Exactly. Challenge it, but don't make one lined sarcastic comments, with the only outcome being that the OP feels like a moron. Even if he IS a moron, at least that moron is speaking up. Which is more than can be said for the majority of our population.

I think you make a few outstanding points here and in other replies down the thread. I've noticed some of the same thing recently with Elenin in particular but other subjects as well. Some folks are hitting the threads strictly for the joy of attacking those who are participating in it. It isn't to debate, add to or even debunk but seemingly just attacking for the sake of attacking.

It's a shame to see and I wonder how many people are run off after being bashed like that in initial offerings to the community. They might have become valuable members with just a little more time to learn how everything works or how to approach "touchy" subjects.

If you present the facts/information to the best of your ability and a person ignores it, why do you have to keep going with it? I am trying to understand your need for them to believe what you do. I mean this in a sincere manner...because I really do not understand the drive behind it.

FOX sensationalist BS, why do we need that here? obviously if the thread is made by somebody doing some legitimate research and making a legitimate inquiry then no matter the topic it should be respected, but you cant honestly say most of the elenin/nibiru threads here are making "Legitimate" claims. deny ignorance anybody?

Elenin is just an example. I used it because I've seen alot of one liners, and obvious trolls attack Elenin posters lately, and it's incredibly disheartening to see our community treat certain threads with such distaste.

We as an ATS community, in my opinion, are here to discuss and push the boundaries of reality and societal norms. We talk about the things that people don't even consider until its brought before their eyes. Thats why I'm a part of this community. Its enlightening.

I'm not saying believe the moon is made of cheese because JoeBlow23 posted about it. I'm saying, allow him to process and get out his ideas and his theories, without posting a rude one liner, that will more than likely make him never contribute again.

I believe we're here to foster creativity and individualism, in the hopes of making our own informed decisions - without being afraid to contribute because we'll sound "stupid" or "crazy".

I understand that...but sometimes it seems more like a fight to make others believe what another person believes, rather than a civilized discussion. You can't force another person to believe something they refuse to believe. Even having empirical data doesn't make it ok to force the thought onto another.

The thought of putting myself out there to ask a question makes my stomach go into knots because of the responses I see on here to other people.

I don't want to be treated as if I am stupid or less than all of these intelligent types just because my brain doesn't work in the same way and I don't understand at the level they do. I really am not that type of intelligent, but I do wish to discuss. But, in a good conversation type of way.

Just like someone continuously quoting the bible to back up their claims.
To each his/her own.
You can not force someone to believe something unless it's by physical torture and brainwashing.
Or simplicity of their knowledge and understanding.
A realistic approach or a fantastical approach.
I have a working knowledge and I have friends who have a theoretical knowledge.
So when it come down to when the SHTF,who do you think is going to survive?
Comes down to just plain ol' common sense.

I don't feel you personally are trying to force the belief. I agree to each their own, and to believe what you want. That is my understanding of things as well. I meant more that, just because someone doesn't accept what another person says to be a fact or common sense doesn't mean that being verbally abusive about it is okay.

I am trying to understand the concept of the people who insult or name call others when discussing opposing beliefs and why they cannot let others believe things even if it is nonsense. I do not feel you fall under that way of behaving, so maybe it is not a question you can help me understand.

I want to know what is really going on, but there are very few places left to go online to have a good discussion. But I see angry, aggressive, mocking, insulting responses to other members and I do not feel safe to say what I really think or feel. I only feel safe saying what I am here because this thread was put into the RANT section which means nobody will read it.

When the posts start becoming mocking & condescending - you will have people who enjoy or thrive on that type of thing posting, and not so many people who really want a good discussion. Those who are open and want to really discuss will avoid posting in those areas because it's not worth the abuse. Just better to keep quiet and to ourselves.

I understand where you are coming from.
First,you need to start your own thread on your beliefs.
Second,you need to develop a tough skin,ignore those who oppose your thinking and continue on like a freight train.
If your belief is so strong,don't let others de-rail you,so to speak.
Stay strong.

A good place to start is the general chit chat forum.I have put some way out there stuff on there before,and got my a$$ handed to me.

I think I am not understanding a discussion board. I come here to discuss, not to be right. All people can disagree with me and it's no problem. I love the discussion and diverse perspectives. But I'm not okay with people being disrespectful to others. So I just do not engage in it, because there is no need to say something in a room full of people with their ears plugged.

I *think* that's what the OP was trying to say, is that there are a LOT of us lurking who potentially have much to offer to the discussion or who want to hear what others may have to say...but the general disrespect makes it not worth the effort. There are many people reading who are turned off from the discussion because of the harshness being shown.

If there is a desire to have people with more common sense, or who are more respectful then it has to be shown here. The more harsh, condescending posts that show then the more of those type of people will want to respond because the rest of us would rather just be quiet than bother at all. Is that making sense?

(Btw, your post made me laugh - I do appreciate your honesty, and you do have a good sense of humor )
