Certain catastrophes, there's no getting away from, unless you have a safe underground bunker, or a cave. Even a cave has its limitations.

Bunkers can be bombed, and if you or yours have taken the time and effort caves can be very comfortable and secure.

One of the most important things is to only let the people you want to be there know where it is and what they need to bring.

I have never had any doubt about women's abilities, but it would be awful hard to try and repopulate with just you and your girls.

You are so right, I can't tell how many of those type I see come into my area every year, especially in hunting season. They think a week in a cabin with hot and cold running water, electricity, and a paved road is roughing it. Almost none of them have the faintest idea of how to get by with just a good pair of hiking boots and a good sharp knife.

I spend weeks every summer either in the woods with the tools I can make, or working at our facility. I just thank the Boss upstairs that my Grandfather was a forward thinking and very cautious man. Anything short of an ELE, and we will probably be fine.

left that cesspool people call 'civilisation' long ago.
fully self-sufficient and far from the madness.
between the climate, terrain, jungle, 40+ year old unexploded ordinance laying around, tropical diseases, wild animals very few ..if any people will find their way out here...

I have a cookbook from 1947 that has recipes for Squirrel Fricasee and Squirrel Pot Pie

Among other small things like woodchuck, possum, muskrat

Basically prepare squirrel and simmer in broth or seasoned water till very tender. Slow cook.
It also tells to make sure to remove the scent glands in the small of the back, and under the forelegs and thighs. Don't cut into the glands

Only roast or fry the young ones, the older ones need slower cooking.

If it has fur, feathers or fins, in North America you can eat it.
Cookbooks will only help you make it taste better

Animals like Deer have 4 musk glands under the "arms" and in the fold of the legs.
Remove them to get rid of the "gamey" taste.
Avoid Wild Hog if you have want to avoid musky meat. Removing glands won't help with a hog.

You need to scratch the surface bro!
If there are squirrels, there are nuts too, and wood!

Plus if the folks bug out of my area, I'ma gonna grab all their canned and dry foods to supplement mine.

This is why it is important to have a 22 cal pellet gun, good hit, low velocity, no sound.

This is spot ON guys .. No sound is key..

Once a cockroach darts out into the open, it can be killed. Covert, unseen, undetected. For the property, plan your booby traps as an unpassable gauntlet NOW.

I need to hurry up and get some land out in the country.. if I had to stick out a SHTF situation where I am now, I'd be chop liver. I live right in the middle of downtown in a city. People would be breaking into my house left and right.. and I don't want to have to bug out. I want to live in a safe, self-sustainable location with no need to leave. I also want to learn to hunt with a bow and arrow.

My plan is to stay right were im at on the farm...I live on 140 acres of prime hunting land miles from the nearest town ..We are self-sufficient with alot of lakes nearby our own well for water, large garden and plenty of guns and ammo plus a wood burning stove for winter..But the only thing we will have to worry about is city folk trying to move in on the property or trying to take our food but i guess thats where the guns come in handy and all my family lives in farms close to us..Peace,sugarcookie1

Running from your sanctuary is possible one of the worse move many will make. Unless you absolutely have to leave your home the safest place for most to defend will be their home.

Many think just running away with a Bug-out-bag is the end all be all answer when SHTF but that will rarely be the case.

When the rioters in the cities start burning sections of the cities, the cities will not be safe.

Look to the LA riots for a taste of what it will be like.

I will be bugging out, I have land in a rural area to go to.

I do not have most of the things the OP mention that might chain me to the city.

I do not even have a full time job.

So when it comes time I will be leaving.

As for getting stuck in traffic that is why you want a alternate route or a few of them.

I hate how people think that they can just go to the woods like no else has the same idea. Every one and their grand parents think they can just go to the woods and survive by escaping the city but half the city will move to the woods.

Some of the ppl out in the rural areas are armed to the teeth.

The rural ppl have been getting ready for the golden horde scenario.

A bad kill will make your meat gamey as well, ie multiple shots and a long chase.
Hogs are more gamey as they will hunt you if they figure out you are hunting them.
I think it's an adrenaline thing.

Not a good idea when the neighbor kid jumps your fence to retrieve his ball covertly, as he knows the guy who lives there always wears camo and is constantly bringing guns in and out of the house to go to the range.
Now the neighborhood kids know you as the "block nut".
But after said kid sets off said booby trap you are now known as Prisoner #xxxxxxxxx, and most probably some other inmates new love interest.
You can take your prepping too far in some cases, we still have our veneer up of a normal society.
When you start to see running riots going on all over your country, then know the time is close, when it turns into a full on war, that is the time.
But know booby traps work on allies just as good as enemies.

Don't forget. In many of the SHTF scenarios you have raging mobs of idiots in the streets. Take away their medication and we are on the verge of a zombie apocalypse. Apart from my immediate family (household) I no longer know one single person who is not taking addictive, mind altering drugs (anti depressants, anti anxiety, pain killers, ADD-or stimulants, opiates, anti phsychotic)

If you have ever dealt with an addict you know that there will be more than hungry, scared mobs....there will be those out there who are in withdrawl, desperate and emotionally unstable.

You just described the day and a life of northern NH. I'd be suspicious if I went into town this time of year and the men were NOT in camo. So if you visit, leave the suits behind...or put a bright orange vest over it, they might think you an easy shot.

Live Free or Die.

The thing about the Golden horde is largely correct, in my opinion.

The situation varies with geo-demographics; but in the US, 83% of the population live in metropolitan areas. If three quarters of them "bug out" (which is a conservative estimate), the population in rural areas will more than triple. The numbers become irresistible at that point.

And if the catastrophe is economic and international in scope, you can expect immigration to the US from Latin America on an unprecedented scale---not a million a year, but 30 or 40 million more people at once, for whom danger and scarcity are measured on a different scale.

FEMA's calculations after Katrina are that the average American city now has enough food for 14 days. That two weeks figure is arrived at by looking at all the food in homes, in stores and warehouses; and estimated up because people begin to conserve food when they know there is a crisis. Add into that the number of people fleeing/dying from lack of medical care, and it works out in several different scenarios to the same general number of 14 days.

That is why the FEMA website says you need food and supplies for your family for "at least" three days; and that you should build up a 14 day supply of food when you can afford to, to take your family out of that equation.

You would never have to worry about me, even when the SHTF, I will always remain a gentleman. Honor is far stronger than any physical desire. It also requires that I treat well any who don't attack first.

You and your girls would be safe with me and mine.
