Microsoft begs users to leave Windows XP – gives them until 2014 to do it

www.digitaltrends.com...
July 12, 2011

After a decade, Microsoft is finally ending support for Windows XP, but not for another three years.

In yet another valiant effort to get people off Windows XP and onto Windows 7, Microsoft is finally ending its “extended support” for the decade-old PC operating system. Unlike Apple, however, when Microsoft puts its foot down, it gives users 1,000 days to get out of the way. The company won’t officially stop supporting XP until April 8, 2014–a year and a half after Windows 8 is expected to roll out. The company will not issue any security patches after this date.

While there are plenty of home users still running XP, Microsoft’s big concern is the large number of businesses that haven’t yet upgraded to Windows 7. Despite its lenient timeline, the Redmond giant is so desperate to get people off XP that it now routinely insults the OS, posting up an entire video called “Is Windows XP Good Enough? Really?” which we’ve embedded below.

To scare those concerned with the bottom line, Microsoft quotes a Gartner report as well, which indicates that “more than 50 [percent] of organizations that do not start deploying Windows 7 by early 2012 will not complete their deployments before Windows XP support ends, and will incur increased support costs.”
How did we get here?

windows-xp-desktopSo why are people still running XP, a platform that was released in 2001? There are a number of reasons, beginning with how bad a reputation Windows Vista gained when it launched in late 2006. Another may be the lack of overall change in the design of Windows over the years. To many, XP may look like it is current enough to do the trick and businesses know that compatibility with older programs is not an issue. Until the smartphone and tablet revolution began a few years ago, the evolution of PCs seemed to be moving at a snails pace.

In any case, Microsoft is beginning to get desperate. Earlier this year it refused to support XP with the release of Internet Explorer 9. You can bet further measures are being taken. Apple, meanwhile, does not support its 2005 OS X “Tiger,” will soon end Security Updates for its 2007 “Leopard” OS, and will likely end full support for its 2009 “Snow Leopard” when OS X “Lion” hits shelves shortly.

Is this the beginning of a less lenient Microsoft? We’re not so sure. The company has already somewhat encouraged businesses to run Windows 7 after the release of Windows 8, saying that the two operating systems will be fully compatible.

Although Microsoft is not going to shut down your computer unless you switch over to a new Windows OS, the implications of new technology, electronics, and software that we purchase will no longer be compatible with Windows XP. I am already using Windows 7, but I find XP more user friendly. Just thought I'd let ATS members know about this update with Microsoft

I LOVE my Windows XP. I'm old-school and I think Windows 7 is garbage. My personal opinion, of course, but I have never had a single issue with the XP OS.

Hated ever other system except XP. That one really worked. Vista? Don't get me started. I've got W7 on this machine and I like it. It's very much like XP.

If you thought Vista was bad, you should have tried Windows Millenium! That OS was garbage...I am only using Windows 7 because of my electronics that are only compatible with that OS...otherwise I'd be an XP user

I've had plenty with xp 64 bit still considering switching to Linux. Still considering because i don't know much about it other than the fact(s) that it is virtually free, no anti virus is required, and extremely hard to crack.

Don't care.

I stopped using this micro$oft rubbish completely, like 2 years ago.

and my computers have never run better.

I'll never have to use M$ crap ever again.

It really is astounding how much better computers run without this virus.. err.. 'software'.

Do yourselves , and your computers a gigantic favor.

If people would actually build modern machines to use Win 7 it wouldn't be a big deal.

You can't run Win 7 on a 2 ghz Pentium 4, 512 MB of ram and a 10 year old intel integrated chip. Win 7 is better in every conceivable way. I'd rather run an ancient linux distro than XP.

well, by 2014 i'll be ready to replace this old PC with XP and all the patches for a new model for internet jostling

its now mid- 2011, just what the internet landscape will be like by 2014 is uncertain...
i hear that 2gigs of data per month will be the minimum price (additional to the ISP address & email)
& the 3 gigs month will almost double in cost
& that 4 gigs or more will be like a mortgage payment on my income

I have more than 50 machines running XP basically because until a few months ago our ERP software would not support 7.. I am actually looking forward to 7 I use 7 on my personal machines and find that it does actually work better than XP. Im old school. But sometimes stuff does get better. It will mean replacing about 40 computers but I can do that for about 12,000.oo not really that bad.

BTW this is really old news -- about 2 years old news.

It makes perfect sense to finally scrap win xp. With the capabilities of new software increasing every day, a company should not be expected to have to ensure that it is backwards compatible with decade + old technology. I applaud them for giving support for this long. Windows 7 is waaaaaaaay better than vista and I would say at least on par with xp.

This is like complaining they don't make any new games for the sega genesis.....

I still own a Sega Genesis and the original "No-Friend-O" (Nintendo)...and occasionally I bitched about no new games coming out for them for years!

Then again, it's old school dinosaur technology, so the show must go on
Got an Xbox 360 instead

Does anyone else think windows has been going downhill since Windows 2000? XP wasnt to bad, but I remember not liking it as much as 2000, and vista is just another step down. Screw windows 7, not spending another 200+ dollars on more windows garbage. Only reason I went to vista was that XP did not support DX10, which is of course a ploy to get people to switch.

98se was argueably more solid of an os than xp.

they are just different filesystems.

the nt filesystem as a whole is a failure if you ask me, doesnt matter what os it is.

anybody stuck on the fence, seriously give ubuntu a try...you will be impressed and wonder why it took you so long to make the move.

linux is freedom

Good luck with that microsoft....
XP has been hacked cracked and circulated throughout the globe...

unless they embed some kind of kill code into the OS updates between now and 2014....?

Apart from vista, they have only improved the capabilities. The reason people miss an old os is because they are familiar with it. Relearning how to do things is annoying. And xp not supporting dx10 was not a ploy, it was incapable of running it because it was outdated.

"I can't run starcraft 2 on my 133mhz pc from 1995(first pc I remember using lol), it's a ploy to make me buy a new computer....."
