See thats your problem right there...you have a HP that is the crappiest computer you can ever buy well compaq is pretty useless too

I always buy computer parts seperate and put them together most likely from tigerdirect.com or newegg.com you can build a nice computer for 500-600 if you know what you are doing...i will never buy a full computer I made that mistake once before and never will ever do it again...Asus all the way!

I have used computers from around win 98 though I was young at that time. Anyway I consider Windows 7 the best, no problems on my computer. Infact I never even encountered problems with vista so I have been happy with all the OS. Windows 8 though :Om wow they can be serious. Its like how windows movie maker and messenger has been downgraded lol. I wish I had the know how to create my own OS, I have made tons of designs but little knowledge of coding. :/

One big problem is windows becomes fragmented in other areas then windows defragmentation works on.

Paging and Registry file fragmentation can not be fixed by window internal defragmentation program.

Put PageDefrag v2.32 on your computer and a lot of problems with windows will go away.
technet.microsoft.com...

Paging and Registry files fragment over time and in about 6 to 8 months you start having problems.

Neither registry fragmentation or page file fragmentation are big problems. If you're worried about page file fragmentation then just make it a fixed size which eliminates the need for a page file defragmentation program completely. If you really want best performance then delete as much unncessary stuff you can, disable pagefile then run a proper defrag problem (like newest O&O defrag) then enable pagefile again with a fixed size.

My desktop PC was built, configured and overclocked by myself.. specs:

Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4ghz overclocked to 3.4ghz
4gb DDR2-910 5-5-5-15
GTX 570 OC 1280mb @ 786/2100
HD103SJ 1tb (windows hdd)
WD10EARS 1tb (storage)
Corsair HX-620
next upgrades: 8 core CPU when released and will be overclocked, 8gb RAM, 120gb SSD

The HP laptop (HP DM1z with AMD E-350) was purchased because the price was right. The HP also got rather good reviews (editors choice on anandtech) and is superior to the ASUS equivalent, superior to the MSI equivalent, but inferior to the Lenovo equivalent. Also apart from the software installed by default on the HP, it's fine.

Linux (Fedora (forget version), Ubuntu 10.11, Ubuntu 11.04, Mint 9.6 KDE) was only ever installed on the desktop PC.

Asus all the way!

Lenovo all the way for laptops.

ASUS all the way for motherboards.

OCZ all the way for solid state drives.

Corsair all the way for power supplies

gskill all the way for RAM

MSI all the way for videocards.

Samsung all the way for hard disk drives.

Fractal Design all the way for cases

I have a friend who uses Logic on the Mac and bitches all the time to me about it crashing. My Win7 machine used exclusively for audio runs like a dream. It's how you build them, no OS is immune from crappy hardware configs.

Also, people seem to forget that Microsoft are responsible for putting affordable, user-friendly computers into pretty much every home. By dominating the OS market they homogenised the PC platform, making it far easier for developers to make software that would run on a wide variety of hardware configs. Operating systems is one market where a polyopoly is not desirable. A strong monopoly that is capable of meeting the majority of end-user's needs is a good thing for both customers and developers.

I'm MAX OSX all the way. Though I also have a laptop with Windows, every windows OS apart from XP is horrible. I work in IT and most of my clients run Windows 7, working on these machines remotely is a nightmare due to all the extra admin crap Microsoft decided to add in.

Windows Vista was the worse OS in the history of Microsoft. The OS just by itself would hog so much RAM memory it was ridiculous...Vista was all about looks 7 is about looks/performance

I'm not going to lie I would take looks over performance any day, just my nature lol. Still I have a good spec computer so I guess it's not as noticable. I have found Win 7 to work great though and I could probably use this for years to come, providing it isn't ended like XP.

I don't see how people can say Microsoft is greedy for trying to force people to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP. Windows XP will be 13 years old when support ends. That's a really long time for an OS to be supported.

Eventually software companies will stop supporting XP too and only write the software for Vista, Win 7, and Win 8. You'll have to update or buy a new computer at some point. Technology moves fast, I'm surprised XP has hung on for this long. Microsoft should have ended support when Vista came out instead of keep dragging out support for it.

No clue, but are those updates anymore helpful these days? I mean, how much more can you update XP except replace it with Win 7?
