I'm in GA, east coast and I was getting SERVERS UNAVAILABLE too.

I was getting the "servers unavailable" message too, right around 11:03 PST, when this happened.

6 million people without power all afternoon.. can you imagine how many people would be trying to log in if they all got it back at once?

Maybe, but I'm sure it will be closed fast because all the info is related to that site.

I don't want to cause trouble, but this might be serious!

I would like for someone to reassure me that that voltage monitoring system that was replaced, was not replaced and put online as an unpatched machine running a very old MS operating system.

I would like for someone that knows to come out and tell me that.
And I'd like to know why problems with the monitoring systems can still bring the grid down 8 years after we first learned they could.

503 errors, posting before it goes back down. In Cali but still have power, sounds like others around me don't. I'm lucky I guess. Its freaking hot, so I am thankful.

That story is a bit much, Im not buying it on just that alone, I checked some san diego news sites and people are commenting that there power is coming back online. No mention of anything else I saw.

Since little is developing on this story now I am inclined to agree with you.

good morning all ... according to World News Now, it seems the 'perpetrator' of this outage was a utility employee who made a bad booboo which cascaded in such a way to cause this multi-state, multi-country failure.

Good news is some power has been restored and the system is expected to be fully recovered later today. sure glad to hear it isn't the result of something more nefarious.
hope everyone has a better day today

Could you imagine a EMP hitting the area,
the people freaking out and the car accidents
alone from all the traffic lights out?

This should teach you to prepare now before it
is too late.

Very strange that the naval base also shut down. The base would have its own backup generators. It can also take power from the ships

True that.

There is a possibility of a false flag attack soon but even if it doesn't happen, its always best to prepare.

Sound like the 500KW lines in the California desert between AZ and the CAL border are down. those lines feed San Diego, LA , central parts of california, Az, Yuma. Mexico, mostly california though. The 500KW lines bring in power from NM, Utah, TX, AZ -Palo Verde Nuclear plant. California does not produce much power at all, much of the power is sold from the other states mentioned above. NM-PNM,Farmington,and AZ Palo Verde Nuclear power plant provide the bulk of the power to Southern California. NM-PNM also sells power to Texas and Utah.

I always though if those 500KW feeds into california go down there will be trouble in the entire southwest region. The power to AZ and CA will be out for a while. There is transfer stations and backup lines on that run. It takes a while to switch the power over about 12 - 18 hours, but it will not be at full capacity though, enough to get you guys by for now. I don't know what the cause is but I'm sure is related to this 500KW run on the outer grid of California. I'm guessing an couple or few overloaded transfer stations, or someone through a grid transfer switch and power got re-routed. it happens. It will take a while to reboot in any case.

You guys who live in California really need to re-think about the population their and the demand of the power needs for the state of california. The grid is way over loaded in California, it takes 2-3 states just to power the southern end of it. There is no place to run any new major power grids into california, due to state regulations and such.

If anything go's wrong at Palo Verde or PNM your still out of luck. You will still be without 20-40 percent of your power. California does not generate much power, California buys power form other states and is very reliant on it.

Again for those whom live in California get on your state representatives backside and get them to change some laws. you cant live with roving blackouts and power outages forever. It's only going to get worse for you guys if you don't act. Not to mention The state of california was warned 2 years ago about this exact situation. It's not like these other states providing power don't have a growing population as well.

So good luck, the power will be on soon.
