I believe the lesson learned here is that London needs more police officers. I heard that they had to round up people from all over just to get 16k? New York city ALONE has 34,500 (2010).

No wonder they can't squash the arsonists/looters/rioters.

Does Britain have something akin to what the USA has for domestic issues - a National Guard of sorts?

I know it was a joke but what they really need is that high pitched alarm that can only be heard by young people.

Use sonic warfare against them and it would be silent for most people, it would be an instant way to disperse a crowd.

Theres a reason police did what they did, I remember they cause a riot at the Millwall QPR match, they kept the QPR fans who left early right by the Millwall exit, of course a riot ensued.

This was right after they cut police OT, a bit of a coincidence I think. They are sending a message again.

Im guessing both looters and regular people are buying this stuff.

Amazon UK's riot gear sales soar: Aluminum bats up 6,000%

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Aluminum bats, police nightsticks and other weapons dominated the "movers and shakers" list of hot-selling items in Amazon.uk's Sports shop on Tuesday as riots spread across Britain for the third day.
]

One of the top items, an aluminum baseball bat, gained a whopping 6,541% on its "sales rank" over the past 24 hours. Amazon's "movers and shakers" list tracks items that are showing the biggest spike in sales that day.

ETA - Im going to guess London will be more quiet tonight, since alot of police were called into the city earlier. but other cities may experience more unrest than earlier nights.

Gun ownership in the UK is nowhere near like it is in the United States from what I understand.

I just can't help but think though, these riots just seem a bit orchastrated to me...

There does seem to be a level of orchestration.

In my own tin foil hat moment I have considered Gahdaffi making good on his threats to burn UK cities using agents to stir mischeif. I found it strange that the looters in Birmingham had radio comms...

Update on the shooting

Armed police are now scouring Aston to find the shooters.

I'm kinda in the middle about the orchestrating.. The first outburst seems "legit" so to speak, spontaneous. The other outbursts afterwards look more organised.

I wouldn't underestimate the amount of illegal guns btw if it really comes down to it and they are openly used, i think in alot of countires it's easier to get a gun illegal then licensed.

It's not just kids though. Not around here anyway. Sure there are some kids but most are well over 18.

My street has been spared any damage or looting from what I can see but there have been numerous rumours in my area of houses being broken into by gangs.

It does kinda cross a line doesnt it...?

I hope it doesnt get that far and they can teargas them to compliance.

Watercannons tend to work (speaking from experience
)

I'm really starting to like the fact I live in a town in the country side. The only rioters you get here are old people charging into oxfam to wrestle over the cardigans.

Could be a wonderful cover to invoke martial law PRIOR to an economic collapse.

Do martial law AFTER an economic collapse and people will be mad.

Do it during RIOTS and people will thank you for putting down the riots and bringing them safety.

I bet here in the United States, our martial law will come after the "beat whitey nights" spread... to prevent a race war.

Three explosions reported at Tottenham rubbish lorry depot........just got that off of:

thewestlondoner.wordpress.com...

This is being updated minute by minute...they have people on the ground

0110: Council rubbish lorries on fire in Tottenham – sparks reportedly 200 feet high there now. 0107: Peter Beaumont of The Observer (there’s a newspaper you don’t hear about often) is on the spot in Tottenham; there is a fire at the council recycling depot there. Explosion not long ago, may have been a fuel tank of some description.

Damn that could make matters FAR worse..

If the crowd is firing live ammo there's no reason for the police not to.

Let's hope it's just rumours.

Its not rumours im afraid, its just been reported on the news.

Shots were fired from a group of 40 youths at the police.

If the police are forced to fire back then so be it.

It was widely reported right after Katrina that rescue choppers and boats were being fired on.

Investigations afterwards failed to find one incident that could be verified, no holes in any choppers or boats either.
