Seven dead and eleven wounded so far in a peaceful little town is what I would call massive damage. 15+ story buildings completely ruined and on fire. People caught inside them by fallen debris. The Norwegian army has surrounded Oslo? all public transport goes only one way, out of the city. All journalists are rounded up in a (possibly windowless)) briefing room where briefings are held frequently. Foreign looking youth brutally taken way in police and army cars in an unknown direction. Lots of violence and extreme measures for such a peaceful country. like the police were ready for it. Looks like a war zone from what I could see and fathom of simple firsthand television images.

Just now! Reports are coming in from the Labour party's summer-camp for youths in the Oslo-fjord (Utøya) that a man dressed up as a LEO entered the camp and started shooting people.
www.nrk.no...

Youths are scrambling to get of the island. Many having started to swim away...

This two episodes are obviously related as the "policeman" entered the camp under the premises of interviewing people in connection with the attack in Oslo.

It now looks like it's the Labour-party that's being attacked.

The bill fits even more now...

I'm basing my conclusion on eyewitnesses as i'm not very far from where the bomb went off (a few blocks)

Now they are reporting that there has been shooting on an island just outside Oslo. 700 youths from the youth organization of the ruling party is having their summercamp there right now.
The shooter identified himself as a policeman and said it was a routine follow-up regarding the explosion in Oslo.

Crazy... Then is it really Muslims behind this like people think? Are the two events isolated? A coup? Fill us in for those that aren't familiar with the situation.

It's a massive bomb- just not massive damage.

A properly constructed device could have pancaked a lot of those buildings.

This guy walked through the bomb site and is what I am basing my opinion on...

Is there an English version of that article to confirm?

It could be a signal for forces in Norway to act now. Something agreed on beforehand, I suspect we'll see more carnage though I pray we won't have to. I will abstain from posting further messages until I have calmed down.

So then would you agree or disagree with this "experts" assessment?

17.06 Dr John Gearson, a reader in terrorism studies at King's College, London has said that the bomb was likely an improvised explosive device using "commercially available products such as fertilizer".

Quote Generally these devices are put on flatbed pickups, small vans or even trucks. It looks to me that the source of the explosion was outside the buildings and not within them so they haven’t been structurally brought down.

It probably takes a bit more than the lone wolf capability to carry out this sort of attack.

Not yet, I think. It's just starting to come in reports. The newspapers say they'll be back with more...

Proves my point.

If the device was properly constructed of proper materials you'd be at the very least temporarily deafened if not screaming from ruptured eardrums.

I'm just thanking the gods that you're OK brother. Been there & done that a few times and it's not easy. Hang in there and stay inside.

Not the full article but now other outlets are verifying.

17.19 Police in Norway are also now dealing with a gunman shooting at people in a political youth camp on Utoya Island. Utoya Island is roughly 20 miles north-west of Oslo.

Police reports suggest that a man disguised as a police officer began opening fire. Jens Stoltenberg, the prime minister, was apaprently attending a Labour party conference at Utoya

The police says also there has been shooting in Utøya, near the main train station, perhaps in relation to the explosion.

People should leave Oslo city, go home and stay indoors, not gather in groups on the street, grounded on info on perhaps more happenings.

This is terrible. Norway is a NATO member but always tries to be diplomatic and juste. This is totally undeserved.

I'd agree 100%.

Couple tons of sensitized ammonium nitrate will make a big bang but doesn't put out the pressure wave velocity that a high explosive would- even with a good booster like 10-15 cylinders of acetylene.

That is why we're not seeing pancaked buildings or a 30 foot wide crater somewhere. The explosives used just don't have the speed to do that kind of damage.

Even a much smaller amount of high explosive like RDX would have knocked a lot of those buildings flat and pushed in or removed the fronts.

It sucks that it happened to begin with but if it had to be glad the bombers either didn't know what they were doing, didn't have access to real explosives or wanted it to look like an amateurish attack.

OK, there is two Utøya, the one you are mentining and also a small place in Oslo. I think Utøya, west of Oslo, is the right place, since it also belongs to Buskerud police district, mentioned in the police conference.

If Jens Stoltenberg is there, then this is VERY serious!!

For those that might not know. Who is Jens Stoltenberg? Why would they attack that person?
