I'm sorry but that "dude" got treated correctly by what is considered to be robust policing.

He was told to move several times and remained defiant. What did he expect was going to happen?
Did he think he was going to be handed a bunch of flowers, a handshake and a "it's ok friend, we're only playing" apology from the Police!

If he wasn't doing what he was doing the incident wouldn't have happened. No point crying after the event.

Are you a cop, an authority bootlicker, or just too young and stupid or naive to know better than to think that anything and everything done by someone clothed with authority is A-O-K?

What do you mean by "robust policing"? Hey, it would have been more "robust" if the jack-booted thug in police riot gear wielding the night stick had just shot him dead right there! Now that would have been a quick, tidy, and oh so "robust" solution to the problem, wouldn't you say? [For those unable to recognize it when you see it, that was sarcasm]

So what if he was told to move and get on the ground several times? So what? We have to do whatever a cop says on pain of being feloniously assaulted with deadly force?

That cop is a criminal who should be charged, prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced to a lengthy prison term for felony assault on an unarmed citizen. That riot geared thug cop is not the judge, jury, and executioner. This no doubt was just one of many instances when he has assaulted peaceful citizens. All his fellow officers who witnessed that crime and failed to intervene and arrest that cop are accessories to his crimes.

I imagine it becomes habitual after a while. What a high! Like a narcotic drug. Oh, the adrenalin rush which gets more and more intense with each blow of the night stick and the joy of hearing a disobedient citizen's screams which are heard as encouragement to keep hitting and hitting harder! All that soon to be followed by the approving smiles, hearty pats on the back, and praise from the boys back at the barracks after a hard night of visiting well-deserved justice on those damn fool protesters!

Let us not forget the commendations, pay raises, and promotions to follow! Why, he might become a SWAT commander as a reward! Ah, yes, what could be better than dispensing street justice upon an unarmed peaceful citizen with the finest of the Oakland P.D. at your back, seeing all that you're doing, and not so much as raising a single disapproving eyebrow. What a place to be! Oakland P.D. A violent cop's paradise on earth. That could become a song.

Do you really think the citizen's failure to dutifully obey the cop's commands to move and get down on the ground justifies the assault? If so, then no-one should pay you any attention except, perhaps, to help you find appropriate therapy.

When the police so brazenly and openly commit violent crimes without fear of any consequence, knowing there will be no consequence, we have reached a truly sad turning point in this society.

People like that make me sick, there was no reason what so ever to pull out a baton and start flogging the crap out of the poor guy. Just another cop with too much authority and too little brains.

I found 0:59 extremely disturbing, the guy is falling to the ground and the cop takes that opportunity to crack him in the head.. I am surprised he isn't in a comma right now..

It just gets worse and worse - these armed, uniformed cowards who are defending the corporations think very little of beating up journalists, old women, war vets, students, protesters and the hundreds of other types of people who are lawfully demonstrating their right to protest.

The link included contains a video.

It contains bad language and can be considered quite shocking. (Unless of course you actively enjoy seeing unarmed people beaten up).

Protester and three-tour American veteran Kayvan Sabehgi was beaten by Oakland police during the Occupy protest's general strike on 2 November. Sabehgi, who was 'completely peaceful', according to witnesses, was left with a lacerated spleen

Kudos to the lady at the end and the camera guy.

'Are you going to shoot me whilst i'm filming you?'

'Did any of you want to deliberately hurt the war vet?'

Good job. You just took credit for Keith Olbermann's broadcast.

This is a FREE nation. You sir are wrong.

He wasn't resisting arrest. He refused to follow a cop's orders. With that act, he broke the law.
He should be ashamed of himself, since he was in violation of his oath. If he was standing in solidarity with the OWS people, he was standing in solidarity with communists.

You're the communist, totalitarian, fascist, dictatorial, abuse of power loving knuckelhead! I can see why you chose the screen name "LifeIsPeculiar". Life must surely seem peculiar with a world view such as yours.

The way these cops treated that veteran is what I would expect in a so-called "communist" iron-fisted authoritarian system. But that happened here in the U.S.A. That sort of thing is not "supposed to" happen here.

Did you flunk out of grade school? You obviously have no concept of how the system here is supposed to operate versus how it actually does operate in reality.

Why should he have to move??

Because the police asked him to move. The police are authorized by We The People to enforce the law with force if necessary. There is no reason to defy the police. This has been the case throughout history in all Nations. Why would it be different in this case?

Another matter: The vet took an Oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. If we was throwing his lot in with the OWS people, he was joining people who have clearly indicated that they hope to replace the current government with a socialist/communist government where people's wealth are distrubuted in a manner pleasing to the OWS people. He violated his oath.

Oh, but you're so wrong.

That vet was defending the constitution and standing up to those who were blatantly and openly violating it. He risked his physical safety to do it and he was violated by the very agents of government whose job it is to protect him.

You should really move to a totalitarian country. You'd be much happier there.

It matters that he's a veteran. The fact that he is a veteran draws far more people's attention to this injustice. If that fact wasn't mentioned, then many more people would just write him off as some poor SOB who got what he deserved because he didn't immediately and compliantly obey his master's commands. These criminal cops will apparently beat anyone into submission for being disobedient. They behave like mindless thug drones.

The problem with your analysis is that he did not exhibit any threatening behavior. Are you saying cops should be permitted to use potentially lethal force whenever they hallucinate that someone might be a threat?

That vet was defending the constitution

He was hanging out with people whose signs clearly call for the destruction of the govenment that was established by the Constitution. I guess you didn't bother to read the signs or see the people walking on the US flag.

He was doing averything BUT defending the Constitution.

Do you have any evidence to support that assertion? He is a veteran. Opposing corruption and governmental violence against the people of this country is not a call for anything that's contrary to the Constitution. I doubt that he was calling for the destruction of the government established by the Constitution. OWS is not calling for that either. In fact, they're protesting against the perversion of a government that now exists in the USA. Maybe you should read the Constitution and a little history. It might you gain a more balanced and accurate perspective.

Do you have any evidence to support that assertion?

There are plenty of threads on this site that show pictures of the communist banners, the signs calling for the destruction of the government, and people walking on an American flag. Those people were not ejected from the movenment; and, that indicates solidarity with those who bore those signs. The solidier in question was in solidarity with the mob. What more connectivity do you need?

Even if, just for the sake of argument, you are right in your perception of the vetran's "connectivity" to what you believe are bad elements in the OWS movement, that cop nonetheless committed a serious criminal assault upon that veteran, plain and simple. The cop viciously assaulted an unarmed peaceful protester. He must not go unpunished. We don't condone official brutality for any reason, and certainly not under the circumstances shown in that video. Why should anyone respect the law when the guardians of the law don't respect it themselves?

I don't know why I keep reading these threads. It makes me so depressed to see this kind of behaviour in the first place, but what really upsets me are the people actually defending the position of the police here. Can't you get it in your heads that the police has no business there at all? NO ONE deserves to be beaten like that by anyone else. If the police had the right to arrest this man, they could have done it without beating him at all. Those &#@ pigs are just power-hungry mindless animals, very eager to beat the living hell out of anyone crossing their path. Those people are exercising their RIGHT to peacefully assemble and protest. They should be protected by the police instead of harassed. It's truly embarrassing to be of the same species as some of you on this thread.

Nope, police shouldn't be there.

And in case you did not know smashing windows, starting fires and spray painting stuff on other people's property is not "free speech"

It's always easy to use that excuse ^^ when the anarchists get involved, though

I don't even need to watch that video to know they are agents or all-out trouble makers in the first place

Edit: I watched it anyway. Surprise, surprise - they were described as "fully masked individuals, wearing black from head to toe"

I've said it once and i'll say it again... OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE IS NOT THE SAME AS CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE! GREAT post!

These cops don't know how lucky they are, they really don't.

They step on their line, first scared, but then pumped because they feel like everyone's afraid of them, so they have the unquestioning authority to do as they please.

What they don't realize, is that people are not afraid of them, they are giving them a chance to step back from their current path, to change their ways. Their chances are running out, and if they continue to assault, harass, and terrorize people, then they will receive the same treatment in return. It will be the cops getting beaten and bloodied and left on the street with lack of medical attention.

None of them recognize humility, integrity or honor. They just don't get it. All they see is "jobless hippies making my life worse". None of them realize that we're actually not there to fight them, but they are standing in the way of what is inevitable justice to the system they willfully defend with guns and batons.

You're a million to one boys, what's it gonna be? Is this what they really want? They really want to beat and bloody their own brothers and sisters for damn peanuts from their useless masters?

----

I personally like how someone had said, "All we need are one, or two bounced checks, and the cops are with us.", and it's true, they just don't get it..
