ah you guys are totally right. I added an extra k at the end. I like my link better though. Far more mysterious! Oh well. I agree that I hope this turns out to be something worth at least a tiny bit of the time I have put into it. And curse it for planting the thought of a Lost Sequel in my head. I actually googled that for awhile last night and would have bee really excited if I had thought that was it. I think I am setting myself up for disappointment on many levels.

I understand your skepticism. And I can say it may be warranted. Forevever, while I do think we've achieved something great here as a whole, I can also understand why you're wary.

It's all just strange. Nothing seems to connect, at least not now. (Hopefully Zippidee will be back with more later)

I've worried about the virus/hacking aspect of it since someone posted that their yahoo account may have been compromised much earlier in the thread, but I have continued looking. I think it's the thrill of the chase. Hopefully we haven't put ourselves out there for anything more than just a sociology experiment by some college kids. If they want to read the conclusions I've drawn so they can report back to a prof., then that's okay with me...I just don't want my personal info compromised.

Ok everyone, just for the record.

I am assuming the public facing FTP server at 8-3-11.info is fair game.

I am running THC-Hydra to try and crack it. I'm assuming this is ok with the folks there as it is part of the mystery and the security expert in myself has a need to find vulnerabilities. If not, I will stop immediately.

I am running it slow at 31 or so attempts per minute with a limited username list, but my password list is something like 17 million possibilities.

If anyone has any other usernames I can try let me know.

I am not trying to do anything illegal, just playing the game like I would if presented with a FTP server I needed to find more about.

I am also compelled to see this through as well. Im curious to see what is going on. I started posting because I decided that it was better to bounce ideas back and forth and take a risk then to remain quiet and gain little.

At a couple of places in the thread those names have popped in and out. But, I am not really familiar with them. Perhaps I ought to be ashamed to admit that? But, I think if this is "fame" related it will be big enough that it wont have to be explained to most of us once we find the truth. So I don't think that those people are famous enough to be it. But maybe I live under a rock.

nurture
retraction
close
Ophiuchus, etc., etc.

Basically, add all the words for the images an alt text from the sightings page.

I figured those would be in my password list, not as usernames, but will add them anyway. I'll let this one run for awhile...of course, even with my list it could take years to crack it. I'm just trying to get lucky.

I hate brute force, but it's something to try.

If I could enumerate a valid id on the FTP site, this would be easy, but I cannot.

Nice find. I was just basing it on, several pages back someone was mentioning that some of the picture names relate to plants - Wormwood, mugwort.. I can't find the post. I'm lost in a sea of web pages.
