Can't wait for my wife to see this...back in january I said to her I just had a feeling everyone would see something in the sky in october and by the end of the year (2011) and during January 2012 everyone would know that things were going to change forever....I wasn't sure wether to believe myself;..I'm still not but if it keeps happening I'll be a very shocked man!

its obvious that this object is no meteor .. if it were helicopters would definitely not be able to follow it.. also meteors do not hover nor do they move up down left right...

I am in Lake Havasu....haven't heard anything about it...and didn't see it till the news this morning....but, my husband went out, before dawn, to hunt doves....when he returns, I'll ask him what he saw...and if he saw it, I will report back....from the news it looked more like one of those orbs, than a meteorite....

Hey guys, didn't some guy a few months back in some "ask me any question cuz i know everything post" predict this by saying a green light would be visible over the us in the middle of September? I mean my brain could just be making that story up due to ATS overload at times.

The meteor fireball with tail is what's mostly being reported now. But ABC took this picture before the one with the tail showed up. You'll notice this one has no tail as one would expect with a meteor or falling space junk:

A meteor would start forming a tail as soon as it enters our atmosphere and begins to burn up. As the ABC reporter said, this appeared 30 minutes before the one with the tail appeared.

Anyone brave enough to suggest chinese lantern?

Why would anyone suggest "chinese lantern" for what is clearly a bolide meteor? Oh, that's right. When one doesn't have an intelligent argument, they resort to mockery.
Typical.

Muzzleflash - I too have seen a detonating bolide and it was absolutely stunning and unforgettable. It was a few years back. I had gone outside for some reason or another and saw this greenish fireball streaking across the sky. I called my wife and one of my daughters and by the time they got outside it was still going across the sky. As it approached the horizon it exploded. I've seen a lot of meteor showers and so forth, but this was so much cooler and I am guessing it lasted about 30 seconds.

Of course i missed it last night even though i live in Arizona, but looking at this video from KCAL9.com in LA you can watch the video and at 1 minute into the clip a video from Glendora (a city in LA) shows the "meteor"

the only thing is that even thought the video is choppy - you can watch as the "meteor" moves side to side based on the reference point of a parked "car" (or some black shadowy things) on the ground below the "meteor" which was in the sky.... when the clip begins, the "meteor" is at the far right side of the "car" (drawing a straight line down) but in a few seconds, (even with the jumpy video) the "meteor" is in the middle of the "Car" (by drawing a straight line down from the meteor) yet in another few seconds, the meteor is at the far right of the object on the ground using the plum line (or is it plumb line?!?!?!)

anyway - it doesn't make sense that the meteor would move left and right while falling to earth - at least from what i know, it would be travelling quite fast and it shouldnt be altering it's course...

here is the link to the news website that i am talking about

Correct.

That is definitely not a meteor in that photograph.

There should be a tracer / tail.

Good post.

I thought meteors fell NOT at a straight angle just due to the nature of how it heats / cools and its shape (not my area of expertise so no citation on my part!)

That video has been linked several times in this thread. I guess some of us can't be bothered to read the whole thread before we post. That video is not a video of the meteor, but of something else that happened like an hour before the meteor. My opinion is the same as GiftOfProphesy said - probably a very common RC plane or helicoptor with LED lights.

Wait a minute I just realized something.

Maybe we are being severely dumbed down?

Why the Hell would thousands of people call 911 for seeing a meteor or even a UFO of any type?

That makes absolutely no sense.

If you are going to call anyone, maybe call the Air Traffic Control operators at a local airport?
How about a local military base hotline?

I don't know? That's who I would call since that would be relevant. I just don't see how 911 would bring any solutions.

Plus what if someone actually got hurt in a car accident, shooting, whatever?
Well 911 is tied up with calls from silly people talking about a light in the sky....

I think people always have called 911 for metors. Or atleast I thought so anyway. Doesn't really make sense to me either because it's not like they can do anything.

Very interesting, this picture interest me a lot.

I'm not to smart about these things but it seems to not stay straight and changes it's trajectory. Is that usual? Honestly it looks like someone opened up a cloud picture in a drawing app and made that. Of course that's not the case though lol

I was a witness to the Peekskill meteor event years ago. It was a bright green object with hints of red as it fell apart while decending. This thing ultimately landed in in Peekskill, NY and actually hit a car!. It turned out to be an ordinary chondrite (stony meteor).

The reports of this event last night makes no sense in the context of a meteor. They are rarely observed lasting more than 3-5 seconds, and reports of hovering and changing direction are an impossible scenario for a meteor.

The rare meteor sightings, like the Grand Teton meteor:

www.maniacworld.com...

are a class unto themselves. These are asteroids that skip off the surface of our atmosphere and go back out in space.
They are the only spectacles that can be viewed for a considerable amount of time.

I do not think that the object viewed last night was a meteor at all. Something else and very strange.

I have read the whole thread and I just don't buy the RC plane/helicopter with LED lights. So someone was flying his toy and just coincidentally a meteor appears shortly after in the same airspace. What are the odds of this happening as you say?

I remember the Peekskill story! I lived maybe 20 minutes from there.

I agree - nothing is making any sense...if it was a meteor (which sure doesn't sound like it) where did they land? Where is some kind of damage? Too many peeps saw this! Too many- from so many locations...something is not right with this story..

And today, no reports, no damage, no pictures of any kind to show what, or where all these lights ended up.

Hmmm...

Nope, people wouldn't think to call those numbers especially people away from house, phone book or internet. I know I dont have any of those numbers saved in my contacts. First instinct is 911, but I do agree it should be 411 and get the number of the above mentioned or local news station.

I live in Spain and a little over a week ago while out for dinner I saw a green ball streak across the sky - pretty far up mind you. Me and another lady saw it - no camera though. I'm just curious however, I was reading an article about how sometimes space debris enters our atmosphere and burns up upon entry - but also noted in the article was how this happens very rarely?

Just find that odd considering there have been a few reported sightings. Not calling this a conspiracy by any means...just wondering if anyone over in my end has seen any?

I would guess that on any given night there's several people playing with lighted RC toys and also it is not uncommon for bolide meteors to streak across the sky - so the odds aren't too bad actually.

The actual point I was trying to make is that the video you posted has already been posted a few times in this relatively small thread and, regardless of whether you think it is an RC toy or invading space monsters, it is not a video of the bolide meteor that happened a little later. These are two different events. Are they related? I doubt it, but I suppose it is possible.
