You make a good point.
In my opinion, Christians don't like Westboro because Westboro picks and chooses certain things from the bible and USES them to persecute gay people and serve their OWN agenda. Of course Christians do this, too, they just pick and choose DIFFERENT things from the bible to justify their intolerance, persecution and judgment of other people, and to serve their own agenda...
The action is the same, they're just using different tools from the same book... and what's funny is that they're both thinking they are on the 'right' side of God. :shk:edit on 10/8/2011 by Benevolent Heretic because: (no reason given)

Religion should be about spreading Love, Hope, Forgiveness, and Thankfulness. Westboro Baptist are helping to spread anger, outrage, and hate.
Only God can judge.
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
Remove the plank from your own eye.
Westboro has decided to play 'Judge' and is only criticizing and condemning. I don't hate them, but if they are spreading negative feelings by picketing funerals, they must expect that negativity to come rushing back at them as karma (you reap what you sow).

Westboro is more than likely a mock organization. Just a guess.
It is disingenuous to say the least, even though they make a strong case for the hypocrisy of the modern Xtian fundamentalist in very strong and very real fashion.
They are pretty much no different than the rest of the Xtian right.
Who will forever be blind to their raging hypocrisy until the day they die.

I'm not trying to justify the Christian argument. I'm not a proponent of religion of any sort. I don't see a lot of difference between Westboro and other Christian factions.

the conundrum for a christian lay in the fact that their religion is wholly contained within 1 source... a book written thousands of years ago and translated countless times.
this inherent issue of placing one's total faith into one (human derived) source leads to most of the troubles facing the Abrahamic religions today.
many of the "rules" are undeniable archaic, written in another era, by a relatively small band of people with a particular value system, in a relatively difficult ecosystem. many of these "rules" are simply no longer applicable to a broad and ever evolving society. (many of these "rules" still are... which is why these religions persist. i doubt the Golden Rule will ever go out of style. )
yet, if a follower can pick and choose which "rules" they prefer, then they are questioning the very authority of the one source they have wholly embraced.
it is not a dilemma i envy, and am thankful that the 'gospel', as i have come to understand it, is manifest in the majesty of Nature, the vastness of the Cosmos, the beauty of Art and the grace of Love... such blissfully brazen manifestations of Eternity simply cannot be confined into one source. how could it be?
but that's just how i'm seeing things.
PS... like Yoda says: hate leads to the Dark Side of the force... i would add, irregardless of the source.
'tis a shame we have wasted so much potential hating each other, and finding outdated esoteric reasons to do so.

Are you being serious? Let me put it this way....what ever crazy rule you cherry pick from the Bible and want to believe is your business, but as for Westboro...THEY PROTEST THE FUNERALS OF DEAD SOLDIERS....No not just 'gay' soldiers....but regulars soldiers. If you can't see that this is NOT the time and place to share your message of hate, then you're just plain sick...as are Westboro.
BTW...as for cherry picking verses, here's some you are
conveniently forgetting
If a man has sex with a woman on her period, they are both to be "cut off from their people" (Leviticus 20:18)
People who have flat noses, or is blind or lame, cannot go to an altar of God (Leviticus 21:17-18)
Don't cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)
Don't let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)
Don't have a variety of crops on the same field. (Leviticus 19:19)
Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19)
