Fantastic clips!
Great costumes, performances and songs.

One could say it moves to the seedier side of things, although like most drag shows it never really crosses the line of decency.

Very believable female characters, and an almost subversive parody of the financial side of some heterosexual relations that is at once mesmerizing, comic and tragic.

It's performances like that which can make the audience question: who is really in "drag"?
Here the audience plays along, but to somebody unaccustomed to drag that could be very threatening.

It makes us aware that all gender is a performance, which is only normalized through repetition.
Very butch males copying John Wayne, for example, are just as much in "drag" as a man in a frock.
They are performing gender through culture.
Drag merely unsettles that by making us aware of the gendered performances we all do every day.

I feel like Darth_Prime as far as how could I be on this site for so long and not know of this thread
. What a awesome job Halfoldman that you have done in bringing sooo many classic clips for us to watch.

Luckily for me, I grew up in the Fort Lauderdale area where many awesome queens resided and did their shows at the infamous Copa, and it wasn't so uncommon to see them actually out and about in the daytime! Outrageous right?? I know! I owned one of the womans bar down there and many used to just go there to hide out and let their hair down shall we say.

I did male drag myself back in the late 70's early 80's but it was pretty small scale then. The women are so fickle. Only the fems seemed to appreciate it and we all know there are way more butches so they just got pissed off! Though my daughter has done it as well and it seems much better received now. Dont know if it is because I did it in the south and she has done it in the northeast or what? Seems LA has pretty good success with it , so just may be the times or location. Probably fine in the European countries also as they are a lot more open to that sort of thing if not old hat by now to them.

Needless to say I am a big fan of the RuPaul shows. I really think they do show all the different elements and sides to what the drag queens have morphed into. Two examples have been shown here, ie., Chad Micheals and Sharron Needles. Old school, New school. I myself tend to lean a bit more towards old school, but I like the new as well. Either way it takes balls to do it, lol pun intended I guess.

I find it kind of funny that this thread has been so hands off from the other members. Even the trolls have stayed away except for the one and I have to admit, they were kind of funny themselves.

Regardless, you have another follower and if I come across anything as classic or I think is worthy of this thread, I will surely post it.

In the mean time, does Prince PoppyCock count???

lol guess it will be the three of us having the party now! I liked that last video with all of Chads different looks. That is one reason I like RuPauls drag race because you get to see some of the best queens out there. I was really torn when it came down between Chad and Sharron as to who should have won that, but it all worked out in the end.

I like Raven and Raja as well. I was tickled to see Raven doing the makeup for Americas Top model show. Im also pretty sure Raven pals around with Prince PoppyCock.

What style do you do? Who do you like to portray or whom are you known for? Im in providence RI., but I dont think we will be seeing any of these queens on any future shows. I find them kind of sloppy with their techniques. The lip syncing also leaves a lot to be desired, and to me that is just as or more important as the gown.

I know there are more family on this site, wonder why they are staying so quiet???

Yes gurl, i thought i was the lone queen here!

The type of drag is Glamor, not necessarily 'Pageant type' but i don't do 'Camp' drag, i'll serve you some fish gurl, but i can have a more dramatic style, but i can get more fun and 'Camp', so i am versatile, i have pulled inspirations from one of my favourite Queens Raven, and some from Sharron Needles likewise, among other inspirations so it's 'New School' drag, with my personal flare style and passion,

Gurl tell me about the lip synch, i can turn it out, nothing gets on my nerve like a sloppy lip sync

Yes gurl, i love me some Rupauls drag race, out here in Hollywood a lot of the queens that were on her show perform around the various clubs

I know one thing, you can always tell when a queen truly identifies with the character that she is doing. There doesnt seem to be much of that anymore. Seems a queen just picks a song she likes and off she goes without much thought put into it. The best queens will give the full package, lol well ummm thats not exactly what I meant, but I think you know what I mean. They have a few characters that they do and they have studied them for a long time. For example Chad does a excellent Cher. She has her down snap. lol with as much money as she has put into that face though, she should have her down by now! Be sad if she didnt.

One thing I have noticed here in the north east, is it seems drag queens are starting to lose their nitch. The people just dont get as excited about their shows anymore. Seems the mens taste are changing in men??? Not sure if that made sense. Just when I talk to the guys they are like meh about the queens. lol maybe the queens have just bitched themselves into a corner, I dont know, or maybe just not enough talent or glamor. They just arent the draw for the bars that they used to be. Kind of sad really.

West coast and east coast really seem to differ on those kind of things. You are lucky though, you get to see all those fabulous ladies and, be one yourself.

Speak on it gurl!

i must concur, some queens just think they have to lip synch to a 'popular' song, and haven't studied the character, or the song really, i take my drag serious, i don't just pick a random song, i pick songs that i feel represent my feelings, and an overall emotion i want the audience to feel

drag is not just dress as a women and jump around, it's an art

many Gay men don't appreciate Queens, many find them disturbing and don't 'agree' with them, and Queens already have this misconceived reality for people outside of the gay community, many have an image of a sloppy camp queen telling bad jokes etc

Hi girls, thanks so much for the fantastic clips.

I haven't had a chance to relax sufficiently to enjoy my favorite music threads in a few days, but it is much appreciated.

In SA we have a gay slang called "Gayle", and suffice to say I'm having a "Dora" (drink) and a "Cilla" (cigarette) while enjoying the show.
Fortunately we don't have to watch out for "Priscilla" or "Betty bangles" (the police) anymore while in drag.
en.wikipedia.org...

The sheer glamor and overall artistry of the clips is amazing.

It's difficult to find something to match that, although we also have professional drag acts.

But right now my heart is also taken to the small towns of South Africa, where drag is still very much at the forefront of the defiant lgbt community spirit - even if it is at times "unprofessional".
It's always an outpouring of the spirit for freedom and individual creativity, and takes much courage, whether the result is glamorous or clownish.

Here is an African drag queen that some people find bad or even "terrible", but others might note that compared to how African ladies act (famously proud of their bodies and curves) it is a very good performance in the context of local, especially rural culture:

A short documentary on drag queens in the rural town of Upington, on the edge of the Kalahari desert:

Oh well, the one queen walked off the stage, apparently because she couldn't hear her own song above the crowd, but I'm sure that dramatic exit gave the whole town something to gossip about for weeks.
And that's partly what folk drag is about, whether in peace or war - it adds a sparkle to the ordinary drudgery.

Welcome back halfoldman, I was hoping we didnt lose you. lol Doras for the three of us please bartender...

I must say a bushqueen (pardon me) is something that has never really occurred to me, though I was very happy to see her. I would think that might go a bit of a way to support the genetic stance and not just copying what one might see on tv or influence of other cultural type things. Also proves we are everywhere. The Bush people are so in touch with nature that I wonder how her own people or tribe take to her.

Sad to see people laugh at what they dont understand when it is really so simple. I have to say for me though, being over 50, except for those few awkward teenage years when things werent as open as they are now, I have basically gone about my business without really a care of what others thought once I found my people, ie., my first woman's bar. I also like to think I have helped a lot of straight people understand by answering their questions when they were serious enough. I was never one to close doors of communication.

I remember the lesbians that were older then I tell their tales of the paddy wagons pulling up to the bars and arresting anyone that had one more then 3 pieces of mens clothing. Got to be a joke with them eventually or you know another way of carrying on the party for the night! Typical
So, at least I didnt have it quite that hard. We have come a long way, can I get a amen sista?!
