I saw your edited post so I had to comment, good one on posting that contradiction.. but I refuse to hold someones hand when they make claims like the member of the post above me. Just like an alcoholic, if they want to see the light or "moment of clearity" they will.. but I can't choose for them.

This guy might be the first to go, he's giving daily updates on the comet and says it's 16 times the size of Jupiter , he wants everybody to start making preparations, his latest claim last night was that as mercury went behind the sun, out of our view it was in a collision and is now completely destroyed, he has all soho and jpl viewers to prove it. Its definitely worth watching one of his vids!

You're exactly right. Just look at all those times in the past century alone where people claimed we were going to be killed by some celestial object, the government denied it, and then all life was wiped out. I know I've been killed by asteroids, comets, etc. dozens of times.

This is a lie. I don't know if NASA made the statement or whether the author of the article did but this is NOT true. Comets are electromagnetic in nature and are NOT icy rocks. NASA has known this for years. Even several weeks ago I stumbled on a NASA article discussing something about Elenin. The text in the article showed that they knew Elenin was not an icy rock. Unfortunately I do not know the URL of the NASA article nor do I remember the text I used in the search which caused me to find it.

The reason Elenin is getting so much attention is because of conspiracy theorists. Every day astronomers the world over are getting emails asking if its going to kill us all. Leonid Elenin has gotten so many he has posted multiple articles reassuring people that it is just a normal comet. Welcome to the world of the conspiracy theorist. This has been analysed and basically the conspiracist modifies the "theory" to encompass the latest information that contradicts the conspiracy. It will certainly be interesting to see the defense of the above change. A conspiracist NEVER admits to being wrong irrespective of any evidence. It will be hilarious to hear the conspiracies after Elenin passes us by without incident.

I am curious about whether you have any scientific knowledge of thermodynamics. I believe you are saying you believe the dirty snowball theory. If you are so knowledgeable, please explain how ice can exist in space as far in as Mercury's orbit. Keep in mind that the temperature at which ice melts and water boils decreases as pressure decreases. Space is virtually a vacuum. Also sunlight, by itself, even when the temperature and pressure are favorable to keeping water frozen will cause ice to become a gas. This commonly happens on sunny winter days when snow is on the ground. How would a icy ball of dirt retain its integrity or any water at all as it passes the sun at that distance. That is enough information by itself to dispute the dirty snowball theory of comets.

NASA's statement is a specific statement which cannot be true since it does not match scientific facts. It would be more productive if you could provide proof that the dirty snowball theory is true which is not possible. You probably also believe Iraq had and obviously still has weapons of mass destruction. Your government always tells the truth and is honest.

Astronomers know that comets aren't just dirty snowballs. However, this is still what the public considers them to be and since this article was directed towards the layperson there is no point to go off-topic and explain that comets are rocky with ice and frozen gases contained within it.

So you posted a quote from an article (without a link none the less) in which you have no idea who stated it between NASA or the author, and this is your "proof" of knowing that NASA is lieing about Elenin? Wow I think i'm confused by your post. If my mind translated that correctly then that is truly the most feeble arguement I've seen in a while. Please provide a link to the NASA statement you're talking about.. you know the drill.. no link, it didn't happen. Also, a comet is composed of loose collections of dust, ice, and rocky particles with a nucleus.. no where near electromagnetic did you just make that up?

A typical orbit at this distance from the sun would maybe mean it loses 60,000,000 grams of water a second.

On a comet 5km nucleus that would equate to a loss of 0.2m on surrface area. Not as much as you think.

All said it was no threat.

The problem is that the uneducated are gullible and stupid, the cultists on this site want something bad to happen.
Some believe aliens are following this comet, sounds familiar?

Basically it will fall on death ears, and I wont be surprised that once it passes and the world begins to point and laugh at some of these folk, these cultist will find another date and scientist name.
