I am originally from the Midlands, the town of the DeMontforts. My name is derived from the French Moulin. I would be intereste to follow my line back and see where it leads.

I should not actually mention that down here where I live. The DeMontfort family are hated by the locals for what he and the French army did during the Albigensian Crusade.

HERE is a link to a book I found on amazon to help your quest with your ancestry.

My own family line is Celtic, Welsh/English, but largely Welsh due to the fact that the area I was born was originally Powys before it became Mercia and the Midlands.

What an interesting Island we have.

Absolutely correct. These Nosemen were so much trouble, that the French crown granted them lands in Normandy in order to stop them pillaging the French countryside. Do you realise that if and when William becomes King he will also become the Duke of Normandy? Full circle or what?

Living in 1066 country I can't help but find the whole Saxon/Norman clash interesting..
But I have to admit that I wonder if anything has actually changed in the last 2000ish years??

Most definately you should. Mine are Cornish. In those days, marrying a Saxon was out of the question and marrying a Catholic was and is still a big no no. I guess thats why we still breed very tall men.

The South Downs?

Beautifull part of the country with strange people

It does seem to be a case of same crap but different clothes with history repeating itself with another type of Moors occupation

I cant help but think though that even though life was tough for our ancesters, they had more freedoms than we do.. We cannot do anything without the states permission even travel without some sort of license or passport, even marry!

You've definately got some interesting family history there. I'm direct decendant of the "King of Prussia".

You got that right. When I married my first wife, nearly 30 years ago, I had to fill out a General Application form to get permission. Mind you, that was the military.

If I recall, that was normal if you were in the Military or Police. My own father and his brothers also had to get permission. I think it still continues in the Police, not sure.

I had to have my OC's permission to marry my ex wife too when I was a soldier, however civvys still have to be licensed (marriage license) thus having the states permission to be married.. Money making scam! The same as landownership, you do not really own it but is leased from the crown, you even need permission to build on land you supposed to "own"..

yep I'm a SouthDowner.. born and bred.. I would be sad if the Seven Sisters where not in my life and I have to admit that I will agree... we be strange people... especially the inclination to keep declaring independence from the rest of the country (3 towns with a couple of miles of where I live still do.. a good p up is always in order)

We cannot do anything without the states permission even travel without some sort of license or passport

While I agree with you on that it is also not really true.. that is only us agreeing to abide by their system.. I can for example jump on a boat and sail away without a passport and done that many times.. but mostly I do go by their rules..

If you look at past history, it took only 3 days for them to invade all of England and the Saxons were no match for their distantly related Norman cousins. Of course it took alot longer to take full control; we all know that.

Just noticed your reply... sorry about that
Sussex was not defended... it is hard to defend the Southdowns.. you only have to look at the Napoleonic wars and as recently as WW2 to see that it is hard to defend.

The best approach is to allow an invader to land (giving them a bloody nose in the process) and then battling them on the Weald which traps an invader between the North and Southdowns.

Tho from what I have read I do lean towards the notion Harold was provoked into advancing down to Battle when his own personal estates and his own household where attacked by Williams forces.. shield wall to one side that was Harolds folly and Williams advantage.. Harold should never have advanced his force to meet William..

Is'nt it a big shame this is all no longer taught in our schools? Our kids need to know where they come from but I guess nowadays it's not "politically correct" , pretty sad state of affairs really.

As a 40 year old man, I would soo like to play that game!

I would love to have a crack with a longbow, I think I will look for some archery clubs myself, although i wouldnt hang around if i forget my glasses!

Go for it-never to late to try,and you will pick it up in no time at all-as archery is literally written in our genes.
I've been interested in archery sine my mid 20's,I am 36 now and enjoying it more than ever, possibly because I have started trying to make my own Longbows(and some shorter ones too).

So far I have made 3 longbows, and 4 shorter bows.
I am currently working on a piece of Yew,6'2"in length, with a natural recurve shape to it.
Its the most challenging I have made so far,but if I get it right,I think its going to be a special one.
I only use hand tools-axe/billhook,drawknife,rasp and sandpaper.
So far none of my homemade bows have broken, and they all shoot straight, even the short 4.5ft one is happy at 28" draw,at 45lb.
I am told that is either very lucky or I have a gift...hehe,well I think I must be very lucky to have a source of good wood.
My only remaining bought Bow is a kassai "bear" Hungarian recurve-that is a fast powerful beast,to be treated with respect.

Find a local class if you can to get the basics sussed-its a great way to pass the time, and reconnect with our past at the same time IMO.

It is a big shame.. there is such a wonderful wealth of history to learn from and yet the kids are taught and learn next to nothing.. I lean towards the notion that it is to dumb them down in an attempt to create a docile population.. which makes me feel sad and angry.

I know I am not as objective as I would like to be when it comes to history.. but still some understanding of what has happened before might help them (the youth of today) learn not to make the same mistakes.

if you can not see into the past how can you see into the future or know who you are?

I agree-history should be taught using practical demonstrations in schools-including of course the making and learning to shoot Longbows.
Did you ever have one of those science teachers who went the extra mile to show you interesting experiments like the compressed air rocket or tesla coil?
I did,and he was one of the greatest teachers ever IMO,who inspired the students to take in more knowledge through practical demos.
History should be taught like that I think-out in the school field, building Celtic burial tombs, trebuchets and of course Bows and arrows!
The best way to learn after all,is to DO.

I dont see what the problem here is. French armor was crap. All armor at that time period was crap. It was the battle of Verneuil when the first proper plate armor was in the field. Milanese lombard cav had it and they rammed right through the longbowmen.
