Mother nature gave me a life expectancy and I respect her wishes.

No No No and No have you seen this film?
www.imdb.com...
It is about something is implanted into your arm when born like a big watch and when you hit 25 you stay at the age of 25 but have to earn the extra time...Imagine how much time the 1% would have?
Personally I agree with this in only one aspect If we were to travel to other stars then yes use the magic pill, but seeing we can't feed a third of us already we shouldn't use it on earth.
Getting old and dying is part of life and what make's us human, it teaches the younger generation about loss (when parents die).
Heck wouldn't you get board anyhow?

The eventual acceptability of suicide would counteract an overpopulation concern.

i think the amount of people who want to die FAR outweighs the people who want to live forever. Why stop them?

If I could live a 1000 years I would get to work on a better education and finding a higher paying job, then after working enough to save up a million dollars, I would put it in a term deposit and just live the rest of my life off the interest. Then I could spend my days doing absolutely anything! partying/socialising, learning new things, taking up new hobbies/sports, read lots of books, date lots of women, etc, etc.

Although I'm not sure I would want to live a 1000 years, I'm very curious to see whats on the other side as I'm a strong believer in the afterlife. I believe what awaits us there is much greater than you could ever imagine this life to be.

I also agree with your last statement!
