Lets face it people, as Humans we love violence, we thrive on it.

There is no argument we are the most violent destructive creatures known in the universe.
When push comes to shove even granny will poison your ass.

I totally agree with you, after long stressful day at work nothing winds me down like killen a bunch of zombies.

I play games while waiting for the payment check, if the check is late, I imagine my clients as the bad people on the game. When I get paid, I smile and sleep much better. What a Vanity! Arggghhh When will the kingdom come?? I hate it here!. This world is FAAAKKKEEEE√

2- I can see colors better than most males. Thanks to playing FPS.
3- I am 15 and I weigh 56 Kg. pretty good for someone my age huh?
4- I speak English thanks to playing video game at a very young age of six. My first language is Arabic.
5- Red Dead:Redemption taught me that being the good guy is the best way through life even it sucks sometimes.
6- I do not have stress problems. Thanks to games.
7- I am an stright A student. Did not effect me even though I play 3-4 hours a day.

If you have ever played a video game you would understand this too....but studies have shown people don't play video games to kill people and stuff like that in their mind. they play it because it gives you something to accomplish and makes you have a competitive edge

I love his argument, he says no reason why its bad, or what happens in the game when it is typed. Its like a five year old arguing, Lions are terrible because they have teeth, and because the kill. Without explaining any context. You can't say all video games are terrible because no kid goes insane from Winnie the Pooh's honey catching adventure. It is the parent's fault, if you don't explain what reality is then its your fault.

Please let us not argue about "its the parents". These days parents are children, kids themselves. So lets face the fact that games will get into the hands of kids, teens, and your drunk uncle bill.

Video games or virtual reality are inherently bad and extremely detrimental to society. I will share some of my feelings and gatherings, and hopefully you can do the same. There are so many games out there, with so much content, not through years of gaming have I even scratched the surface. I'll show you what I've gathered as well as share some of my own experiences and takes on things.

Just a quick personal experience I had while at a local fun arcade. There was a pretty cool flight simulation game, with a man of eastern descent, wearing a remember 9/11 shirt. This man played this game for HOURS. Sorry if that was a tasteless way to begin, but its something I'll never forget. Could I blame the guy? Video games are ultimately simulators. Haven't you ever thought, what would this be like? I have.

Anyone can create, anyone can play
Anyone can create a game, and anyone can play a game. A group of psychopaths could create a game, and maybe they have, and guess what: it gets put out for all the world to play.

Take quick glimpse of Silent Hill.

You just had a glimpse. Now imagine not just a glimpse, but a fantasy land full of bodies, disembowels, crucifixions, and pools of blood on top of the creepiest music you've ever heard of. Could you imagine some sorts of psychological affects on a child/teen? I'm not going to find every gory and violent picture, you get it.

Unmatched, Detached, Doomed
Many game's offer characters we love, characters we hate, ten fold over movies and the like. In a video game, one is the killer, one is the elf, that character becomes a part of you, and you a part of it. When was the last time you found your palms and feet sweating because of a picture, or a movie? I could turn some games right now and literally be immersed, physically and mentally. My senses are heightened, and I tell you adrenalines-a-flowin. Palms and feet sweaty and all. I am detached, and immersed in that world. Nothing in this world matters. That's a problem folks. For someone to tell me this hasn't been shaping our psyche would be silly. There could be hundreds or thousands of murderers who was given a fantasy, and that fantasy wasn't good enough anymore. So they act out, violently, sadistically.

BILL: But haven’t little boys been playing soldiers and going “boom” ever since the first toys were carved from wood?
DR. DAVE: You, and unfortunately parents, are clueless about what creates the video game addiction. What separates Doom from other video games and toys is one big point. They are deliberately programmed to make the player a “first person shooter”

Dr. Dave there is talking about the columbine shootings, both the kids played Doom and Grand Theft Auto.

But it was the nature of that violence that turned heads. Set in the "near future," the shooter puts the player in firefights in Afghanistan and, at least once, lets them join forces with terrorists. One scene puts the player in the position of deciding whether to join in as an ally guns down innocent civilians in an airport.

Oh wonderful, it's the most advanced shooter in existence, and I can plant bombs and join the terrorirsts. These days, even the military train with games.

Depending on your preferences, you can have sex with someone who is older or younger than you — perhaps much older or younger. In fact, if your virtual character is an adult, you can have sex with a virtual character who is a child. If you did that in the real world, most of us would agree that you did something seriously wrong. But is it seriously wrong to have virtual sex with a virtual child?

Yay, thanks second life!

Need I even mention BioShock, where you hunt little girls which by the way are protected by "bigdaddys"
How about www.littlelacysurprisepageant.com, its website in GTA IV, you know; the internet in GTA.

Reality Sucks
I contest! When do these gross fantasies on games cross over into real life? More often than we're aware of I'd assume. Weather its imagining this game is your life, or this game truly being your life, or part of your very fiber, The Virtual world is outdoes that of our cognitive reality. Provides us with gross simulations, and as future technologies come about I'd assume video games will have nothing to do with "video" at all, and just be complete mind simulation like in Minority Report.. Ah.. and you thought that the avatar blues was bad... Instead of furthering our own race, we must level our virtual characters instead, get fat and drink mountain dew. And

I'm going to end with this quote its speaking of Super Columbine Massacre RPG and a victims response to playing it.

Richard Castaldo, 24, one of the students injured that day, had a different take. He is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot. He's a gamer — he wants to be a sound engineer for games — and he's played the Columbine game. There are some parts that were tough for him, he said, but he thought the game has a unique take on that day: "It's weird for me to say this, I guess, but there's something about it that I appreciated, seeing the game from the killers' perspective."

There you have it, hes a gamer! He freaking appreciated seeing it from the killers perspective! Need I say more?
Can anyone really argue that video games/virtual-reality is in anyway GOOD for us, or not terrible for our society? I just want to be like Mario.. fool with pipes and chase mushrooms all day.

Well, your analysis... sucks. Ice is inherently cold, why would a game like pong be inherently detrimental to sciety?

Next you show off Silent Hill, to illustrate the gore and carnage present in contemporary video games, you realize that this game is rated M for mature, meaning it cannot be purchased by someone under 17, meaning that parents ultimately make the decision for it to be bought by those younger than 17 years of age, and what is present in this game has been around in fiction for millenia quite literally, have you ever skimmed over the Old Testament? The "Good Book" has millions of individuals killed by a capricious malevolent deity- dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.com...

Yes I've found my heart racing over a video game, Mass Effect(for example) was an engaging story with great characters that you form a connection to, I felt the same way when I read Nineteen-Eighty Four and when I watched "The Dark Knight", that's what art does, produce a reaction, have you ever heard "enlightened" music, like Mozart or Beethoven, does it not lull you to sleep one moment and set your heart racing the next? I saw a documentary about the history and creation of Superman, following the issue where Superman died there were people literally crying, seeing a fictional character they had grown to love die, this isn't anything new... how do you think people reacted when they saw Romeo and Juliet performed for the first time?

Where is there any mainstream video game which includes sexual encounters with children, what the hell are you on about?

Your argument against Bioshock shows your lack of knowledge regarding this topic, yes you hunt down little girls protected by "Big Daddies". You're presented an option then; to harvest the girl for an immediate award or save/liberate her for more substantial rewards down the road. This option/ reward structure parallels... you guessed it, real life. Guess what video games are? Virtual simulations of real life, who'd of thunk it?

This is honestly one of the most incoherent, brain-dead assessment of video games I've ever heard. I'm not close minded either, when I read about the connection between violent behaviour and violent/graphic media in Skeptic Magazine it made me rethink things, but this just makes my head hurt.

So my first thread didn't start perfectly, maybe I rushed it. I admit I would have spent more time on it.

HOWEVER, get a grip folks; I am not talking about "pong" or "tetris" or even Mario. I'm talking about the extremely addictive, fantasy lands, adults and children and even pedophiles alike are sucked into. War games - numbing one from war. Second Life, World of Warcraft - blatant detachment from reality, as well as a chance for pedophiles to practice disgusting pedophilia acts online, that's okay with you all?

Wake up, anyone with common sense should be able to see video games are detrimental to us. You're telling me it doesn't make kids fat? You're mistaken. Kid gets addicted, sit on there butts, and they pig out while spending 16 straight ours on *enter game here*. This accumulates to thousands upon thousands of hours of sitting doing nothing productive and getting fat - mean while the fat dad is in the other room doing the same thing

It mind boggles me that instead having an open mind, and working with the thread on how possibly videos could be detrimental; you folks write me off as a troll. PROBABLY because each of you are sucked into your video games, hence the extreme defense towards the issue.

I have played videos games my whole life. It is one of my only hobbies.

6'1' 200 lbs.

Tell me I am fat.

I am not desensitized to anything. I cried and lost sleep for weeks working my first fatality as a peace officer.

I get sucked into MMORPG's as much As I do books (and playing make believe when I was a kid).

Your pedophilia claims are mostly fear mongering, as it is not common, and is actually bannable in most games.

Funny, the ones ranting are the ones claiming to have an open mind.

Oh, and I have learned and honed quite a few real life skills in games. I have also learned mathematics, physics, biology, etc from games.

I have done a mock FAA private license flight (actually in a real plane flying above the real earth) and passed with flying colors…with my only experience being Microsoft Flight Simulator and Combat Flight Simulator.

You can take your propaganda and shove it.

It's okay - stay delusional. Video games are our friends, they will save mankind because YOU turned out okay. Youth of today are stupid and fat, and are especially susceptible to these games and yes numbed up and drugged up to the false high and false sense of achievement this stuff provides.HIGH because zomggg I finally got my UBER GLASS SWORD! NUMB because I like to be on the terrorists side in Call of Duty bwahaha war is awesome!!. ADDICTED because I love to be a slave for gold in my fantasy land. FAT because I can't get off my bum because ..ahh, this is the life.. slim jims, mountain dew, and I get to be cool in second life!

Video games play a direct role in keeping society far behind its full potential. Face it.

Ahh. No leg to stand on, so the reort to caps and name calling. Looks like you fail, friend.

The only one who is delusional is you. All of my friends, like most of my generation, grew up on video games. None of us (my friends and I) are nothing but normal adults.

So you are calling my daughters fat, dumb, and drugged up. If you were in front of me, I would punch your teeth in.

Be gone. The same lame arguments were made of arcade games and DnD in the 70's.

The only thing holding society back is people like you, who think it is their place to tell others how to live.

If you don't like something, don't do it. Leave the rest of us the hell alone.

You have zero evidence that video games are the cause of obesity in children. It's surprising you haven't already been made aware of the ridiculousness of your so called 'argument'.

Your basic argument is video games created the teenage killers that attacked Columbine? Well sure they played Call of Duty and Gears of War so have many other people. This is a recent sampling of video games sales among the "violent ones":

1. Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 13 million copies worldwide
2. Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2 10 million copies in the US alone
3. Call of Duty, Black Ops 13.7 million games sold in the US
4. Gears of War 5.88 million copies worldwide
5. Gears of War 2 7 million worldwide

Let's do some basic math, let's face it it is about all I am capable of.

Let's say most of these sales are repeats and put an average of 9 million gamers playing these games, that number is low but let's go with it.

roughly 42 people have opened fire in schools since 1997.
www.foxnews.com...

Take the 42 shooter and divide it by the average number of "gamers" 9,000,000

42 / 9,000,000 = 0.000004666666667 number of people who play video games that turn into killers.
These numbers are in no way 100% accurate, the number is probably FAR lower, as I did not research the video game habits of the 42 school killers.

Odds of a video gamer turning into a killer way less than 214,285 to 1

Let's compare it to these odds:

Odds of fatally slipping in bath or shower: 2,232 to 1

Odds of being killed sometime in the next year in any sort of transportation accident: 77 to 1

Odds of being killed in any sort of non-transportation accident: 69 to 1

Odds of being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1

Odds of being murdered: 18,000 to 1

Odds of getting hemorrhoids: 25 to 1

Chance of dying from any kind of injury during the next year: 1 in 1,820

Chance of dying from an assault: 1 in 16,421

Chance of dying from a car accident: 1 in 18,585

Chance of dying from any kind of fall: 1 in 20,666

Chance of dying from accidental drowning: 1 in 79,065

Chance of dying from exposure to smoke, fire, and flames: 1 in 81,524

Chance of dying in an explosion: 1 in 107,787

Chance that Earth will experience a catastrophic collision with an asteroid in the next 100 years: 1 in 5,000

Chance of dying in such a collision: 1 in 20,000

I am pretty comfortable with those odds, and if my kids were the victims of such a horrific act you bet you ass I would be blaming the kid who did it and his parents not the child's choice of recreational activity.

Please provide evidence that the video games you're mentioning are anymore addictive than Mario, or even pong. Certianly these games are less addictive than alcohol and cigarettes, should the government ban those for being "detrimental"?

Videogames don't make kids fat, poor parenting does, I game for hours at a time when I have the time, I also run three times a week and wight train four times a week. I have 9.5% body fat, and weight 135 pounds at 5'9", if anything I'm somewhat underweight. It isn't the developer's repsonsibility to make sure children don't sit around and eat junkfood all day, it's the parent's. By the way, the same sedentary-linked obesity could be brought on by reading all day and poor nutrition, or evem studying all day combined with poor nutrition. Besides, who says gaming isn't productive? South Korean Lim-Yo Hwan spent much of his youth refining his play of "Starcraft:Broodwar", he's make over 490,000$ USD gaming, completed his compulsory military service, came back to the Starcraft community and now owns a professional gaming team, he has a fan club with over 600,000 members. I guess you're a 31 year old millionaire with a fanclub numbering the hundreds of thousands too? The issue isn;t with videogames, it's with a lack of moderation, which should be instilled by parents.

Also, my defence of videogames isn't based on being obsessed or addicted, I respond the same way to other uninformed and potentially harmful beliefs, my defence of the atheist position, and the evolutionary perspective are just as impassioned.
