New ATS Member Claiming To Have Important Warning/Information. You Be The Judge...

Up to now, I've not clicked on threads that were in the HOAX bin, because I assumed they had been proven to be hoaxes!
At least now I have a more accurate idea of what this bin is.

why would NASA keep its mouth shut about something when it's suffering from cutbacks? Bad news from the stars would get them more funding.

Whoever put this in the hoax forum needs to be removed from moderating.

We have all kinds of stupid threads in the normal forums that arent moved.

This one for a start thats been proved a hoax.

Yet something that has not been proved either way is moved without explanation and the poster banned. The same thing happened to darkknight who was banned without explanation and was not proved wrong

this is an email exchange from my boss regarding some research from an organization that is connected to jpl in pasadena, ca.

He says that the research comes from an organization that is connected to jpl and not JPL itself. A quick search on Google shows that CALTECH is connected to JPL and am sure there are others that can be found. The Wikipedia article for JPL also has some info that may be helpful. Another interesting find is that Middlebrook, Arkansas is only about 90 miles NNW of Memphis, and is just a stone's throw to the New Madrid Fault. Just a thought that may help decipher this puzzle...

This is a shame but at least we know ATS might not be the best place to go for uncensored information and discussion. Not to say the mods dont have a reason for all of this but it shows how a story can easily be discredited and eventually wiped of the site.

So, to me, it seems obvious by now that the member was a troll or an ex-member playing games...

Too bad though as it was great to see some members here go out of their way to find what was behind his puzzling post...Some great research here on this thread, even if the outcome is a dead end...




EDIT TO ADD : I also agree with the idea that the Admins or Moderators should put a disclaimer explaining the staff decision in such cases.

Hoax, darn! Well, I did notice that member jalosangeles2011 was banned about the same time as middlebrook, and yes, jalosangeles was posting on the arkansas thread, perhaps they are the same person? The posts began on page 271 of the arkansas thread. Anyhow, it seems for once that a hoax has actually been beneficial for ATS. The new EQ info that ya'll found will boost the quality of the EQ threads even above the great level they were at

Okay. I have been thinking more about it. The statement about the 'bigger end' got me. Because, as I have already said several times, one of the very few ways to predict anything with quake related events (possibly) is through ground deformation. GPS was the best -known way for this, others have been introduced on this thread.

I keep coming back to the Long Valley Caldera, becuase of my other thread. After not thinking about this 'hoax' for a day, I read that original email again. It regards a company that submits stuff to JPL in Pasadena....so while JPL is a government agency, they could have private companies sub-contracted to them. Way I see it, the only people JPL is going to be reporting too are Government ones...especially when it comes to issuing alerts, so the obvious one there is the USGS.

This lead me to some searching for real-time GPS studies of the Long Valley Caldera. Guess what?

I need help interpreting this stuff. It is not my thing. BUT...by browsing through a few of the real-time stations, it appears to me that there has been a marked uplift in the north end very recently, as indicated by the blue dots on the top graph HERE


So there we are. Is the warning real? Are they talking about an excelleration of deformation in the Long Vallery Caldera? We know it is monitored and is something that most definately could cause a real warning to be issued. We also can't ignore the swarm going on there right now, and the neighboring swarm on the san andreas directly West of it.

What do you all think? someone want to help interpret this stuff, just in case??
